It’s not every day we stumble across a 16-minute video interview with Arsene Wenger, let alone one that appears to have mostly flown under the radar.
Here’s the boss undertaking an interview with IWC Watches that appears to have originally been posted five months ago.
Yes, he’s initially a little too gushing about the Swiss horologists (it’s obviously a sponsored gig), but once you get past that there’s some really juicy stuff about life as a manager.
We particularly enjoyed his answer when asked about his personal highlight since joining Arsenal in 1996…
“When people speak about highlights they always speak only about trophies.
“It’s true that the trophies you win are highlights, but what you keep from your career is more the human things…more that sense that you could influence people’s life in a positive way, you could help careers to take off.
“Moments where that sense of unity was real and not fake. That we were all onboard to fight together, we’re all on a high together. These moments are of course linked with trophies, but not only that.
“You remember more the human experience, the moments where your team played fantastically well.
“Sometimes it’s only five minutes in a game. But you strive for perfection and when you reach these moments they stay in your memory forever and you think it’s worth to do it. And let’s do it again.”

Arsene Wenger is a man that divides your opinion. On one hand, you love him because of his class, attitude, knowledge and intelligence. On the other hand, he can infuriate you. Love him or hate him, he is a man that should be respected.

You know, for all the criticism and anger that he gets, and sure, he has his faults, the more of him I see “behind the scenes” the more I like him, regardless of if you agree with some of his footballing decisions or not, he is undoubtedly a very very intelligent guy, and it’s nice to see him relaxed and talking about his childhood.
I for one, as a life long Arsenal fan, am proud to have him managing our club, long may it continue,

I’m 100% sure that if Arsene’s transfer plan were followed through half of the team would be unrecognisable. Mr Krotchney and co. and the stadium deal have limited us for a while now. Looks like it’s slowly getting a whole lot better now though. Some people will always moan but positivity right now would make a lot sense considering it squad. You should try it, it feels good!

I do love the smirk he pulls off every so often. I hope his future biography is actually in his words (bonus if he has ‘look, uh…’ written into it) because the way he thinks and speaks is so nice. I also hope that smirk is the front cover (if not the pic of him holding back the giddiness of the Özil signing after a football match).

He has too much knowledge and expertise. We should be grateful to have him instead of abusing him week in week out.
He’s had a hard time with the financial limits in recent times and the explosion of oil and debt taken on by certain clubs. I’m sure he knew what would be coming and understands that fans will be angry with him. But that doesn’t mean we should leave our understanding and patience behind and just be passionate angry fans when things run a bit awry. I understand why some people want him out. His tenure may not have been as successful as Arsenal fans would have liked it to be.

For me, what that interview shows is that he still has something special. What player could look into those steely, weathered eyes and not be inspired? Arsène is so interesting, so charismatic and so human.

So good to see an interview with good questions! Honestly cant see an Arsenal without him. I know its bad and it should be about the club but for as long as ive supported Arsenal he’s been manager. When i was a kid I literally thought the club was named after him. The thing about Arsene is that he is genuine. A good human being. Regardless of the trophies and invincibles season, he has made a difference in so many players’ lives. He groomed future superstars,and turned many of them into better human beings. Bigger than football if you ask me

Always an intriguing figure, the manager. We should also give credit to the interviewer, who brings out interesting responses and follows up on them, rather than just running down a list. Maybe they rehearsed together, but it still seems natural. That’s a skill in and of itself.
I have never seen so many positive comments about Arsene. What a man! “I trust you” I really wonder the way this man thinks! So sophisticated and yet still motivated and satisfied by the simplest things. What a man.

Very few can compete with him for market acumen. Stones for 47m. Contrast Holding for 2.5m. Granted not saying Stones is a crap player but for close to similar capability/promise, Holding is an impressive signing. Granit another excellent signing at 35m compared with Spur’s panic buy for Sissoko at 27m (Don’t tell that to the press) Mustafi for 35m compared with Sideshow Bob for 34m. Press keep saying Chelsea did a good deal having sold him for 50m but they forget this unreliable player also cost CHelsea 23m initially so that’s 7m out on an erratic player at best. You miss the point
Definitely don’t miss the point. He’s a nice guy but he’s not great any more.
Not just his transfer policy, he’s tactically outsmarted quite a bit by better up and coming managers. His inability to change a game mid way, his inability to find the problems with training regimes to resolve our injury issues.
But it’s ok because he gave a great interview so he’s amazing.
You are taking about his ability to judge talent in the transfer market but choose to oversee all his failures in the transfer market. He’s bought his fair share of crap too.
I had tears in my eyes when he said the person he would most like to meet is his grandfather again. I feel exactly the same way (about my grandfather rather than AW’s).
That’s why Wenger is so amazing – he’s a legend but he’s also one of us.
