Arsenal: Raya, Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly, Partey, Rice, Odegaard, Trossard, Martinelli, Havertz
Subs: Neto, Kiwior, Calafiori, Zinchenko, Tierney, Jorginho, Merino, Sterling, Nwaneri
Arsenal ensured the gap between them and Liverpool remained at six points after thrashing Manchester City 5-1 at Emirates Stadium on Sunday, thanks to goals from Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Kai Havertz and Ethan Nwaneri.
Mikel Arteta made seven changes to the side that beat Girona on Wednesday, with David Raya recovering from a muscle injury to start alongside Declan Rice and Havertz.
Ethan Nwaneri dropped to the bench after his midweek heroics but Hale End teammate Lewis-Skelly came back into the team – replacing Riccardo Calafiori.
The game couldn’t have started any better for Arsenal who found themselves ahead within two minutes, with captain Martin Odegaard breaking the deadlock to ignite an already lively Emirates Stadium.
City were too casual playing out from the back and Leandro Trossard did well to dispossess Manuel Akanji, before Declan Rice worked it to Havertz, who crossed for Odegaard to slot into an empty net. 1-0.
The visitors were visibly rattled early on and after another poor passage of play, Gabriel Martinelli had the ball in the net – lifting delicately over Stefan Ortega – but was correctly ruled offside in the build up.
City couldn’t cope with the Arsenal press during those early stages but eventually found some composure, and had their first attempt at goal through Omar Marmoush although his effort sailed high and wide.
With the game finally settling after that frantic start, City were inches away from equalising after Josko Gvardiol rose highest from a corner but David Raya got a strong left hand to the header, before the ball bounced off the crossbar and away.
It was a lucky escape for the Gunners but another example of Raya’s reflexes which were razor sharp again.
However, seconds later, Arsenal should have doubled their lead after another City mistake at the back – this time Rice caught Mateo Kovacic on the ball – with the ball falling to Havertz in front of goal.
The German controlled, took his time and somehow shot wide completely unchallenged. He still had Ortega (and John Stones on the line) to beat, but it was a terrible miss from Havertz who instantly pulled his shirt over his head in embarrassment.
Just before half time, Raya was called into action again to tip an obscene Gvardiol cross away from danger, before he got down well to save from Savinho whose effected deflected off William Saliba.
Arteta’s men were becoming increasingly stretched and needed the half time whistle, with City looking more dangerous and some passes going astray – although they always looked threatening in transition.
After the break, the game settled into a familiar pattern and Arsenal were dropping deeper with each passing minute and the City equaliser eventually arrived through Erling Haaland.
Savinho was allowed to travel into the box and hang a cross up to the back post, where Haaland got ahead of Saliba and powered a header past Raya. 1-1.
Momentum was definitely swinging in City’s favour at that point but less than two minutes later (105 seconds according to Opta), Arsenal re-took the lead through Thomas Partey.
The 31-year-old did well to intercept a telegraphed pass from Phil Foden, before advancing towards the area and rifling a shot towards goal that deflected off John Stones and into the corner. 2-1.
With the stadium bouncing and momentum back in their favour, Arsenal were playing with their tails up and made it three thanks to a brilliant strike from Lewis-Skelly.
Having been found by Rice on the edge of the area, he dipped inside Stones and curled a right-footed effort towards the far post that Ortega could only get a hand to – but not keep out. 3-1.
With City pushing for goals, space was beginning to open up on the break and Martinelli forced Ortega into another good save after Rice did well to break forward from midfield.
Arsenal did end up getting their goal in transition and it came from Havertz, who ran beyond Martinelli before cutting inside Akanji and curling a brilliantly placed strike into the corner. 4-1.
It was a clinical finish from the German which made the first half miss even more unthinkable.
That marked an incredible second half turnaround from Arteta’s men who looked nervous during spells of this game, but realised that City were there for the taking if they attacked them – and attack them they did.
Lewis-Skelly breezing past Haaland in midfield kicked off the party vibes, before Bernardo Silva kicked out (for the second time) after Ethan Nwaneri made him look stupid with a lovely piece of skill.
Arsenal fans were ole-ing every pass by that point and there was even time for a fifth goal – to sweeten the humiliation – when Nwaneri curled in another trademark strike with Ortega rooted to his spot. 5-1.
