Sunderland o_0 Arsenal: Bore the Numbers

1 – Dive by Defoe given as a foul
1 – Dive by Elneny given as a foul
1 – Law of the game which explains handball: (emphasis mine)

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with
the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into
consideration
• the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
• the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an
infringement

• touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.)
counts as an infringement
• hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) counts as an
infringement

1 – Law of the game which is possibly the easiest law of the game to understand yet which is the most misunderstood law of the game in all the laws

40 – Touches by Giroud*
32 – Passes attempted
15 – Passes failed
6 – Failed passes in the middle third
5 – failed passes in the final third
4 – failed passes in the Sunderland box
3 – failed touches
3 – offsides
2 – shots
2 – shots in and around the six yard box
0 – shots on target
4 – Chances created
3 – Chances created in the Sunderland box
9 – Chances created in the Sunderland box by all of Arsenal

5 – Shots by Alexis
4 – Shots by Alexis from distance
2 – Shots on target by Alexis
2 – Shots on target by Alexis from distance
1 – Shot by Alexis in the 6 yard box, blocked

4 – Shots by Iwobi
1 – Shot on target by Iwobi, which was in the six yard box, and saved by Mannone
1 – Shot by Iwobi which was wide open, almost in the prime area, and sliced out for a throw in

0 – Big chances created by either team
4 – Shots in the Sunderland 6 yard box, 2 on target
1 – This is the reason Mannone was picked as MOTM by some
51 – Shots Arsenal have created in the opposition 6 yard box this season (most in the League)
15 – Goals Arsenal have scored in the opposition 6 yard box this season (most in the League)
30 – Percent of shots in the 6 yard box that Arsenal are converting this season
30 – Percent of shots in the 6 yard box that all teams in the Premier League are converting this season
47 – Percent of shots in the 6 yard box that Man U are converting (best in the League)
20 – Percent that Norwich are converting (lowest in the League)
9 – Additional goals Arsenal would have scored if they converted 6 yard shots at Man U’s rate
5 – Fewer goals Arsenal would have scored if they were converting at Norwich’s rate

3 – Things I need in life: a bath, some yogurt, and a place to go doody!

Elneny and Ramsey:

Elneny
82/87 passing (2nd on Arsenal behind Ramsey)
24/25 passing in final 1/3
1 shot created
2 shots taken (both outside the box, none on target)
2/2 dribbles

29/35 passing in final 1/3 (led Arsenal)
2 shots created (both Ramsey and Elneny’s key passes led to shots outside the box)
2 shots taken (both outside the box, none on target)
0 dribbles
8 ball recoveries (third on Arsenal)
0/2 tackles
3 interceptions (2nd on Arsenal behind Koscielny’s 6)
3/3 clearances
1 foul committed
0 fouls suffered

1.28 – Points per game by Arsenal v. top 10 teams last year
1.29 – Points per game by Arsenal v. top 10 teams this year
2.60 – Points per game by Arsenal v. bottom 10 teams last year (best in the League)
2.33 – Points per game by Arsenal v. bottom 10 teams this year (4th best)
0 – Losses v. bottom 10 teams last year
2 – Losses v. bottom 10 teams this year
1 – Losses v. bottom 10 teams in 2013/14 (Arsenal were flat track bullies that year and earned 2.65 ppg against bottom 10, that led the League, of course)

*My point here is that even if Giroud seemed frustrating, he was still the 2nd most creative player on the pitch and created the three best chances of the game

Ramsey was useless today, he thinks he is Iniesta (coincidentally in his all time Xi) when he is just a Walcott moved to midfield he was incomparable to a footballer today. He couldn’t even pass. Wilshere came on and made one turn.. ONE and I genuinely think it wasmore than Ramsey had done the 80minutes he was on.. Also Ozil can’t be bothered to take a proper corner or at all. I didn’t see him come deep to take possession not once, maybe fatigued but still not, a good showing. Giroud when not scoring he is firmly playing for the… Read more »

H2k

Ramsey has set the bar high. He has had seasons where he has scored lots of goals, and has scored screamers like he did against Galatasaray. The issue we all had then with him however was that he did not back track enough and exposed our defence to the counter attack. While Ramsey didn’t have any wow moments, today you laying into him and saying “He couldn’t even pass” is just disagreeing with the stats laid out in the post. Today he was doing was the fans wanted (of previous seasons), to keep the ball ticking, and to do his… Read more »

Stringer Bell

He scored lots of goals in one season not seasons and in quite a few of those game he was exceptional and everything he tried came off, in others he was hopeless like he has been most of the last two seasons but popped up with a goal in last minute and the myth was born. It’s comes through clearly in your comment

Fabulous

Very well said H2K, our defensive balance is essentially non-existent and Ramsey did try to keep shape today as you mentioned, a number of times he was making clearances in the box I had him mistaken for Koscielny. I honestly think Ramsey would thrive better as a number 10, or if Wenger were to revert to a 4-3-3 with 3 CM’s at the midfield base. Having said so it’s bloody frustrating Wenger never does so and seem incapable to tweak his system to get the best out of his players. It’s the same thing week in and out, and the… Read more »

Something seems off in Ramsey’s #’s. He missed 6 passes in the final 1/3rd, but only missed 3 passes in total?

