BFG: We lack killer instinct

Per Mertesacker concedes that Arsenal’s collective inability to hit the arse of a cow with a composite chordophone is proving troublesome in their quest to win football matches.

The Gunners have managed only two wins out of their last eight home games, scoring just six goals from 147 shots; a miserable ratio of one goal per 25 efforts. In contrast, during the same run of games, opponents have found the net with an efficiency nearly three times that of Arsene Wenger’s men. (stats via @orbinho)

It’s a problem. A whopping great problem that we’re paying for dearly on a weekly basis.

Admitting his teammates need to work on their composure in front of goal the German international did his best to sound an optimistic note ahead of daunting trips to Barcelona and Everton in the coming days.

“What we do lack at the moment is we need to score at some point. It looks like we play, and play and play until the opposing team scores,” said Mertesacker after yesterday’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Watford.

“That is something we need to work on. We had the opportunities and the possibilities when they were 2-0 up to come back and we kept going.

“You have to give credit because we kept going and created chance after chance, but at the moment we lack that killer instinct. We need to work on that if we want to be successful in the Premier League and the Champions League.

“In the box we played and always found good positions, with the man in the right position but we lacked that relaxation, even to hit the target we did not do that sometimes. We missed it too often.

“The desire to play together and to be good at a team is there, you can feel that, even if there is a bit of negativity I can understand. I want as well that we go through here, I think we had the chances and we played in the right way apart from the fact we didn’t score.

“It’s something you need to do in football if you want to be successful. It looks like the longer the game goes, we rush and rush our decisions. It is still a learning process for us as a team.”

Arsenal need to score at least twice at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night if they’re to have any chance of progressing to the next round of the Champions League. Given Luis Enrique’s side have won 18 and drawn two of their 20 matches in 2016 it’s going to be a tall order.

“The season is not over,” added Mertesacker, attempting to put a positive spin on the challenge ahead.

“We play in a confident way, we maybe lack that bit at the end. What is really important in football, to be successful we need to score. We cannot afford to concede [against Barcelona]. We have to go there and try to attack, no matter what. That is the only possibility we have.

“We can be fortunate to have such a big game in front of us. I cannot predict, it is really hard. It is the ultimate team at the minute, so we are straight away under pressure and we have to go away from home.”

He’s not wrong.
If we actually took our clear cut chances, those brain fart moments by our defenders won’t be as punished as much.
Saying that, we hardly created many clear cuts yesterday either…(Welbeck’s sitter aside!)

Player says sorry. Didn’t we read this earlier?

Arseblog-mania

“When you see Arsenal playing against big teams, they look like a small team. They don’t look like winning a title soon.

“We knew once we had the ball we’d be able to pass it around since Arsenal gives you too much space. They are not strong defensively.”

drogheda gunner

I’m a big fan of Wenger and what he has done in the past but his methods are outdated and it just feels like the players don’t care ,there’s no fergie giving them the hairdryer at halftime or after the match.us fans are the ones suffering ,I’m sick of being in a bad mood at the weekend watching that shit ,he just has to leave.

Nigel

What you know about methods and tactics? What are the new methods that AW did not apply?

ramgooner

Majority of Arsenal players lack work-rate and defensive discipline and that is down to Arsene. Talent has never been a question with this squad. When you see the likes of Alexis, Campbell and Welbeck run it makes you think what is the point of Theo Walcott, Chamberlain and Ramsey? Im fine with losing and all that but i can’t accept the sort of work rate players like Theo Walcott put in when they come on. The norm should be…. ..however talented a player maybe if he doesn’t put in the required work-rate he should get out of Arsenal. It’s fine… Read more »

tbh we could have done with the OX yesterday he couldnt have done any worse than walcott coming on, he could atleast beat a man and be more direct than campbell as another option

Mark

It’s pretty sad that in the middle of March we are realistically only playing for top 3 or 4 being knocked out of two competitions, days away from being knocked out of the CL and having seen our once promising position a couple of months ago at the top of the table in the league crumble to barely hanging onto a top 4 spot today. Hopefully the players will finally show some pride and get things in order and make a run so we can at least finish ahead of Tottenham. The one positive I can see out of this… Read more »

Perry S.

this is a very well thought, non-hasty comment. cheers to you for not simply jumping on the wenger out bandwagon and actually looking at a solution. people don’t understand he’s not going anywhere, he will assuredly see out his final year. let’s just hope as you said this season gives him the onus to make things right one last time before he departs.

spinner

I’m not being hasty either, I’ve given this some thought:
Wenger out!

