I was thinking the same thing, Kos back and surprise surprise, we can actually fucking defend a 1 goal lead. That’s where I think Wenger messed it up in the summer, not making defensive reinforcements. Great encouraging performance from our key players today. Santi was immense, Sanchez buzzed around, Welbeck I think he will become a great Signing and a Striker for us – Dare I say Ian Wright-ish.

An extra +1 for everyone. After an immense team performance all over the pitch against Dortmund the squad basically went out and tried the same again against west brom. Pressing high, defending in numbers. Another huge shift put in. Wednesday took a lot of effort and you could see it take its tole as the game went on yesterday. But we always put pressure on the ball, and always defended as a team. 3 points after the effort put in against Dortmund is immense. Where was the Real Cazorla before this week? And what has he done with that impostor?! Defence was better today, though we need to work on that offside trap (and personally I never like it when Mertersacker is even close to the halfway line, it gives me vertigo). As a Gooner, three points and a bit more “righting of the ship” is really all that matters. If we are going to do ratings, however, feel like it is important to keep in mind that we were one dodgy offside call and/or one crossbar away from calamity. True about the offside, but it’s probably fair to point out that it was an offside Fellaini pushing gibbs into Szcesny that cost us a point and possibly three last week.
When I think about the number of games I’ve said to myself ‘if the ref did his job then we’d have won, but you should never count on deicisons to win you the game’, I tend to think that these decisions matter less than we think. Unless we’re talking 49 games unbeaten style reffing.
Koscielny made our defence stable
Santi’s thriving from playing back through the middle again. It opens up options for him both left and right instead of only really having the choice to run at full backs. Will be interesting to see what happens once Ozil is back because I don’t think that option to pop one of them (Cazorla/Ozil) out on the left will be there anymore with Walcott, Welbeck and Alexis competing for those wide spots.
I have been wondering how much incidents influence our assessement of matches and players. This Arsenal team didn’t play badly against United at all. The first goal we let in against them was a bit freakish. And because we were attacking to equalize we let in the second as well. And then of course all hell broke loose :). Yeah, agree with this. The most frustrating thing about United though was that we didn’t need to go gung-ho the way we did after conceding. We still had time. Yeah it is great to see his confidence back enough to see him do those little dribbles that tackle advantage of the fact he’s about 3 and a half feet tall and has a center of gravity about at the level of most players’ knees. The desire to get goals is obviously important for a footballer, but comeon, he needs to realise his run of goals last season was from playing in a rather different set up. Ramsey is starting to get the simple things right which isnt saying much, but when hes off his game he can look very awkward. No problem with the shooting (didnt he have a ridiculous % of goals per shot last year?)…and weve been moaning about the lack of shots for years. The 90 yard effort at the end was pushing it though!

He’s done nothing wrong but hasn’t been called to really save our hides either the way Szcz tends to be every game he plays. Well done to get the win today. This team has always looked on the verge of turning things around but never actually has. Hopefully controlling the past 2 games and taking the 3 points today is the type of progress that sees us only taking steps forward. Making sure our defense is not exposed has been key to us staying in games the full 90 because our skill will always get us chances on goal but we can’t abandon the other side of the ball. I might have missed an update so can someone tell me if the bonus ratings gone forever? It would be a shame if they were. A performance rating of Chamakh’s hair or Grant Holt’s pie eating were always a welcome addition to this feature.
Solid performance today and nice to see Kos back, with Debuchy to come very soon. It is quite interesting with the GK situation because Martinez had very little to do in the last 2 games but either him or Ospina now have to put massive pressure on Szczesny because IMO that’s the only way we can progress with the obvious additions required in midfield and defence. Leapt like a salmon, he did. There was one replay where you could see him face on, and that little bit of film should be in every youth coach’s handbook, as a textbook example of how to take a header. Eyes on the ball, hands forward, yank the arms back as you power the head forward, hit the ball with the centre of your forehead, never closing your eyes. It was a thing of beauty.
There should be a rating for Mertescielny. The improvement in defense is noticeable.
Those holding up a banner at todays game are an absolute disgrace to this club. We’ve just won ffs, and beaten Dortmund. If you can’t support your team, don’t go to the game, don’t support this club, go and support chelsea, or man city, fickle f*$ks…..This attitude as well affects the team, the fans should be the 12th man, the emirates should be a F*&kin fortress, we should be singing the place down, believing in this team whether they’re playing badly, whether they win, lose or draw. People who say our Dms are not adequate Arteta in a 4-1-4-1 dominated Bender and Gundogan. Why? BC 4-1-4-1 is in reality 4-2-3-1. With Ramsey pushed forward alongside Santi, he is able to exert pressure on bender and Gundogan early leaving Arteta to cover Imobile. And it worked. As much as I liked most of our performance yesterday I was still shocked that we almost conceded a goal out of nowhere. We deserved the win. We deserved the win last week, too. But we have some moments when concentration drops.
Funny thing is when we are staying deep we have full control and opponents find it difficult to score. But counter attacks are still making me nervous. At least players start to foul early to stop the attack as quick as possible.

Flamini’s passing completion rate isn’t so much “Arteta-esque” as Flamini-esque. Last season, he & Arteta were often alternating as the league leader, along with the CBs; in the end the PL leaders were Koscielny, Mertesacker, Arteta & Flamini at 1st, 2nd, 4th & 6th overall, with only 0.6% between Arteta & Flamini. Pretty incredible to have 4 of the top 6 from one club. As for this season, Flamini is the league leader. WhoScored actually has Arteta ahead by 0.8%, but he (and many others) are excluded because he hasn’t played enough (only half as much as Flamini)
