Hodgson calls on Gunners trio

Roy Hodgson has named his England squad for the upcoming Interlull calling up Gunners’ trio Kieran Gibbs, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck.

The Three Lions take on Lithuania [home of Tomas Danilevicius] in a Euro 2016 qualifier on 27 March and then travel to Turin for a friendly with Italy four days later.

Gibbs and Walcott will no doubt be particularly pleased to get the nod given their comparative lack of game time at the Emirates, while Danny Welbeck can use the week to mock the Manchester United contingent. Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both miss out with injury.

Gareth Southgate has also named his England under-21 squad with Calum Chambers and Carl Jenkinson ready to fight it our for a right-back berth for games against the Czech Republic and Germany.

Say no to pointless injuries

Daft Aider

To be fair they are probably safer away with the England team then at the club these days

CB

So few midfielders and defenders that I can get excited about as an England fan. Attackers look decent but otherwise we don’t seem to have much top top quality (apart from Theo/Gibbsy of course) at all.

Three Man U defenders for example.

Dick Swiveller

Yeah, I’d rather see Chambers at CB than them but the fewer Arsenal playes open to injury the better.

Andy Mack

You can see how poor the England team is when they pick 3 defenders from the present ManUre team!!!!!

TeeCee

Odd really. I’m sure there are plenty of clubs that have English defenders with two left feet.
Why should ManU get preference?

Parisian Weetabix

Carrick’s not exciting perhaps but he’s always been an underrated player. He can recycle possession, which not many English defensive midfielders actually can, and it’s always handy to have someone like that at the base of the midfield. If we can get him and Jack playing alongside each other in central midfield England might actually be on the way to becoming an effective possession-based team, with Rooney, Sterling, Sturridge and Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of them. But yes, the defense is full of mid-table workhorses who can be relied upon to defend as a team but don’t have any truly world-class traits… Read more »

Andy Mack

Parisian Weetabix, He’s MF rather than a DF.

Parisian Weetabix

He’s usually the deepest lying midfielder though, right? He’s a bit like Arteta in that he’s a CDM so long as he has another reasonably defensively switched-on player alongside him in midfield, which I think Jack is at least capable of being having played DM before as well. It basically gives us two deep-lying playmakers in the team, and we aren’t worrying about how to squeeze Stevie G in there anymore. For me that’s a good platform to control a game from, which is important in the modern game if we want to become truly world class rather than entering… Read more »

Harry Kane (Ex-Arsenal) ? Meh…

Santozilexis

Harry Kane Ex-Arsenal lol

Tom

Harry Kane (Ex Arsenal) – expert trolling

MyNameIsDifficultToPronounce

He actually is though…

Nish

Not a single Chelsea player in the England squad.

Double98

Except Gary Cahill

lettraggad

Doesnt he still play for Bolton??

David C

who are their English players? Terry (retired), Cahill (selected). Am I missing anyone?

SB

One of the idiots in the English media was complaining that English talent like Wilshere don’t get opportunities in Arsenal because of foreign imports like Ozil and Cazorla!

Still waiting for those idiots to highlight Chelsea’s and ManC’s contribution or lack of!

We regularly field 3-4 British players in the starting XI these days!

PhoeniX

At club level, your ability decides if you’re in the starting XI or not. Also, Wilshere can’t complain. Ozil and Cazorla are head and shoulders above him.

High time the English stopped blaming the foreign talent for the lack of opportunities for English players. If so, close the borders then. Competition drives players to improve. Otherwise PL wouldn’t be where it is right now.

Tomas Danilevicius 🙂

gooner1981

Theo and Gibbs might get some game time, good for them. Chambers will probably start the U21s, Santi, Kos, Giroud, Rosicky, Rambo, Ozil. Hope Ospina doesn’t have a long-distance friendly. Thankfully Alexis has a home game 🙂 Could there be (not really) surprising call-ups for Bellerin, Monreal and Coquelin?

Double98

If i was Roy – i would see if Coquelin had naturalised or not…

but then i would hope that some Arsenal fan beat me up for considering it…

Pete

About time we had a GB team.

Joe Hart
Chambers – Cahill – Jagielka – Gibbs
Walcott – Ramsey – Wilshere – Bale
Ox
Welbeck

donski

sooo… basically two non-english players then. You would remove Welsh and Scottish international teams just to get Gareth Bale and Ramsey to play for “GB”…. I bet if you gave them the option they would turn it down themselves

gunnermite

first time i ve seen arseblog get the spelling of the self proclaim rivals of Arsenal wrong. is your * key not working?

Jasonissimo

A defense of Forster, Baines, Cahill, Jageilka, Gibbs should do well for England. That’s enviable quality, even though the Evertonians have been down in form this season in my casual observation.

Ye ol’ 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1 should do you, with a midfield of Delph, Carrick, Henderson, and Sterling, with Rooney between the lines and the ex-Arsenal man up top (go with form!).

Gooner-Dan

Baines at right back?

Jasonissimo

Ha! Good grief. I guess not? Let’s go with Gibbs at left back and Clyne at right, since he is more likely to get an opportunity there than Baines.

kafka

Let’s talk about one of those called up: Gibbs This season I have spent a lot of time watching him to form a firm opinion, and I think Kieran Gibbs is a very poor player. Absolutely no dribbling ability to take on a man, lack of confidence in making a tight forward pass (and an IMMENSELY FRUSTRATING sideways pass at a bad “let’s start again” angle when he will not make this forward pass), completely useless at crossing the ball, absolutely no composure when there is a rare chance to score (see Monreal vs. de Gea before you tell me… Read more »

Swish

Sadly, the stats disagree with you in many ways there. Seeing as you have directly compared him to Nacho, who is keeping Gibbs out of the team due to Nacho doing very little wrong lately, I have made a comparison matrix between the two for your benefit. We’ll go through your assessment points individually. Before we do, let’s keep in mind that Nacho has nearly 200 minutes on Gibbs, this season so far. 1. “Absolutely no dribbling ability to take on a man” Monreal has successfully taken on a man 6 times throughout the course of the league this season,… Read more »

Hope Danny gets in ahead of Kane. I think this will be the team

Hart
Clyne jagielka Cahill Gibbs
Henderson Delph
Sterling Walcott on wings then Rooney in the no. 10 just behind Danny boy. Oh and Kane on the bench haha

Alex

I really think Mark Noble really deserves a call up to play ahead of some of the midfielders selected..

MegaJulz

Such a shame for the Ox deserves it more than both Townsend and Walcott.

Does anybody else think that looks like a weak Midfield ? Carrick (good at what he does) Sterling (great talent) Henderson (feeding on Gerrards life force) but where is that certified guy ?
Lacking a commanding cb too.

Mr.T

Hehe. Gonna visit Wembley flying right from Danilevicius home.