Crash Fistfight

He made three passes that successfully reached two targets.

Cheeto Slick

Ramsey was in a holding role with Elneny. Sunderland did not score, so he did part of his job. Seriously, go back and look how many forward runs he made. He made more runs in sub appearances at the beginning of the season than he did this whole game. Very disciplined for him.

Armchair Expert

This game was just set up to be this kind of a frustrating draw wasn’t it? You just knew it was going to be like this (remember the 0-0 draw last season?).

Expect more of the same next week against Norwich since they are also fighting to avoid relegation.

Stringer Bell

it might be worth giving up the numbers if they make it appear Ramsey played well. He was awful today from start to finish.

Boilermaker Gunner

That’s the beauty of numbers.they paint a story which one might not capture at first glance. I felt giroud was pathetic but he did create chances.

Stringer Bell

I think I will trust my eyes. Ramsey and Giroud were shite but thanks for attempting to polish a turd

andr

Everybody was poor. Why just pick on Ramsey?

Stringer Bell

Because the stats are making it look like he was our best player. It ain’t rocket science

Heroldg

Because going by the stats he saw the ball more than anyone but did nothing noteworthy with it. It’s painful to watch how we play and Ramsey for me is right at the centre of it.

Cheeto Slick

I agree. Ramsey has been forced to play disciplined and hold back rather than race forward and make something happen. He’s in a holding role with Elneny. Sunderland did not score, so he did part of his job. Seriously, go back and look how many forward runs he made. He made more runs in sub appearances at the beginning of the season than he did this whole game.

BenGman

You’re right. Ramsey was passing 2yards to the back 4 and to Elneny. No ambitious and no movement up to to force the issue. It is so shit when Campbell and Welbeck add a bit of desire to the team and they have to sit it out.

Timorous Me

I also thought Coquelin was missed today for that same reason. Not only for his tenacity, which would have been helpful, but he does often attempt to bomb guys down the wings with his big, lofting passes, or some more incisive forward passing. And his work clogging up the midfield for the opposition sometimes can lead to chances going back the other way which are harder for the opposition to defend if they’re already in the process of trying to get forward. One good game for Ramsey with Elneny shouldn’t have meant another game with Coquelin on the bench. I’d… Read more »

Yes, but...

Giroud may very well have been the second most creative player on the pitch but, fundamentally, his job is to score goals.
That he has failed to score for months in the Premier League is at the heart of why he is getting up people’s noses.
It’s great if, for example, a goalkeeper creates two chances every game with his kicks upfield, but if he is not saving shots, he is not serving his primary purposes.
So Giroud being creative is a nice bonus, but it’s the goals we want.

Dawn

Who says his job is to score goals? If he stood in the box all game long waiting for ball to feet, a la shearer, I’d agree! If he took all the the free kicks, and penalties, I’d agree! He defends, he creates, he holds up the ball! His job is to be a TEAM PLAYER and you goons need to realise and appreciate it!

Gooneron

But for a big guy he falls over way too easily…

voldermort

And still he gets no goals, so you tell us. What’s the answer then ?

Stringer Bell

Er the manager when he signed him as a centre forward. That’s what centre forwards are bought to do.

Deano

Dawn his JOB is to score GOALS.

Heroldg

10/10 smiles in training make you think they’re racing away with the league.

Liam

Can you expand on what a failed touch is? (Giroud)

Jesus Biscuit

A first touch that failed to control the ball.

Greh Greysh

The crux of it is, the team don’t care about the remainder of the season. Finishing third is not a great achievement and I get why it’s difficult to motivate yourself for it. Sincerely I believe Wenger is unable to push this team any further. At least we didn’t lose though right…And showed great mental strength against a team fighting for their lives…

Gooneron

Arsenal the gift that just keeps giving

A Yank

Since when is a box of shit a gift?

Arun

Only until the box is left unopened!

Wellarsed

The team has lost belief and confidence. At this rate fourth is looking increasingly unlikely. Wenger really needs to do some coaching if we aren’t to witness a complete collapse.

MyNameIsDifficultToPronounce

Fourth is not unlikely at all. Yes, we’re dogshit. But does anyone actually think we won’t get fourth? People say this every year and yet every year we get there. We certainly will. Doesn’t mean we’re not shit. We’re terrible.

Overmars

Not every year Leicester and Spurs are challenging for the title. So you’re wrong.

Wellarsed

Also, what does Campbell have to do to start?! It’s beyond bizarre at this point.

Greh Greysh

Totally agree. If he leaves in the summer it will be a big loss.

