Gibbs: I thought my career was over

Kieran Gibbs has revealed how a phone call from a doctor delivering bad news about an injury actually lifted his spirits.

The left back had his metatarsal broken by a nasty challenge in a November 2009 Champions League game, and subsequently missed the rest of the season.

Such was the seriousness of the injury Gibbs felt his career was in doubt and feared the worst when the doctor called. Speaking to the official Arsenal Magazine, he explained:

“Breaking my foot triggered quite a lot of my injuries. It took me eight or nine months to get over that injury, which turned out to be really serious in the end. I remember the doctor ringing me. He said he had bad news, and I thought he was going to tell me I wouldn’t be able to play again.

“In fact, he told me I needed to have more surgery, and funnily enough the boost that gave me was massive. Coming from a moment when you think that’s it, you’re finished, to one where you realise you can carry on is such a great feeling, a massive relief, and I used it as motivation to approach my recovery positively.

“Before that I’d never really had injuries, but in the next couple of years I had quite a few and it was really frustrating. I did my knee and rolled my ankle, and later on I had a hernia. I just got on with it and never really listened to any comments.

“I just knew the most important thing was that I got back and let people judge me on my football.”

Having firmly established himself as the first choice left back and one of the club’s most consistent performers, especially in difficult circumstances this season, fans will be glad Gibbs, along with others, has signed a new deal which will keep him at the club until 2017 at least.

And he’s determined to pay back the club for backing and believing in him while he was out injured.

“I don’t take it lightly. It just increases what I want to give back to the team and the people who’ve given me the chance to represent Arsenal.

“I feel very privileged and determined to do well for this club, and repay the faith they’ve shown.”

Absolutely top lad. Still a few weaknesses in his game, but you can’t help but think he’s going to have a great future at the club!

Thaatarsenalguy

One of our best players this seasonn

diaby

Yep, he’s made a couple of costly errors but who hasn’t? Overall I’d say he’s one of our most important and impressive players. Glad he’s signed a contract extension!

kierangibbs'legs

LOL. He saved us our champions league spot last season!

ThaatArsenalGuy

haha the “£40 million Pound Tackle” as some news outlets were calling it!

Joe

he’s consistently solid. positional sense can improve but if we can keep him fit then experience will take care of that. one of my favourite players.

ollie

I like gibbs alot, he gives his all every week and he is turning into one of the best left backs in the league. Great offensively but does need to improve defensively bit. COYG!!!

undercovermancgooner

I love how he’s managed to sneak into our first team with none of the hype and fuss that’s normally made of a young English player.

With Cashley getting on, I think he’ll be challenging Baines to represent England at the next couple of world cups!

Tunde Famakinwa

You know, it is not wrong for Arsenal to go local @ all. The British boys are doing quite well, Thumbs up Gibbo!

Mooro

Despite being in the middle of a perennial shitstorm, there is hope for the future with the core of youngsters we’ve got, including the likes of Gibbs.

But for fucks sake, give em a chance of being successful and get a squad that’s capable of challenging for something other than 4th, or it’ll be a waste of a decent generation of players.

subeyr

Who remembers that tackle last game of last season that guaranteed us champions league football ? What a tackle !!

doc8

The 30-million-pound tackle…world class

Sexy Gibbs
R18

One of the players in the team along with wilshere who seem to give a fuck. So very impressed by him, he seems a staunch gunner.

I get excited seeing him attacking blissfully with that magical left foot of his. Could only get better.
I love him.

Christy

arsenal needs 2 be ruthless infront of goals 4example we missed a lot of glaring opportunities ow can arsenal loose 2 a chelsea that under-per4MD it just shows ow depleted arsenal is gibbs has really improved evenRamsey i wonder Y arshavin isn’t getting a regular playing tym wenger is killing this team himself Sagna has shown that football has left him and wenger has refusd 2 let him go cz he’s french Y did arsene release SONG we missed SONG more than we missed Van-Persie.

DoubleDoubleDouble

Translation?

Joe

Your English teacher should stand up and take a bow. Ever heard of punctuation?

Sachin joseph

P.u.n.c.t.u.a.t.i.o.n

Tunde Famakinwa

I guess he needs to be more ruthless with his punctuation!

Judgement day (once more)

Top, top lad!
Give him a year or two to erase his short comings and you will be looking at one of the greatest left backs in the world.

I do thing Baines will be the England no. 1 choice, but let´s be honest. He´s a fucking amazing footballer.

Now, let´s sign some top top quality players before February shows it´s cold, ugly face.

R18

Um that would be the whole spurs contigent, the players, fans, staff, manager e.t.c. Hoping for an arsenal slip up. Too bad for them.

But this season they have a greater chance than us. 🙁

R18

@subeyr.

Ninad Kuchekar

I hope he stays fit throughout. The backup options don’t look encouraging. Meade is still not ready for the first team. But Gibbs looks much more comfortable on the ball and has better ball control than Cashley.

