Report: Swansea 1-2 Arsenal

Arsenal: Szczesny, Sagna, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Gibbs, Wilshere, Ramsey, Flamini, Ozil, Gnabry, Giroud

Subs: Fabianski, Vermaelen, Monreal, Jenkinson, Arteta, Ryo, Bendtner

Arsenal moved back to the top of the table with a 2-1 win over Swansea at the Liberty Stadium this evening. As expected, Arsene Wenger brought back big guns like Ozil, Ramsey, Wilshere and Giroud, while Serge Gnabry kept his place despite playing 120 minutes in midweek.

The home side seemed to settle into the game more quickly with JonJo Shelvey having the first attempt, firing over from distance, before Arsenal saw a Kieran Gibbs cross roll across the 6 yard box.

Per Mertesacker then headed powerfully wide after an Aaron Ramsey cross as the Gunners tried to get a hold on the game. Olivier Giroud might have done better with a Mesut Ozil pass in the 12th minute but found himself robbed on the edge of the box.

Aaron Ramsey almost added to his goal tally this season when he drilled a 25 yard shot just wide of Vorm’s post while at the other end Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs both had to be alert to cut out incisive Swansea passes.

There was a goalkeeping scare when the previously assured Szczesny looked to see the ball out of play. The ball did go out but Swansea poked it back in and  played it across goal at which point the linesman had his flag up.

The half was mostly about possession with both defences playing well and cutting out the chances, so it was no surprise that it finished without an attempt on target. However, Arsenal had a glorious chance to go ahead in first half injury time.

Serge Gnabry went on a great run through the centre of the Swansea defence, he played it into Giroud who had a clear sight of goal but he dragged his left-footed shot wide of the far post.

It was the young German who had the first shot on target early in the second half. Arsenal worked it through midfield out to Gnabry on the right hand side, he cut back inside and took a left footed shot which was easily saved by Vorm.

It was telling then that it was the 18 year old who broke the deadlock in in the 58th minute. A good spell of Arsenal possession saw us to get to the edge of their box. Giroud had it, a Swansea foot took it away from him but played it Ramsey who clipped it first time into the path of the young German who drilled it into the bottom corner. 1-0.

Moments later the yellows doubled the lead. Szczesny played it out quickly, we stormed upfield, Wilshere won the ball with a crunching tackle and after some great interplay between him and Giroud they fed Ramsey who stepped inside and smashed home his 8th goal of the season.

Wilfried Bony saw his shot blocked by Koscielny as the Swans pressed for a goal, and Wojciech Szczesny had to be on his toes to push a powerful Nathan Dyer effort around the post. The Pole had to be smart again as Bony took advantage of a Wilshere/Gibbs mix-up to deny him space at the near post.

Mikel Arteta replaced the impressive Gnabry in the 77th minute as Arsene Wenger looked to shore up the game, but the home side got one back in the 81st minute. Davis cut in from their left hand side, he was tracked by Sagna but played it into a teammate on the edge of the box. He played it over the defence, Davis kept running and poked it past the onrushing Szczesny.

Laudrup’s men then claimed a penalty as Sagna booted the ball into Flamini’s hand but referee Clattenburg waved play on. Monreal replaced Ozil in the 88th minute as Swansea dominated possession in the final stages.

Wojciech Szczesny was confident in goal, claiming a series of crosses and corners as the pressure was on, and the Gunners hung on for 3 valuable points.

just had to comment. been on ”The Grauniad” comment section trolling utd fans, lol. suspected u were a gooner! kudos to you

S__i__r__B__a__l__l__s

Boring first 60 minutes, the next 30 were slightly better.

At this moment, it almost seems like the top teams are giving us a head start in the league.

Overall we have had the easiest fixture list, however we have laid some foundations and it will be interesting to see if we can remain top untill our first real test on the 10th of November.

WizardOfOzil

You must have made a mistake, we’re actually playing United that day. As West Brom have proven today, if you have a solid plan you should get the 3 points.

Edu's fake passport

Piss off you troll, just because Moyes is a shit manager you have to bore us Arsenal fans.

The 8 year wait is finally over!!

Ruud Van Horseface

Sir ‘needs a drop kick in the’ Balls – was a game against a free spending, full of beans dust bin lids (currently 2nd in the PL) not a challenge? Do me a favour you gonad and bore off.

notamerican

Is sir balls unbannable?

heroldgoon

This is the 1st time in a long time we have capitalises on the slip ups of our rivals…..

well done lads top of league.

aussie gooner

enjoy the fact that we are winning without playing our best, and all this without podolski, cazorla, Ox and rosicky. if we can get through napoli and west brom, should have a very good squad with all the players coming back after the break.

surprised at the timing of substitutions considering how tired some of the players looked. should have been done earlier

deano

let us hope we don’t lose anymore players during that bloody break.

I just have two things to say after todays match:

Firstly: Love it, or hate it, the Underdog’s on top!