Knaus

Has he ever (last 10+years at least) brought in the right type or even the right amount of players? I remember the year we signed chamakh and squillaci, I thought we finally strengthened in the right areas. Then I saw them in action…
I’ve given up the hope that Wenger will sign the “right” players a long time ago

jimbo1

We need a decent striker. End of.

Finsbury Park Gooner

We have a decent striker. We need a great one.

loose_cannon

No, that’s not the end of it at all. I think we need a centre back too and possibly a centre mid and right winger

midgunner

Totally agree. Per is right in blaming the finishing, but that’s far from the only issue. He needs to look closer to home. We’re defending like utter cunts. Look again at that second goal we conceded on Sunday. Look at Merts body language as he turns his back on the shot. I’m not saying he could have blocked it, but a Watford player would have broken his balls to try and block it. Elneny was no better, he saw their striker and couldn’t be arsed to close him down. The problems are much deeper than bad finishing. Can’t recall an… Read more »

chippy's chip

Errr and a couple of decent defenders and we are sorted. Ok wenger sort it!

spinner

There is no value in the market at the moment.

I will only buy players who are top top quality.

There are no players available that can improve our squad.

We have to accept that everyone can have an opinion. How many days have you managed a football club?

We are disappointed that we have lost 3 games st home on a row but it is important that we respond in the next game.

The spirit of the players is good, I can’t fault their effort.

It’s a farce!

Flashmob

“…It’s pretty sad that in the middle of March we are realistically only playing for top 3 or 4 …”

There are a lot of similar opinions to that but I think it’s tremulous/desperate opinion!

More than 20% of the season are ahead of us.
Spurs only 3 points ahead and they have definitely harder games than us.
Not to mention Leicester (just take a look at their shedule)
Our spine of the squad are healthy (and Wilshere, Santi are coming back)

This season is far from over!

spinner

Optimism is good thing but don’t make yourself look deluded. Last time I checked the table, Spuds were 6 points ahead (we have a game in hand). Who says their run in is harder than us? We have to go to Everton, West Ham and Man City – all tough away games. To catch Leicester, we need to win all of our remaining 9 games and we need Leicester to lose 3 out of 9. This doesn’t look likely given that Leicester have only lost 3 league games all season, and we have won 2 out of last 9 league… Read more »

Flashmob

It’s not optimism – it’s objectivity

If we have a game in hand than 6 points are not 6 points – in this case: It is more objective to count the points lost.

Spurs will face Liverpool(A), Chelsea(A) both are fighting for EL or CL and Man.Utd(H) while the games you have mentioned – are our hardest 3 (and Everton basically have no reachable target in the league)

We don’t necessarily need Leicester to loose 3. (2 defeats and 1 draw can be enough) Not to mention they will face Chelsea(A), Man.Utd(A), Everton(H), WestHam(H)

spinner

You’ve not responded to the point about us needing to win 9 in a row?

Wait, next you’ll be telling me we’ll stuff Barca 3-0 on Wednesday.

Flashmob

Which of those 9 opponents do you think has a better squad than our?
(By the way – we were talking about PL)

spinner

Your argument is acutely flawed, allow me to demonstrate:
I don’t think Swansea and Watford have a better squad than us, they still beat us in our last 2 home games.

We have won 2 in last 9 PL games but for some reason you believe we can win next 9 out of 9. Delusion, my friend.

I was cheering on Leicester tonight. I hope they win the league as the alternative option is a thought that makes me feel physically sick.

Flashmob

Well… I disagree. Before our disastrous run (that you’ve mentioned) we lost only 2 out of 14 games. If I would have stated then, that we will win only 2 out of our next 9 games I think I would have get a warning: “Hidden due to low comment rating”. But in reality: it has happened. Bayern was unbeatable before they arrived to London last year. Had it determined the future? No it hadn’t. We haven’t won anything for 9 years – and it was 2-0 to Hull after 20 minutes. Had it determined the future? No it hadn’t. I’m… Read more »

spinner

So now you are saying its optimism whereas your earlier post said it wasn’t optimism but objectivity. You seem very confused fella.

Also, you’re now saying you don’t think we will win our next 9 games. Well if we don’t do that then we need Leicester to fuck up at least half of their remaining 8 games.

Go to bed son, I think your brain needs some rest.

Flashmob

I didn’t say we will or we will not… You’ve missed the point.
The point is: That is not true that realistically we are playing for top 3 or 4.
I’ve mentioned the remaining fixtures of the top 2; I’ve asked about which clubs do you think have stronger squads, and I’ve told you why it is misleading to judge based almost entirely on recent performance.
You can say that “I need a rest” but on the other side: There are my questions that need a logical disagreement…

son 🙂

Rectum_Spectrum

Leicester and spurs have stronger squads because 11 average pros playing their hearts out for each other is much more effective than 11 pros who look like they just met for the first time in the tunnel before kick off.

