Marc Overmars has revealed he is open to working for Arsenal in the future and confirmed a backroom role would best suit him.
The 39-year-old Dutchman is currently Ajax’s director of football where he works on the technical side of the game with former teammates including manager Frank de Boer and coaches Wim Jonk, Jaap Stam and Dennis Bergkamp.
Speaking to the Evening Standard about his plans for the future, Overmars admitted he’s not yet spoken to Arsene Wenger about working together again but confirmed he believes the Arsenal board might already have earmarked him as a possible addition to the hierarchy.
“When you get older as a player, you work out what your qualities are for the future. I was quite fast to realise being a manager was not my job.
“The way I work with Ajax, I do the transfers, the contracts and organise the scouting, so it suits me. It wouldn’t surprise me if I work in the future at Arsenal — it could be a possibility.
“I’ve never discussed it with Arsene Wenger. But if the board think about the future and make a list of people to work at the club, it wouldn’t surprise me if I am on the list of people.
“However, at this moment, I want to stay at Ajax.”
Overmars joined the Gunners in 1997 and quickly established himself as a Highbury hero with his jinking runs and low right-foot drives helping the club to the Double in his first season.
Despite being the first of the Wenger era to quit N5 for the Camp Nou he never lost his popularity in North London like some of his predecessors. Indeed, whenever he has returned to the Emirates he’s always been greeted as a long lost son.
After yesterday’s news of Bergkamp’s statue at the Emirates, what price on us going double Dutch again?
Dick Law, get your coat champ.
D’be over the mars…..moon if he did come back. Along with bergkamp ofcourse.
Bring DB10 with you and I might just cream my pants. Cheers.
Jeez how the hell is he only 39!?
He retired before he was 32. He was always a fragile little chap.
This is very true. Due to his speed, his knees didn’t last very long (in terms of a footballers career). Still, we got to have during his peak and we can only be thankful for that
maybe that’s his football age, not the real one.
great..bring bergkamp,fischer and eriksen along
Oh Marc, why you ever went to Barca is beyond me (well, I think it was the money).
Then again we ended up with Pires…
‘I moved from Arsenal to Barca before it was cool’ – Hipster Overmars
The idea of your comment is good, but the way you wrote it is repulsive. “Before it was cool and hipster”, urg.
Not sure if up vote or down vote, to speak your language !!
Guess that answer that 🙂
‘I thumbed you down before it was call’ – 23 hipster arseblog readers
COOL* Bloody useless brain and fingers. Luckily they sound similar if you put on some sort of accent….
It just shows that people seem to like it. Not me. I can take the down votes because of it. I’m glad I didn’t make one of the nastier comments seen around here!
If only he had grown a beard and a handlebar mustache.
Predecessors?? Surely you mean successors
Marc “Meep Meep” Overmars
Would have loved to have seen Pires, Overmars and Freddie toying with defences!
Is it me or is arsenal the only club where former players, without being approached, pitch in for a job? Director of football yes, any good, perhaps not…
Well, Ajax seem to believe in him and they have a very good history if finding and nurturing young talent.
Still got his self belief aswell
Bould, Dennis, Overmars….younger footballing men like these can take us back to the top. Wenger seems like a manager from another era now…its time for a change.
this is the worssssssssssssssssssssssst ………………….
“I do the transfers, the contracts and organise the scouting”, that’s exactly what we need
thinks a lot of himself doesn’t he?
Blogs, if im correct….it was jinking runs, and low LEFT footed drives.
If im wrong il gladly take my coat and simply blame age. ( i was 10 in ’98).
Wasn’t he a right footed left winger?
If I remember correctly he was pretty useful with both feet, but yes predominantly right footed. Why you got a thumbs down for that I don’t know
No song for us this afternoon Joe Starkey?
That’s great but he was never a long lost son to me. He deserted us and as such my affection for him did like wise. It’s small minded but it is what it is, vieira included but not henry. I would have the ice Dennis before marky Marc everytime. I find that comment he made is a touch disrespectful. As in “of course they would have me, they are shit”. Is that barca on the phone? See ya then.
first ever arsenal match i went to was in 1999 , gunners v middlesbrough , overmars scored a hat trick , DB10 got 2 aswell one woz a cracker free kick !
been a die hard fan since ! i fucking love arsenal …………………… look @ the line up Seaman, Dixon, Winterburn, Grimadi, Adams; Petit, Parlour,
Ljungberg, Overmars; Bergkamp, Kanu
henery and suker on the bench ! some team ………………………
those we the good old days !
ps keep up the good work blogs read this every day !
afc all the way , GUNNER FOR LIFE
I wonder if he was quicker than Theo…he was awfully fast
If that Fat Uzbek wants to win the Arsenal faithful over, he should recruit former greats like Dennis, Marc, Titi ect. to be our
Backroom and Executive staff at the club. Kronke out!!!
overmars still overly confident as usual. but thats what i like about him cos he had the quality to be like that.
the dutch have great players they also make great coaches.
