Welbeck returns to Arsenal with knee tweak

Danny Welbeck will miss England’s friendly with Italy after picking up a knee injury during his man of the match performance against Lithuania.

The Arsenal striker set up Wayne Rooney for the Three Lions opener and then bagged the second with his head as Roy Hodgson’s men maintained their 100 per cent record in Euro 2016 qualifying.

It’s not thought that Welbeck’s problem is serious, but he – like Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling and City’s James Milner – has been given permission to leave the camp.

“It all went right apart from Welbeck’s injury towards the end of the game which has soured it a bit,” reflected Hodgson at full time.

“We hope it’s not serious, but it’ll probably keep him out of Tuesday, which is a disappointment particularly as we’d already lost Daniel Sturridge (through injury on Monday).

“Welbeck has had a tweak to the knee, when he dived with the goalkeeper. We were planning to take him off anyway. He’s being assessed by the medical staff, but we won’t get a proper idea until Saturday.

“The medical staff gave me the impression they’re not terribly worried about it, but that Tuesday may be too soon. But we’ll see.”

For his part Welbeck was in good spirits after the victory, joking that he was definitely taking the credit for his headed strike.

“I told [Wayne] it was my goal and he was like ‘alright lad’,” revealed Welbeck.

“I’m obviously happy with that but most importantly we’re getting these victories and we’re playing well, so that’s the main thing and we just want to keep this run going.

“It was obviously a good team performance, we got the goals, we didn’t let them into the game and we pressed them high up the pitch as a team. It was a good performance and it was good to get the victory tonight.”

Top scorer in all qualifying teams with 6 goals, great stuff.

Hope the injury clears up fine.

Nacho de Montreal is tasty

What happens to him in front of goal when he plays for Arsenal ?

Seoighe

Perhaps its because there are no repercussions for being profligate at Arsenal

Pedant

Bet Szcz doesn’t agree with you about repurcussions.

roitenak

He scores against his former club and send us through FA cup semi finals.

canizares's targarian locks

He’s scored four league goals all season and had a string of high profile misses in big games.

David C

he doesn’t sound too concerned so that’s great. I missed the match, but am glad to hear Welbeck was man of the match. He can add that to the title he already won this season: Budget Signing of the Year!

sauce

Great! Who’s next?

CB

Ramsey…

David

What a shame. He had such a great game last night.

Gooner Stoner

Welbz is the guy yo!

Andy Mack

When Theo came on it became abundantly clear that he needs game time. If Danny (hopefully) misses their next game then maybe Theo can start.

Rich

The last thing we need is a Theo injury, probably why we’re reluctant to use him, Arsene’s made his mind up, Theo will leave and providing he’s replaced with with Reus or Draxler I couldn’t care less!

Mr. G

Yeah I agree. Walcott is a pretty limited player, and if he has such a high opinion of himself that he thinks he deserves wages on par with Alexis, let him go and replace him with someone better. Barring another injury crisis, he’s of little importance outside of the ‘decent bench weapon’ category anyway.

Thierry Bergkamp

Reus! Theo who?

Andy Mack

Who’d buy Theo on present form?
He needs game time and when he his form he’s well worth keeping (at the right price only!).
I don’t want him starting against Liverpoo in his present form but if he gets a game for England and Dannys knee isn’t sorted for the Liverpoo game then Theo may be a decent option.

Andy Mack

‘he hits form’.

Rich

My Utd mate is such a twat.
It’s been almost 3weeks now… I’ve sent him at least 500 texts and yet he’s still not willing to talk football with me!

Red Cannon

Brilliant!

Kenneth5

It wouldn’t be a normal interllul if an arsenal player doesnt get a knock.

Alexstratz

Dammit Danny, you don’t need to still play at 100% in an international when your team is already winning 3-0. Against Lithuania!

AllGunsABlazin

Danny Welbeck doesn’t have a less than 100% option.

goonslinger

No player should have a less than 100% option

Robbie

Fantastic striker nd very focused….

AntiSpud

We only had to be grateful and thank LVG for being so stupid to let such talent go. I’m sure fawcow has been delivering what he expected.

David C

and think of the price they paid for Falcao! He’s on like 350,000 pounds a week or something. Man U are worse than Chelsea and Citeh with the silly and stupid spending.

Mark

If Welbeck can’t go vs Liverpool I see Ozil going back to the wing with Ramsey and Carzola in the middle. If Welbeck is healthy then Wenger will have a selection choice to make having to leave one of Carzola, Sanchez, Giroud, Welbeck, Ozil or Ramsey out of the lineup.

Anonymous Physicist

I completely agree. I know people don’t like playing Ozil on the wing, but I don’t think we can play our ‘all attack’ midfield with Cazorla and Ozil in the middle against the tougher teams in the league. For me Ramsey has to come in, and I’d rather have Ozil or Cazorla on the wing than out of the team in the form they’ve both been in lately.

santori

We have plenty of cards to play if Theo decides to not renew his membership. There are players from within the rank eager to step up. Campbell, Gnabry and Akpom should be in contention for one spot. Campbell impressed recently against Madrid with his use of the ball and technical level. He needs a strong showing to end of season and who knows? Could do a Coquelin yet at his age. Gnabry is only recently returned from injury, looks a bit heavy and clearly rusty. Has a bit of time on his hand and frankly could benefit from a strong… Read more »

dybala would absolutely tear it up. 10 league goals for palermo is not to sniffed at.

Welbeck was excellent for England.

That said the euphoria surrounding England at times is laughable.

It’s Lithuania.

The media are all over themselves as if the English players are the next Pirlos.

I think Walcott simply needs to find his shooting range again. The same thing happened to Santi on return from injury.

Welbeck will score more for us (and England) if placed centrally. But he can put them in too as demonstrated from the wider area (Bearing in mind this is Lithuania) and it will benefit his all round play when he does get deployed more centrally.

gordy

Now Ramsey after playing really well.

palace gunner

So far welbeck and ramsey have scored for their euro teams gd news also i thought welbeck has 7 goals in six games but gd to see danny rest v italy maybe sturridge , theo or shrek with sterling cane will be a test v italy
Get well welbeck your on form.

bdotm

Danny Welbeck. Plenty of love for u lad. Right attitude always. Just sort out your finishing and you will be unstoppable

David Hillier Handled My Luggage

Fackin injurenationals!

Runkeball

Remember the moaning when Wenger signed him at the last minute at the beginning of the season? How soon his critics went silent. Welbeck, although not the most prolific goal scorer (yet), has been good for us. I had a feeling most of us would warm to him quickly.

CB

I can’t believe you say that.

Balotelli at £16m is clearly the better option, all the papers and pundits told us that.

Mr Nice

Totally, Balotelli at 16 million was bargain of summer transfer window, excluding Falco of course. Wenga has lost it….