Ndubya5

Weird… Pretty sure you posted this last night.

Bosscielny

Oh just shut up, will you!

We don’t have enough goalscorers in our team. Our so called “world class” strikers in Theo, ox, Sanchez etc haven’t even hit double figures in terms of goals.

We’ve constantly struggled to put our chances away. If only we could’ve foreseen the lack of goals in the summer. Oh wait…

Gargoyle

It’s weird that you only mention strikers. Our midfield is crap, our defense is crap, we play terrible football, we barely create chances and those we create, we don’t take. And these players are not crap. Ramsey is not crap, Ozil is not crap, Alexis is not crap, Chambo is not crap, Gabriel is not crap, Bellerin is not crap, Monreal is not crap, Koscielny is not crap, etc. You get my point. BVB sacked klopp?

spinner

No, he realised that he had done as much as he could do so he resigned.
Take note Arsene.

Gargoyle

Poor choice of words. Again, whether they sacked him or he left, the end result was the same. They lost a very very good manager, who struggled to get the best out of his team, and then went on to have a great season. No reason why that can’t happen at Arsenal.

GoonerFromTheThirdWorld

Also, we hardly ever try to go at it from a distance, which is ridiculous.

We need to work on the long shots, instead we try a build up where we can take a sure shot and end up losing the ball or just fucking up.

Also, players need to be fucking motivated, they look like a hopeluss bunch tbh, no leaders in the squad at all ATM.

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

gooner

May be that’s because we don’t have a good enough striker other than Welbeck.

kafka

Welbeck is not a good enough striker. His whole career so far calls bullshit on your statement.

Perry S.

I agree. he’s good but not starting quality great, else he wouldn’t be missing sitters that are harder to miss than make. my 4 month old could have tapped that fooking ball in yesterday!

gooner

I didn’t say world class. He is the best option we have as a striker. Atleast he is scoring some important goals. Imagine our league position without him.

kafka

Just shut up man, “have to give credit,” played in the right way, etc etc. I understand he had to give an interview, but I also notice that Per Mertesacker is an excellent man at giving seemingly honest answers. He will make an able deputy to Wenger wherever they go spin the PR next. Sort out your own game. Weak at Tottenham, weak at Watford (good interceptions in the first half though, must admit). loose_cannon

Actually agree with you. I’m a little shocked that we’re all focusing on our attack when if that was the only problem, we’d be drawing all our games. Instead we’re losing and to dreadful mistakes too. Per has some cheek talking about our attack, he’s been rubbish alongside Gabriel. How Arseblog hasn’t seen this I’ll never know…

CLEgooner

Massive penis? Have you heard something?

His ‘attempt’ to block Watford’s 2nd goal was pathetic, when you see your captain do that, you know there’s no commitment in the team.

DanP

Same old crap, we’re very good at giving anodyne meaningless bullshit after the event

I like Per, but please just shut the fuck up and do your talking on the pitch.

He is like the rest of this weak minded squad – one good game in 10 followed by 5 error strewn, lifeless, half asleep headless chicken episodes, and capable of so much more

All comes back to preparation, coaching and squad management, and AW just has to go as he fails on all counts

Jimdinho

“We cannot afford to concede [against Barcelona]. We have to go there and try to attack, no matter what. That is the only possibility we have…”

What could possibly go wrong.

AntiSpud

Japan did that against US in 1945. They ended up with Atonic bomb. At least the war ended early. Yes we can go kamikaze style. What do we have to lose?

btw

Is that a Gin Atonic bomb?

Trezy

No per, not “at the moment” we’ve been lacking it for years now.
I have been saying it for a while here that the difference between us and the traditional big teams is the lack of killer instinct. That’s why fergie was able to win the title in his last season with an average manure side.
I find it shocking he’s only realizing it now. You can’t have Giroud, Welbeck and Theo and expect to possess killer instinct.

Crash Fistfight

You contradict yourself here slightly. If Fergie was able to win the title with average players why should the fact that we don’t have “world class” players mean we have no killer instinct.

I think the more important part of that statement is that Fergie was able to get more out of players than the sum of their parts. At the moment, Arsene is getting considerably less from our players than the sum of their parts.

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

Plus, Fergie does not blame unhappy fans after four wins in 14 games. What is the message sent to the players? Lot of coaches add extra training sessions to send them a message. Theo needs to be sent to youth team for one month to get the message not be sure to get involved every game as a sub.

Trezy

Not really, manure had a shitty midfield, but they also had the right mentality and a WC striker in RVP plus clinical strikers like rooney and chicarito. Wenger just hasban unbalanced squad.