R18

David Villa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mooro

Is the wrong side of 30 and has had injury problems, BUT, knows where the onion is and has told Barca he wants out this month (apparently).

The only question is, would he improve our squad? Now let’s start by comparinghim to our current back-up CF…..

Oh, we ain’t fuckin got one. Question answered.

R18

Judging by the conversion of shots on goal we don’t even have a clinical CF let alone a back up. Villa is indeed 31 years old, we could argue he has 2-3 years at the top level left. That’s debatable anyway.

Right now I just want a quick CF fix and David Villa seems it!

Mooro

He’d do for me as well at this precise moment mate.

sube

Sorry for Gibbs. He really had a good game and is a good player playing in an average squad.

100K A WEEK TWAT

only in arsenal is where Gibbs is considered world. we are the new Liverpool I’m afraid

kevs

He is a good player, i think no one have mentioned him as an world class player.

Fatgooner

Gibbs has had an excellent season so far. I just pray that he doesn’t get injured, because we don’t have any cover. Brilliant article by Arseblog today. The lack of in-depth quality and options at the club is outrageous. And still Wenger won’t buy anybody. Yesterday, at 1-2 we were crying out for a decent forward to come on. A Demba Ba or a Llorente could have earned us a point, but instead we had the useless, fat Arshavin, who came on and did nothing. It’s fucking unbelievable that we ONLY HAVE ONE OUT-AND-OUT STRIKER AT THE CLUB. Maybe Wenger… Read more »

repeating speculation in full caps doesn’t make it true, it’s still speculation

buying a player doesn’t ensure we’ll finish top four, not buying a player doesn’t mean we won’t either. because it hasn’t happened yet, we don’t know – and if fatgooner can actually tell the future i suspect he’d be getting blown by supermodels on a private caribbean island having won all the world’s major lottery jackpots, rather than getting angry about lack of transfer action at the arsenal. just a thought.

Fatgooner

Oh, I see. So The fact that we only have one striker is speculation, is it? I suppose that you’re from the Arsene Wenger (blind) school which believes that you can ignore patent deficiencies at a football club and still somehow achieve your goals. Wenger is running this club down into mid-table mediocrity. By refusing to sign quality players he is condemning us to a fate similar to that of Liverpool. If you can’t see that then you’re a fool. We won just one out of nine points so far this year, and the gap between us and Spurs is… Read more »

the only sam is nelson

oh dear, now you’re confusing fact with opinion.

in your opinion we only have one striker; others might disagree, particularly if they’ve earned 100 caps for Germany playing up front. or for that matter if they’ve just signed a nice fat £100K a week contract extension.

and i didn’t say whether i agreed with you or not

but apart from confusing fact and opinion, presenting your own prediction as fact and not understanding my post, great point

Frog

That player that has over 100 caps for Germany is a winger for the arsenal. That’s not speculation, that’s a fact. Arsene chose to play that fucknut gervinho as a striker over podolski, that means I have about the same chance as our German of starting as a striker. theo is not a Cf, end of. That leaves us with one proper CF, and I personally don’t think he’s good enough to be the top striker at arsenal. So Sam, you are correct about one thing, buying a player doesn’t guarantee where we will finish. We are way beyond that… Read more »

ayt

Wenger won’t be buying anyone, he will buy an 19 year old boy from France, and maybe a “quality” player from Turkey.

Merlin's Panini

I hope it’s a top top top top top top top top top top top top top top top top top top top top top top top quality player.

Los Polandos

Numbers don’t lie – best tackle/faul ratio in the team, best in interceptions per game and at the same time passionate going forward (third in key passes!). I think we are not too far from having a finished article on a left back, Dennis permit.
His cold blooded delivery and consistency this season reminds me of certain Bacary Sagna, who lately behaves like a Bambi after it’s mum got shot.

weedwacker

Good good player. A couple of times yesterday he showed tremendous dribbling skill against the touchline with two defenders on him and came away with the ball and made the.

Nicolae

Where there is passion in play and attitude, mistakes are easily forgotten by history.

Highbury

“I don’t take it lightly. It just increases what I want to give back to the team and the people who’ve given me the chance to represent Arsenal.

“I feel very privileged and determined to do well for this club, and repay the faith they’ve shown.”

That’s what I thought RVP might have said last summer….. But no….. cos he’s a CUNT!

good old jens

defensive liability, constantly at blame for opposition goals(Newcastle, Swansea, Bradford). Has managed to pull the wool over the majority of fan eyes with his ability going forward.

ThaatArsenalGuy

Bit harsh considering he’s part of a pourous defence. Yeah he’s made a few mistakes, but that’s more symptomatic of our general style of play. His attacking contribution is more effective at the moment. but the defensive side will improve , don’t worry