Secondly: Who needs van Persie when you’ve got Ramseyyyyy! Seriously, I remember last season, when he would take a wayward shot, and smile afterwards. I used to be so irritated. But now, if he smiles after a wayward shot, I smile too, and I say: Bless you, son. You’ve earned the right!

SB

Wonder what the little boy inside RVP is saying now! Playing for Moyes but a nightmare come true.

AW mentioned RVP couldn’t wait – it could well be just an yr delay but far more satisfying!

Arsepedant

The little boy is saying “Can I please come back?”, and Sir Arsene is telling the little boy to fuck off.

Wenger's magic hat

A close friend of mine worked at RVP’s management company before he left, as a gooner he used to talk to him whenever he came in. RVP had nothing but bad things to say about Ramsey, really thought he was a bad player apparently. Well I hope you’re watching, Robin.

Jeff

I wouldn’t dwell too much on that. Apart from Wenger (he’s a genius), I don’t think many people saw Ramsey turning into the all conquering midfield general and goal machine he is now after that horrendous injury. I thought that cretin had ruined his career, and it really made me so angry and sad at the same time. Now I just smile in amazement every time I see him scoring beautiful goals and putting in MOTM shifts consistently.

You can stick that one up your mug-mashing ass Owen.

So you read that article Owen wrote about us?

Neither did i! But it was about Arsenal and it had in the title owen so naturally it was going to be rubbish and biased.

Im tired of all pundits being Liverpools ex players their like rats crawling out of the wood work .

TOGooner

Maybe its just that Michael Owen is a cunt? Carragher is quite obviously no Gary Neville when it comes to ‘punditry’ (what a disgusting word), but he’s a bit of an AKB…

He basically said, we weren’t a top four side and only really had one player of worth and that player was the one we have just bought. Yawns.

Can’t remember the last time I touched cloth when we were defending.

Silent Stan's Content Mustache

1. Koscielny/Gibbs MoM for me
2. Im starting to think there is something very special about this team.

Fellonious

That defeat to those whoremonger sp*urs and that defeat to an admittedly good Bayern side at home, really lit a fire under these boys’ arses. I felt it at the time when that game in Muunich ended tbo, but who would have thought it would last this long? Proud gunner today. Wenger is showing up his critics the best way possible I reckon.

Fellonious

Oh a and a bit of luck doesn’t hurt either.

With our away record, maybe we could consider Yellow & blue be our home colours as well!

Lovegood

We’re playing in front of a home crowd everytime we play awaygames. Big up to everyone at our awaygames!

walker

Related to this, does anyone know why we’re wearing that kit so much? It’s obviously very nice but the team seems to be wearing the new away strip even when the red and white would be fine (yesterday just being the most recent example). Is this just marketing or is there something more to it that I’m missing?

The little boy inside of me always wanted to play for a mid-table club in Northwest England where there is only one Italian restaurant and it’s called Carluccios. The little boy inside of me thinks Aaron Ramsey is a terrible player and is much happier receiving service from of a midfield that consists of a fat Brazilian, an ex-Spud player and a constipated Portuguese. The little boy inside of me likes to complain about a lot of things. And serge gnabry take a bow son. Can’t believe some fans were hating on him after his first two games. How are those humble pies coming along?

Bonjour

I don’t recall many people hating on him! He played it safe for his debut and put in a very confident performance today! Looks to have a bright future here. I’m very happy with the results today. Swansea are very a special team too, Bony’s assist for their goal was a very good imitation of the Giroud flick. So it was a great performance to soak up their pressure and come out victors. And thank you referee for being the first one in Premier League history to have the balls to book opposition players for clattering Wilshere, it’s about time.… Read more »

Why does it have to be complete? We need wenger now more than ever!

It seems that the only way we can consede a goal is a lofted ball over BFG for a runner or a Kos giving away a penalty. Basically what I’m saying is we are very solid. 🙂 Serge, congrats on first PL goal, may there be many more to come! And Aaron fucking Ramsey, take a bow son, take a bow!

Swansea had the better possession over the game but you know, its how many goals you concede or not is what matters. Ramsey….fuck me, meta-fucking-morphosis.

I don’t know what Gnabry had for his half time tea, but he came alive at the end of the first and took his chance well.

tamilgunner

More possession not equal to better possession

Arsenal have the new strategy (IMO):
1. Go for early goal
2. Tire out opposition in the first half(still try a few counters)
3. Step it up in the second half , scoring a few goals
4. Sit back

“Gnabry is knackered”.
“Gnabry shouldn’t be starting”.
“Miyaichi isn’t Arsenal material”.

I wish people would lay of our players and support them whole-heartedly. Leave the critiquing to the coaches.