Mystified Reader

Sorry, but Fergie had World Class players: Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand just to name a few. When you add in Christiano Ronaldo, Cantona etc. That shows that statement is a load of rubbish.

I think there is something not quite right and it may be down to the blend.

No.8

Completely off subject here but I just wanted to say something. A lot of understandable anger among the fans at the moment. A lot of it is even aimed at each other. Some feel they have to stickup for Arsene and others have given up hope with him. Some feel the need to have a go at those who do not shout and sing all game. But it is a fact that this happened at Highbury too and also happens at other football grounds. Not everyone wants to sing all the game and I don’t see there being a problem… Read more »

Actually, more likely that Barca go 1-0 then we bring it to 1-2 knowing that a single goal will send us through, Bendtner will go through on goal only to make a heavy touch and let the chance slip away. Wait, did I say Bendtner?

Stillmatic

“What is exciting in watching a game where you are always guaranteed the win.”

Could we at at least try it for half a season as a trial period so as to know what it feels like?
I imagine those Barca fans must be sick to death of seeing the likes of Messi, Suarez and Neymar scoring wonder goal after wonder goal every game.

Poor sods. They really should experience the sweet experience of snatching defeat out of the mouth of victory, the arsenal way.

vnjvnjv

I love the way that whenever things go wrong there’s so many on here that just deflect away by complaining about the fans. People seem to forget that the home fans are only at half of our league matches. It’s not like we’ve been great away from home and shit at home. How can the unbeaten season be tarnished by fans’ behaviour? The way you write about our fans you’d have thought bricks are being thrown at the players’ cars at the training ground. There’s barely any booing or jeering either. During the Watford game there was barely any moaning… Read more »

Meaningless comments. You can’t expect him to say much else (he has a responsibility to retain a semblance of balance and optimism after all) but it doesn’t make hearing it any less aggravating. Our season is, excluding biblical level miracles, over. They are doing their best to avoid saying that and it this point thats got to be more then trying to convince themselves for their own sakes than it is trying to convince anyone else.

George Gunner

At one time the excuse was Arsenal lack a top class goalie. Since Cech was signed the lack of a killer instinct has been raised.
Can you remember the games against Hull and Blacburn? The gunners lost both games being not clinical enough.
The buck stops with Wenger and frankly he shd leave asap.

Alexstratz

Poor BFG, having to come out whenever we lose (which means every two matches these days), and say some obvious crap like “you need to score to win in a football match”. The captain’s armband seems to be the whipping boy’s armband. Maybe that’s why Theo gets the armband, in the absence of other captains, even if he plays poorly.

It’s not the players. It’s not the strikers, it’s not giroud, it’s not Sanchez it’s not even Walcott. I have been extremely pro Wenger but recently I have seen the handbrake. It is wengers risk aversion. We dominate games in terms of possession. We sit and compact the game in the final third. This is killing us. What is Walcott going to do with no space to attack? What is giroud going to do with no crosses. We have no space . Ozil, Sanchez etc have impossible angles to pass in with no room for mistake. They need to judge… Read more »

What I think this squad lacks is ambition. Often they are saying they are playing okay and just having bad luck and so on. If you would have shown these results to anyone in the beginning of the season they would have deemed them a failure. Would the players of real, barcelona, bayern, dortmund be telling this kind of things to the media? Wenger's Zip

When you look at the way the Premier League is these days. Our vintage team of Henry, Pires, Ljungberg, Vieira et al would be well suited. Pace and power. Wenger brought that to the league but seems reluctant to entertain that style of play any more. Gone are the days the ball would go from our box to the oppositions in a matter of 20 seconds.

Now don’t misunderstand me. I appreciate we had a very talented squad then, but the fact remains that that styled of play will not be entertained by Wenger any-more. I wonder why, Ideas?

To be fair they’ve made a lot of very good signings. Ozil, Sanchez, Monreal, Kos, Bellerin, Cech, Santa, Elneny looks promising, I can’t be bothered listing them all … You only need to look at united or spurs a few seasons ago to see what happens when you get it really wrong … Seems to me a lot of the negativity going around stems more from what has happened over the last ten years than the last ten months. Its so embarassing when opposition fans predict in the middle of the season that Arsenal will bottle it and fall away. They know this team so well. Better than some of the actual fans. I recall reading Utd fans confidently dismissing Arsenal because they were 100% confident this team didn’t have the balls to get there, despite having a talented squad. And they were 100% right. No bottle.

My friends and I discussed the “Fabregas” issue at length lately. I don’t think Arsene ever recovered from that. First of all, Leicester did not spend more than 17m for their entire squad. There are NO world class players. Spurs spent less than us last summer. They are outscoring us.