This felt like a cathartic release for the Gunners who have endured a miserable, stop-start season up until this point but had a point to prove against City and when they smelled blood – went straight for the jugular.
Stay humble.
This is what happiness feels like.
We needful performance once they equalised. Really pleased Havertz scored. We have two serious gems in Lewis skelly and Nwaneri. If we get first goal Wednesday we can do em.
PS TP5 was superb.
He’s been our most creative player since Saka’s been out, and with Dec next to him we’re much more secure in transitions. Chapeau to Thomas and the gaffer.
Stay humble eh, stay humble eh. Will.be tomorrow’s big Gaby’s tweet. Do it dude!
Praise Hale End!
What a job by the BFG! There are lots of talented players in various academies, but it’s had to develop even talented teenagers into real players. It is incredibly rare, but Arsenal have done it, and we’re not done yet.
Last minute of the game. Rice to Nwaneri. He cuts inside.
We all knew what we wanted to see. After all, we’ve seen it before.
We all knew what would put the cherry on the other cherry on the icing on the marzipan on the cake.
And we got it.
Yum.
What makes an impressive 4-1 victory even better?
Ethan Nwaneri, that’s what.
The moment he cut inside, I said to my wife, “Five”.
Are you not entertained!!! This is Arsenal. This is Us. This is football.
What a second half that was!! I’d love if we could do that every week…
Everyday even! What a hit by Ethan, that was orgasmic!
Brings back memories of that whinging clown Silva after the match earlier in the season. Didn’t enjoy playing against a negative team, erm bet he didn’t enjoy that swashbuckler either 😂
😂😂😂
Haled down on Citeh!
MLS and Nwaneri, holy shitballs!!! No fear.
Never seen the like of those two. Incredible
Maybe there’s a 16 years old youngster, who can contribute after his old mates. This is child labour and must be punished. 😁
Max Dowman is only 15, so he will have to wait till next year to get his chance.
🧘🏿
5-1, 2 academy graduates scoring, that MLS celebration, Pep distraught.
I am trying really fucking hard to stay humble.
No need to stay humble in wins against cheats
MLS, what a player, what a character!
Clearly captain material.
Even Mika Biereth bagged a hat trick y’day. Hale End is currently on fire and long may it continue! COYG
Their kids score in some useless competition and they spurs are over the moon. But the HALE END PRODUCT score in UCL and the best teams in EPL . I WILL LIVE AND A GOONER
That MLS celebration was disgusting. Boy has no respect for elders! Who the fuck is he? Now Haaland knows! GABRIEL made him a promise and he kept!
Could say that in English please.
MLS = Mr Little Shithouser!
Meditating Little Shit
Meditating Lovely Star.
Ommmmmmmmmmmmmmm…….
We’ve needed one of those for a while. 😉
Unreal. Special shout out to Partey today, I thought he was superb, as was everyone to be fair.
MLS and Nwaneri though. There’s not much better in football than academy players coming in and doing well, and these two are just fabulously exciting. No matter what happens this season, I’ll look back on it fondly because of those two, so cheers fellas!
Academy teenagers crush 115-charge oil money cheaters.
stay humble eh?
Yup… And we could really do with a proper goal-scorer!
at least stay Eh
Guardiola… he’s got a twitch…
…after we made Haaland our bitch…
and new scratches on his face
He’s always got to make it all about him, so it wouldn’t be a shock.
COYG!!! Citizens, On You Go!
Poor old Citeh. When it rains, it pours – and sometimes it Hales…
I have that post sex feeling after looking at that.. quite possibly the perfect game of football. My days
This one was for Arteta. This was personal, you could tell. These lads care. They really do! Thank you Raya for keeping us ahead with 2 massive saves. Thanks City for playing #10 for Arsenal today. Such a creative force 😂. MLS, you’re such a petty son of a gun. You’re our petty son of a gun. A Havertz redemption. I’ve never seen him hit the ball with that much venom since he’s been here. A Nwaneri cherry on top. Hale End is the new La Masia. In a sick way, I love that Haaland scored just so that smug… Read more »
Spectacular win. Great for the Hale enders. Great performances and both scored.
It says a lot about the number 9. Haaland scores, but we score 5 from 5 different players.