Clock End Mike

I’ve certainly not been lacking in support of Gnabry, but I confess I was one of those who said after the Stoke and midweek games that he wasn’t yet ready for first-team football, and needed more confidence. I suggested he’d get that with experience. I also said before the match today I was surprised to see him start, he was knackered 3 days ago after playing 120 minutes. Well, he had the confidence today, showed no tiredness, and the experience will have done him the world of good. Looking much more like the player we’ve seen in the reserves, driving… Read more »

Coulditbe

I always said if we beat swanse and napoli we’ll be in for a great year. Now I honestly think we can challenge for the title.

GM

I’ve gotta be honest; I sort of hope we go out of our european group.

I’d rather win the league and go out of europe first stage than get to the quarterfinals and finish third or fourth. our squad is just too small. I know we have players out but there will always be players out.

So yeah, as terrible as it sounds, I sort of hope we lost to Napoli, SOLELY BECAUSE I think we have a real chance at the league this year.

Clock End Mike

You mean come bottom of the group? You surely don’t want us to be playing on Thursday nights?

I can’t really understand fans who want Arsenal to lose. Yes, if we do, we’ll be able to look on the bright side. But while we’re still in the competition, we actually have a chance to win it. And I know the boss would love to have a first European Championship as much as he’d love to win the Premier League again.

gammhunn

I’ll never understand someone who wants Arsenal to lose, especially so in the Champions League.

The financial booster pack that comes with making it out of the group stages is too nice.
Third in the group means EL, i.e. even less rest compared to staying in CL

Last but not least. It’s the Arsenal FFS. You’re going to call yourself a supporter/fan, sit there and hope the other team wins? Not cool man.

Arsene's Dick

Sometimes i feel these reply’s have been left before the gamed ended. Man you guys are fast

dk

What a perfect day for gooners! I couldn’t have scripted it any better if I’d tried. Brilliant game by Gnabry and not just because of the excellent goal. If he’d stayed on for the full 90 we may not have conceded. Ramsey was his usual legendary self. I cannot describe the absolute high I’m on right now. Keep up the work rate boys and the league is ours. COYG!!

Goononymous

When Theo comes back he better be properly motivated to earn his spot back from Obi Wan Gnarby. With the injured troops returning, there is still room for the team to get even better, which should scare the shit out of the rest of the league. Cheers to 17 years of Arsene Wenger!

TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!!!!

Too Drunk To Be Offside

The kind of results that are the foundation of league wins.

Well done Ramsey. Gnabry finally came into his own and played with confidence and will only grow in confidence as he gets more games. Rambo is well the best player in the league. Ozil should have gotten his first today, but ah well he will have plenty of more opportunities.

Brilliant Brilliant Lads.

ken

Gnabry finally came into his own? He turned 18 in July, second ever start for Arsenal in the premier league. FRICKIN FINALLY scored right?! wtf

Too Drunk To Be Offside

I am fascinated that you somehow found something negative in that above post. Gnabry was distinctive unspectacular in his first two outings … not that anyone expected him to set the world on fire, but one didn’t see what was so special about him. He was a simple recieve the pass, and pass on player. Was easy to tackle against Stoke gave away possession a few times. Again no one siad he was to do a Messi and score 5 goals, and obviously required more games to adjust to this level. In the League Cup he was by and large… Read more »

gammhunn

Don’t see the negativity in the above post either. Gnabry kept things very simple in his first two outings, seemingly trying to find his feet. For those of us who have seen him at youth level, this was worrying (he’s the sort of player that needs a lot of self-confidence)

And then, after a 120 minute mid-week game, he puts in what I consider to be a MOTM performance.

One or two more games like this and Theo will certainly not simply walk back in the team when he returns from injury.

Ruud Van Horseface

I second Too Drunks sentiment – Finally?!?! Are you sure? Without trying to be too down on you personally it’s that kind of attitude that makes playing away a more enjoyable experience for certain players these days than an emirates that is very quick to turn. I imagine the amazing successes that came before this barren spell, and the plethora of johnny-come-latelys with it, are responsible for a crippling lack of patience and an incredulous habit of laying the blame for our troubles at the feet of junior squad members finding their feet when their performances aren’t that of Henry/Vieira/Bergkamp… Read more »

Teams about us dropping points. Us making pundits eat their words. Keep it up you beautiful Gunners!

Also, well done on another super quick match report from the Blogger too.

always above spurs

Even if spurs finish second we will be always above them by winning the league .

Something seemed to click with Gnabry after his drive and layoff to Giroud at the end of the first half. He gained that belief he needed, and boy did it pay off in the 58th minute.

Best away team in premier league history backed by the best away fans by a absolute mile. Well done to both.

Good Omens

Remember who were the last team with the best record in premier league history ? Oh yeah that was us too. 2001/2002. Happy Days… are here again.

Clock End Mike

Not sure what record you’re referring to. Our current eight consecutive away victories in the Premier League equals our previous best of eight in 2001-02. But the record for consecutive away wins in the Premier League is 11, set by Chelsea in 2008. Way to go yet.
