Per Mertesacker will miss Arsenal’s last two games of the season after picking up a hamstring injury against Norwich last weekend.
The BFG was replaced 5 minutes into the second half by Gabriel and won’t play again until the new campaign.
Speaking to the official site, Arsene Wenger provided a team update ahead of the trip to Man City on Sunday.
“From the squad that played against Norwich last Saturday, we have lost Per Mertesacker,” he said.
“Per is out for the remaining two matches with a hamstring injury. Everyone else from last week’s squad is fit and available for selection.”
Santi Cazorla has already expressed his desire to play against City, while Jack Wilshere could be in contention for a place in the team as he ramps up his comeback.
A win for Arsenal on Sunday would guarantee at least third place in the Premier League.
Out for the season? Sounds long term but we are talking about two weeks here.
Given our track record, the headline might well mean next season.
It took me a second to process it too lol
Bit gutted for him really. He gets a lot of stick for being slow, but I do rate him, I think he is a decent defender with a fair bit of tactical nous and he is by far the best paring with Kos. Will he stick around next season, or will he be moved on? I don’t know, but I think he has done well in an Arsenal shirt, probably scored one of the most important goals in Arsene Wengers reign at the club, when he scored the equaliser in that cup semi final against Wigan; if he didn’t score… Read more »
I think it is very unlikely he’ll be sold given Wenger’s tendency to keep older and increasingly injury-prone players when more ambitious managers would replace them. If he is sold in this window, however, it will certainly be at a financial loss. This window we’re looking at: Leaving on frees: Arteta, Flam, Rosicky, plus probably several youngish players like Wellington who’ve not made the grade. Leaving at market value (hopefully): Ospina. Possibly leaving, probably at a loss (esp when you consider their wages): Walcott, Ox, Giroud. Possibly leaving at a profit: Gibbs (since he cost nothing), Sanchez (if he gets… Read more »
I get that he’s out for the season but Terry is a thundercunt and that’s that.
BFG out for justice…hmmm..sounds better.
Fuck me… An article with four comments so far, and none of them are a pointless, tedious, futile, In or Out argument.
Arsene’s Zip Out!
Wenger out!
Get well soon, BFG. We need that experience in the team.
If we secure 3rd place this weekend I’d like to see Calum Chambers get a game at centre back against Villa.
I think the under 21 run out Calum was to prepare for Per’s absence. Gabriel seems to have an erratic side to his game and occasional lapse in concentration (which should improve if Kos is anything to go by). I wouldn’t mid Calum lining up alongside Kos. He’s been decent when called upon.
We don’t need to win at the weekend but we really need a draw. The last thing we need is another two games at the beginning of the season after the copa and the euros.
We need a win. And we need second place. Totteringham day is as important as football in North London itself, is it not?
Didn’t Wenger say when jack got back that it was the first time this season the whole squad was fit and in training.
How long did that last, a week?!
The Golden Week. Sadly never aligned with any particular week of importance. Well done lads.
Oh so no difference to the team then…
Chuck Santi in at centre half
Don’t think he would have played anyway. Gabriel needs to fit in. Also worried about Chambers’ lack of playing time. He needs to develop.
‘We lost Per Mertesaker’ lol
