Johan Djourou is attracting Bundesliga interest from HSV Hamburg as his future remains up in the air.
The Swiss international spent the second half of last season on loan at Hannover 96, making 19 appearances in the German top flight, and there has been talk of him extending that deal into next season.
However, as with other situations, wages are an issue, and today Bild report that Hamburg have Djourou on their radar. Again, not as a permanent signing but for a season long loan.
Whether Arsenal have deigned Djourou to be as dispensable as players like Denilson, Bendtner, Chamakh and Park remains to be seen.
He’s still got some years left on his contract and the Gunners will try to maximise their return on a player who lost his way after showing some serious promise.
I’m not at all concerned if he stays or goes, hes good enough that he is handy cover for severe injury problems i.e Mertesacker and 1 of the other 2 out(he’s no Squilachi). but hes not so good that his loss hurts our line up too much other than depth, so the question is, can we improve on him by signing a player content to be 4th choice for the foreseeable future. Im not convinced we can, any signing on a par with our current 3 dcs will be demanding plenty of game time which frankly we can’t afford to… Read more »
I absolutely go with your conclusion there, no good enough and ambitious player would want to come and fill in, only, for injured regulars of any team. So I suggest we keep him for now till a good teenager develops well from the Academy.
And may be by that time he too might have become a regular himself, who knows? 🙂
Why aren’t newly promoted/relegation threatened teams biting our hand off for Johan? I don’t think he’s good enough to be an Arsenal reg but could really do a job at a lesser club and I’m guessing a bid in the region of 3-4 mil would do it. Miquel is 21 now so surely deserves a bit of game time.
Wages
He was in the team that beat Barcelona 2-1, must say something about his ability
He was in the team that conceded 8 goal against Manchester utd and 5 against Reading if I remember correctly. Personaly I dont like seeing him and Kos together and it is not becouse of Kos. Maybe he can stay and play with Vermaelen. That could be interesting to see.
If he does stay out on loan, or even if we sell him Mike above is correct, it will hurt us in terms of squad depth. With the luck we have with injuries some times, we are only two away from playing Mique ( who i rate highly but need some more experience)l or moving Sagna into a CB role again, and although he did not do to bad in that role, I would much prefer and out and out CB as cover..
I’d be happy to see Djourou back, provided he’s never allowed to play at right back again. That said I would like to see a bit more of Ignasi Miquel next season as I think the kid has got something about him. I don’t necessarily think we need to buy in the centre back position whatever happens.
Imagine putting Vidic, Ferdinand, Hangeland Tec at Right Back, some players are not suited to it despite being quality defenders. So the blame is on Arsene for that one.
I remember Skrtel playing RB for Liverpool once, it was one of the worst defensive displays ever in the premier league despite the fact he is a decent defender.
Yeah but we were desperate at the time – IIRC Sagna, Jenkinson, and Coquelin were all injured, so our only options were Djourou, Ramsey, or a youth team player.
I remember a couple years ago, Fergie had an injury crisis at CB so he played a 3-man back line featuring a reserve team player, Carrick, and Evra… these things happen to the best of us.

Thanks for the loyalty and service over these mixed 8 yrs or so. Now go, don’t be another bendtner who just won’t stop hovering around.
Harsh. At least Johan’s humble and eloquent, and tries hard for his loan club.
I hope Hamburg is strongly linked with Djourou’s FULL salary so we can use the freed up money for more quality at Arsenal, otherwise he is just Squilarshavin or ShamBendtPark on holiday in Europe.
I still rate him very highly. Given proper opportunity at CB, from all I have seen him do there, I dare say he can even challenge for first team. He’s got it in him to be a top, top CB. The only problem is he has got absolutely no ability at RB.
About time we judge him on his efforts at CB and not the disaster he became at RB.
I agree. I felt sorry for Djourou in the 11/12 season when he was dumped at right-back and played horribly. 10/11 season, we would have lamented his loss as he was playing so well. Djourou is certainly not in the same boat as Squillaci, Denilson, Chamakh and co. He’s nowhere near as bad as some suggest but he lost so much confidence and form during that spell at right-back that he simply hasn’t recovered and should now be looking elsewhere to get his career back on track. He did pretty well at Hannover and I think the Bundesliga would be… Read more »
It is funny how things change so quickly. 2-3 years ago the CB pairing was Djourou +1, last year it was Koscielny +1, this year it was Mertesacker +1.
People also forget that the record for most consecutive clean sheets in CL belongs to Eboue, Toure, Senderos and Flamini. Out of the four, only Toure can be considered a world class player. This shows you that “normal”, unfavoured people can achieve almost as much as those that are naturally talented if they put their minds to it and have a positive support behind them.
We really missed Flamini when he left. Fabregas did too. They had great potential together.
That’s a great point about the CL record. Also, during our unbeaten season, Cygan started something like 15 games in the league. I think a big factor in both cases was the experience of Lehmann behind them, as well as the consistent presence of Gilberto shielding the back four. Hopefully Szczesny can become more consistent next season – we have that Gilberto-type calm midfielder in Arteta now, supported by the work rate of Ramsey.
Agree with Tsotia, he still has potential to be a top CB. I’d like to see he loaned in the EPL to build his confidence. Wages for a year would be around the £1.5 million mark probably, definitely worth a place in the side at a lesser club like Spurs or Liverpool.
Goodbye djourou, don’t let the door hit ur backside on ur way out
I had the pleasure of sharing a beer with his adopted parents whilst living in Geneva – lovely they were too.
Would be a shame to lose him for that if nothing else (Mrs. Lanesra LOVES hearing that story every time he is on TV).
Hope he will get on with the locals – if he has any trouble he should ask Arshavin – I hear he hasenjoyed a good relationship with hamburgers in recent years

does anybody actually know how he got on Hannover i those 19 games?
It’s not scientific, but here are Kicker Magazine’s rankings for the season: http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/bundesliga/vereine/1-bundesliga/2012-13/hannover-96-58/31772/spieler_johan-djourou.html I only mention them because Kicker actually puts a lot of effort into their match reports and rankings (not to mention, it’s a great magazine to read for German football news in general). Their ranking system goes from 1-6, but higher numbers are actually worse. So in this case (3.82), he was rated as being a below average defender compared to the league. However, it makes sense that HSV might still be interested because their central defenders (again, according to Kicker’s ratings) were terrible – Heiko Westermann… Read more »
Of most of the players we aim to get rid of this season and have been unable to because of our crazy wage structure. He’s one that deserve respect. So good luck to him.
I’m putting the kettle on, anyone else want a brew?
That spell he had. Super commited and lightening reactions for about a month. Confidence is a complex thing. Literally destroying the chance of a reasonably talented individual getting past mediocre.
Yeah – it happened to Senderos too. It’s easy to forget that in 2005, he was playing so well that he kept a fit Sol Campbell (in the prime of his career!) on the bench during the FA Cup final against Man Utd. Not only that, but we played 120 minutes and kept a clean sheet. These days he’s fighting for playing time with Aaron Hughes…
“Life lessons”
Had a real giggle at that today blogs as it reminded me of my own youth a lot.
But what the hell has that got to do with arsenal other than the reference to David O’Leary?
I know news is slow today but come on! 😉

I assume his general point Micko is that if you got nothing worth saying then just be quiet. Unlike the many bloggers and newspapers and pundits at this time of year who have nothing to report yet insist on shouting from the rooftops.