Who needs sex? 5 is good enough.
5 goals in their net, is ALL the penetration i need…
The Victor makes the sex more enjoyable as it erases a bad mood.
Try it.
Feels like a perfect evening
Absolutely brilliant, excellent performance. Love it, COYG!
Now that’s a legendary humbling for the history books.
Great birthday present for me and result for all us fans! Well done to our great team!!!!!
Happy Birthday! Lucky cake for us all!
It’s my birthday too!!! Happy birthday, mate. Don’t ever stay humble.
Happy birthday to you…!!!
I have humbleness coming out of my eyes
me too. me too
😂
Hum51ed enough, eh
As they say in Norwegian: “forbli ydmyk”. Now that’s what you call a fuck off win.
Another Norwegian proverb I like:
“Legg det i pipen og røyk det.”
What a game! I would think Cyborg knows who MLS is now. Ladies and gentlemen, we schooled these oil cheats today!
Arteta out!!!!!!!!!
That’s right, someone take him out to dinner to celebrate
Why so many exclamations?⁸
Brilliant show🔥
Fucking love this team
I don’t even care how this season ends, but we have to get squad building RIGHT in the summer. We are just one or two signings away from having a COMPLETE team and dominating this league.
Having said that, got pissed yesterday when a similar foul to the Saliba penalty was not giving yesterday.
Refs have robbed us of at least 6 points this season. Without that we would be way closer to Liverpool and I would have hopes we catch ’em.
And oh, Lewis-Skelly! Hale End has done it again, man. What a player. What a character!
Squad building might start by appointing a director of football, because the interim guy ain’t cutting it.
The chain of events – Michael Oliver was supposed to referee this. The red card fiasco from last game got him removed from this game (along with Darren England as VAR) -> MLS ban is overturned -> MLS scores his first PL goal in a game he wasn’t supposed to be in.
COYG!!!!!
Can you just imagine him in charge, and that lot strutting around knowing they can do whatever they want with impunity. He should never ever be allowed anywhere near our matches.
Bernardo Silva was pretty much still doing whatever he wanted in this game & was allowed to do it. He was a snide little fucker in the last game too, but this one really highlighted the unnecessary little fouls that he makes over & over to try to put opposing players off. He’s becoming one of my most despised players.
Pretty sure he wasnt supposed to have this fixture anyway, and that tweet was just someone trying to stir the pot, like usual over on the nazi site.
Pretty sure that was ‘fake news’. Oliver was never pencilled in to referee this match.
That’s a myth, Oliver was never on the match. That cunt Gary Neville made it up out of whole cloth.
Sooooo happy!!!! Nwaneri and MLS – the world was watching and now everyone knows who you are and that you play for Arsenal! Man City’s millions beaten by Arsenals Academy! Get in!
Oooooohh arsenal you nasty lil bunch, you’ve gone and inspired hope in me again!!! From the performance to the housery this is why I love following this club. Whatever comes of the season these are the nights I love COYG!!!
And whoever votes or comments on this, please please please……stay humble, eh
Yeah, however the season ends, this will remain in memory for a long time, unless offcourse if Arsenal do this again next season.
Who put the ball in the back of the net??????
Half the fecking team!
Imagine starting your first champions league game on a Wednesday and having a trademark strike by Sunday. What a talent he is.
Arteta has changed my life.
Havertz was literally everywhere today. He won so many defensive headers
Besides the horrible miss this was easily his best game
He played well, even I will admit that today!
We still haven’t seen the best of him.
btw, when does saka get back?
Earliest, realistically, would be end of March- but I’d expect mid April.
Shout out to Trossard too, he was a menace on the Left. On a revenge mssion he was.
When Gabriel said they’ll come to our patch in February, nobody understood what he meant.
What a thrashing!!!
Wish I could upvote this again.
Clear cache, upvote, clear cache, upvote, clear cache, upvote …
I feel soooo humble
Thomas partey really has his legs back
And Dec’s right next to his as well!
Goodly morning song incoming I do think
Ultimate shithousery from MLS! Glad Kai score, that’s one assist and goal in this game. Everyone wld have forgotten that assist without this goal.
I think I’ve missed some news. What was he responding to?