Jimdinho

Only if he is kept at walcotts expense or he isnt replaced with better. Campbell is ok but we need much better if we want to challenge.

Jesus Biscuit

You seem to forget the fact that we need a full squad. Whilst we might want someone better to be a starter, he’s an excellent player to have in our squad and is more than capable of starting games. Certainly ahead of that cretinous Walcott.

Deano

Doubt it is a case of if but more a case of when. The lad must be seething being overlooked all the time for Theo.

gordy

When he came on against West Brom he immediately looked good, miles better than poor child Theo

Gooner Husker

Has anyone ever bought a Jersey with a player’s name and number on it and then that player turns to sh*t?

I think it’s my fault. I’m sorry to all my fellow Gooners.

I have a Walcott shirt back when he was #34. I have a Wilshire #19 and #10. Not that Jack’s bad, I just cursed him. Good lord, I even have a Nasri shirt.

My wife loves Giroud. I bought myself a jersey and wear it during sex so she can fantasize. He’s gone to hell.

spinner

Do you call them ‘jerseys’ in the USA?

We call them football shirts over here in North London.

Beezus Fuffoon

What are you getting at?

Third Plebeian

Do you call it football in the UK?

We call it soccer over here in the USA.

Anyone else up for the captain obvious game?

Corona X

You’re not alone buddy! I’ve got a shirt with Watt, 54 on it…

Third Plebeian

That’s a really strange decision. What exactly did Sanchez Watt do to prompt it?

Corona X

It was a gift from my brother, who has this weird thing about putting the name of an exciting youngster on his shirt, with his “youngster” shirt number on it, so you’ll have a really unique shirt.

Watt looked like he was going to become a beast at the time, so I picked him.

Still wear the shirt for every few games, it always becomes a good talking point 😉

Jasonissimo

Do the conversations always start with a question about your sanity? 🙂 (Watt a beast? Srsly?!?)

Jack4343

I’d like to add a new stat…

24 – times I yelled Ah, fuck! at the TV.

Trex d Gunner

So Arsene, since you can’t blame the atmosphere inside the Emirates today, what went wrong with your top top quality players?

spinner

Here’s a stat from the BBC website:

◾Mesut Ozil has created 137 goal-scoring chances for team-mates this season in the top flight, more than any other player in a single Premier League campaign since 2003-04

If only we had bought that striker in the summer. Never mind, when you have stubborn and arrogant manager like Wenger, why would you expect him to listen to anyone else.

Vonnie

Arsenal recently bought a stats company, maybe that’s why they keep playing Ramsey and Giroud, because stats like these make them look good, until you actually look and see they’re not.

Crapaud

Totally agree with you that just judging a players contribution based on stats can be misleading – point is ably addressed in the Clint Eastwood film where he was a football scout (Trouble with the Curve 2012)

Jasonissimo

Baseball.

Carlos

There’s no one on the club who can finish, apart from Alexis who spent most of the year off form. Amazing Arsene can’t see it.

Thoughtful Goon

Ramsey is the teams lightning rod for better or for worse because Arsenal’s style of play requires a tactically astute and technically gifted player. Unfortunately Ramsey isn’t this and while I have berated him and others before I must get my head out my arse and speak football and not fan speak. All the players have not just turned into utter rubbish over night although are suffering a malaise others a slow rotting. When we look at Leicester City, Spurs and even last seasons Chelsea you have to saw we are very comparable them in terms of player quality. Lest… Read more »

Gooners & Roses

1 – Only 1 manager in this world would pick Theo over Campbell and stick with the same decisions most game.

CechMate

We’re playing a lot like Man U – clueless possession football. Our counterattacks are too slow and while in possession we’re making too many lateral passes in our own half without drawing the opposition forward for a sucker punch. I remember our beautiful game where our wingers used to do a one-two (not laterally like we do now) in the opposition box and wingers drive till the touchline and pull it back with 2-3 guys waiting for it and feel saddened that we do not have such skilled players now. Ramsey takes too many touches to pass or does a… Read more »

“*My point here is that even if Giroud seemed frustrating, he was still the 2nd most creative player on the pitch and created the three best chances of the game” This is where stats fail. As a central striker he is, of course, more likely than any other player on the pitch to be in this position, behind the actual creative midfielder. For instance, if it were Koscielny that was up there, it would be a very important and interesting statistic. Likewise, if Giroud lead the team in defensive stats it would be important and worth analysing. However, it isn’t… Read more »

Wenger needs to leave at the end of the season!!! Yeah we might struggle whilst the new manager settles in, but we will struggle next season with Wenger in charge anyway!!! At least with a new manager there will be hope instead of dread!!!!

Diaby's Glasslegs

All those comments and no one saw Theo skipping past THAT leg or was it the ball? What on earth happened to scoring goals and not growing a beard?? Theo?? Giroud too?? Now i think Match Fixing has come to our league. Theo to China
