Mesut Ozil says he believes Arsenal have the potential to win the Champions League, provided they get a bit of good luck along the way, and says that despite some poor opening round results, English clubs can be a force in Europe this season.
The German international spoke to the official site ahead of tonight’s game against Olympiacos and stated that previous disappointments in the Champions League have made the Arsenal players more determined to make an impact this season.
“We’re developing ourselves further as a team,” he said. “Defeats always rouse the team more and our aim this season is to go as far as possible, and if possible to win it, because we have the potential.
“We have a very good team with lots of quality. Of course the first game didn’t go well for us but we have a lot of matches in front of us that we want to do well.”
He’s reminded his teammates that in Europe there’s less margin for error than in the domestic league.
“In the Champions League, especially in the knockout rounds, sometimes one goal or the away goals ruling can decide ties, like with us against Monaco, where that was the case.
“We had some bad luck and as a team you need more fortune. I think it will be different this year – the English sides are well equipped and will go far.”
Let’s hope he can get himself on the scoresheet this evening as we look to get our first win of the continental campaign.
Personally I back Chelsea to get knocked out of the competition before Christmas.
no, this is the one competition (and UEFA cup) where I cheer for all English teams. I don’t want any of the English teams to win it other than Arsenal, but right now we are in danger of losing the 4th place team, which would be bad for all. Plus the longer teams stay in it, the harder it is to balance the league.
I don’t mind, because we’re going to finish first every year.
It’s only the likes of Liverpool that will lose out, and quite frankly, I can deal with that. 🙂
Personally I back Arsenal to get knocked out of the Champions League by November mate.
The only reason I would want Chelsea to go to the knock-out would be for those schmucks to think they can qualify for the CL trying to win it.
That thought alone would be a fun ride in the PL and the CL.
So long may Chelsea progress and falter.
As for the rest of the top 4/challenger hopefuls, progress guarantees fatigue and focus diversion, which would aid Arsenal domestically this season. So I am with the ASSIST MASTER here 🙂
Mourinho is a fucking cunt.
Lets change the narrative to “mentally unstable”. Has more bite.
Seeing that England is on the verge of losing the 4th CL spot based on UEFA coefficient, I am backing all English teams to advance as far into this years competition as possible.
Off topic but my goodness isn’t Stevie a right old prick!!
Ozil says that Arsenal can win the Champions League, but I doubt anyone in the club truly believes in this outcome. To be Champions League winners, you have to be a possession based team with a great ability to manage the game. Counter attacking teams or teams who look to stretch play (us) do not make that far. If Arsenal reach the semi final that would be a major achievement. 7 years of mostly Barca and Bayern in the finals have taught me that.
I would really like to see us reach the quarter final and beyond. Ozil has been excellent this season and I’m glad he trusts his teammates so much.
Tottenham are Gash though
Ozil forgot to take his pills I guess.
English clubs are not good enough for the Champions League this year. Especially Arsenal unfortunately.