During the game at Etihad, Haaland asked him, quoting, “Who tf are you?”
Today was him showing him who he was.
And then MLS did the same meditation goal celebration that Haaland had done after scoring in the last Arsenal fixture. …Effing brilliant!
That’s a proper grudge; MLS has saved scoring his first goal for the club until the return match against Citeh, and then had the presence of mind to calmly mimic Haaland’s celebration… that is ice cold. Loved him already, love him even more now. Looks like a heck of a talent with stunning shithousery well beyond his 18 years.
Embarrassing City twice this season – I still think that draw at the Etihad saw us school them – makes it all somehow worthwhile. COYG
The Humbler becoming Humbled…
Erling ‘Petulant’ Haaland being Humbled, 2 Hale End Boys Scoring, Winning 5-1 against Pep, great overall performance, Ode close to his best… what’s not to love.
The Epl race is nit over yet.
Go Gunners!!!
Someone needs to offer Thomas Partey a contract extension. He was simply brilliant.
Partey has to stay… Not certain we can find a player on the market who does what he does
Keep partey, allow jorgi leave… Go for isak and guimareas. We win the league by a mile… But knowing arteta he’d sign a defender and goal keeper
please! not cheating bruno!!!
We’re still in this. They will drop points. We will beat them.
And everton looking revitalized…
We will. We are better than Liverpool. They know it too
Everything about this result is wonderful: 5-1 thrashing, Pep’s impotent coaching, an unbanned Lewis Skelly scoring and parodying Haaland’s celebration, both teens scoring, a result which keeps Arsenal in the title race, Raya’s 2 huge first half saves, not to mention Havertz redeeming himself for a terrible miss with a well taken goal.
Michael Oliver’s absolutely seething right now.
To think we could have been deprived of MLS’s shithousery-cum-revenge arc by Michael Oliver… thank you FA review panel for showing some sense.
So many moments. Big gabby telling Haaland to fetch his boot has to be my pick
I didn’t realise that’s what he was going on about… “You’ve done nothing all game, at least make yourself useful and go fetch my boot ” 😅🤣😂
Arsenal give the four times champions a damn good thrashing. North London forever!
On our day, our first XI can beat anyone and pay the most attractive football. Just need a bit more depth to squad. Despite all the “ noise” hope we don’t “panic buy”
“play” not “pay”
I have loved this team through the ups and downs this season. They fight through it all. If ever a team represented the attitude of the coach this one does.
that mls kid, man is he a player.
now watch them go to Newcastle and overturn the tie.
Am I allowed to stay humble?
You may not
It was fun!
Fuck yes!! Take that, you Sky-blue scumbags!!!
I’ve been waiting for this for the last four years: us giving those cunts a good thrashing. And we deserved it.
The turning point was the Partey goal: after that they collapsed.
I’m happy for Havertz: he missed a sitter but then scored a great goal.
MLS and Nwaneri are both going to be Arsenal legends.
A thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Fats, this must be the first time everybody loves you :-))))
Partey was quite good today- positioning was great and he was always looking to go forward through their very lethargic looking midfield rather than the crab passes we have seen recently.
He was more than ‘quite good’!
Partey should NOT be allowed to leave this summer!
MLS. Ethan. OMG, we got world class talents in our hands. Brilliant performances all over the pitch. MOTM is between Raya and MLS for me. Raya kept us in it with those 2 brilliant saves. MLS was sensational in defense and offense. On to Newcastle. Surely we can put 4 past those twats. COYG
Raya’s ball distribution was impacable. 10/10
Who is OMG ?
OMG= Oh My God
Might need a modern dictionary. We need to keep up with Gen Z gooners
I know, just joking. But prefer the BFG and the HFB.
Peter Bankes been reported to PMGOL for allowing 11 Arsenal players in a city game
To be fair to the guy, he did let Berbnardo Silva commit his cynical, niggly fouls with impunity today.
Oh my!!!
Where did that come from?!
When you shout ‘go and buy a striker’ then they score 5 goals against the champions!!!
Now let’s go and buy the £1.2billion striker 😜
Omg the one time I miss a City match, what just happened?
Well done boys!! COYG!
Imagine paying half a million quid a week to Ian Dowie with a ponytail? Stay humble you inbred looking mother f*cker.
