Last month Arsene Wenger spoke about Arsenal’s need to improve its scouting and to be more decisive in the transfer market when it comes to young players.
He cited the examples of Antoinne Griezmann and N’Golo Kante who were both on our radar but ended up elsewhere.
“Griezmann, Kanté, we could have signed them,” said Wenger, “but we missed the opportunity to do so, not necessarily because of our financial restrictions but because we weren’t rapid enough.”
Perhaps this is one of those players that Wenger feels will develop into something special, but his profile doesn’t fit into the manager’s assertion yesterday that the club needed to add ‘top quality’ this summer to make it contenders again.
Our poo-o-meter has almost finished its cleansing enema ahead of the silly season, so for now we’ll have go give this one manual poos, and we’re going with a runny 8 on this one.
It seems unlikely – but here’s a look at some of his goals anyway.
He can play upfront with Lucas!!
…and Sanogo.
And Sonogo. And Campbell.
I’m all for the recruitment of potential, just as long as we also see the acquisition of actual talent that’s ready to make an instant impact next season.
i think we should try to buy players like this more . one of the problem i found with wenger in his latter years compared to his glory days is that he was never afraid to spend the money and buy unproven players , it was actually his strength. thiery henry was a failed winger in juventus , anelka a youth team player in psg academy , van persie and adebayar were only a promising players . i’m all for buying wordclass players but arsenal are always really hesitant to greenlight huge transfer funds to buy that kind of players… Read more »
That was when he had almost competition-free access to the French market. The world has changed since then.
As even Wenger has said, out scouting has been left behind by the likes of Atletico and Dortmund. And even Spurs are possibly better on recent showings.
I dare say the last Wenger unknown that turned out to be WC was Kos.
The world has changrd and so has arsenal . we no longer have to rely on complete unknowns like those players ,now we can afford much better players yet we are still waiting for world class striker for discount price. how many players have we lost because wenger couldnt put the money on the table , hazard , griezman , lukaku, aubamayang , martial, dembele . Not a year goes by without wenger ruing on missed players .Rivals have got them and they are seeing the value of their money
If it’s true I can tell you he will not bring us what we need. And that is a top striker (like Lacazette, Griezmann etc.) I’m a Belgian myself and being a topscorer in our League doesn’t really mean a lot tbh… Actually he is even only the second topscorer behid Lukas Teodorczyk of Anderlecht. If Onyekuru manages to sore 20+ goals a couple of seasons in a row he might be worth it. For the moment we really don’t need him. (Fun fact: The Belgian League is named the Jupiler Pro League, Jupiler is a beer-brand so to make… Read more »
Fun fact – Belgians have no sense of humour….. :=|
And you sir, have no decorum 🙁
Do you even know if he will stay with the team for this season? He has just a primision 19years old player with a 7m clause! A opportunity that we should take if we thinks he’s worth a look.
“Top striker” Lacazette couldn’t get into the French national team for Euro 2016.
And so it begins!
Uvuvwevwevwe Onyetenyevwe Ugwemugwem Ossas. Long live King Henry.
got to be naija!
Nigerians will understand better
definitely Nigerian
So much for the catalyst for change.
Maybe Gazidis, having a premonition he would end up leaving Arsenal, got a tad confused and meant to say “catalyst for……hey there sir, got some spar change?”
The scary thing is that Wenger said yesterday that this team is strong enough to bounce back next season and that only 1 or 2 signings are truly needed.
I wonder if that number remains the same after a Sanchez and possibly Ozil move on this summer.
It is quotes like that (that have been stated hundreds of times by Wenger) that leaves with little to no confidence that he can build up a team that can actually challenge for major honors.
More of the same I’m afraid it appears.
What about nkietah? I know he’s young but sometimes all these youth players need these days is to be given a chance. Look at Bellerin, iwobi, holding.
In a slightly unrelated note, has anyone had a chance to see Corenten Tolisso? Quite an interesting player
i gotta agree both nketia and mavdidi looks baller , nketia espicially . we need to atleast need to give them a chance
Corenten Tolisso is wanted by some top European clubs, the way we do business. .no chance, unless off course Kronke management would back David Dein and let him deals with players transfers
“Perhaps this is one of those players that Wenger feels will develop into something special, but his profile doesn’t fit into the manager’s assertion yesterday that the club needed to add ‘top quality’ this summer to make it contenders again.”
I dunno, I think Arsene will always be on the lookout for guys like this. Sounds strongly plausible to me.
Every season needs a Sanogo, Asano, or lest we forget my favourite midfielder of all time, Arsenal legend Amaury Biscoff.
Btw we’ll have the Takuma Asano this season right, LOL
Better than all those guys…….combined!!
Besides, who is against having another “Henry”?
asano is just a pr excercise. i doubt if wenger will ever give him a chance . he never gave one for lucas perez and hes much better than asano. but the move worker out for asano atleast , he is having a good time in germany.
But the problem with African players is their commitment to the African Nations Cup tournament that involves 2 month absences every two years, other than that invest in potential. AW has an excellent record in spotting and developing young talented players, and yes that includes this season. As he has demonstrated.
Why is this measured in poos when it should be measured in tottenhams?
I’ve always thought the poo meter was in Tottenhams?! How do you tell the difference?
Poo is shit. Tottenham is really shit.
The poos are actually useful in this instance, so that’s how I tell the difference.
Will he be the new Perez Let’s not forget we have Asano joining the first team soon. He will surprise you.
Personally I’m still waiting for Sanogo to surprise me. I’m convinced he’s just a figment of Wenger’s imagination.
will asano surprise or shock us?
y y y has lucas played so little this season?! he has close control, cool finishing n knows wat to do.
we should be playing 352 next season as the default tactic no doubt. have the front 3 of mesut, alexis n lucas! (if the 1st 2 r still at the club tt is).
dont know much bout this Henry Onyekuru guy, but if he’s anywhere near ‘henry’ then yes 🙂
I agree, but please write properly. X
Well he also the one for the future. But can we sign a prolific striker for our current situation that better from Giroud/Welbs.
This squad needs some African spirit
I think we should revisit striker requirement this summer. We have of course other priorities ahead of it. 1) Watch on Ozil and Alexis. We need to retain at least one of them. 2) Even if we retain BOTH, we should add another player with guile in the attacking second line. Someone like Konoplyanka on loan at Schalke from Sevilla with good technical ability and vision. 3) I feel we should also cash in on Walcott whilst he still holds some value. At 28yrs, his pace and main asset will start to wane. We have to be careful who we… Read more »
Seriously consider getting a blog.
Tldr
Not to be rude but can you please stick with what the post is about. Not what you would do if you were Arsene. Please stop spamming the same stuff on every post.
Seriously man – you have no idea what you’re talking about. You want us to get a bench player with mediocre stats in Schalke as an upgrade on who exactly? Bakayoko is just Coquelin with pace. Infact, I’d say Coq is slightly more technically gifted. I’m not going to address your flamini love fest.
Draxler is not leaving PSG anytime soon. I don’t know why you’d even consider him an option .
Nigeria as a whole is becoming an exciting International prospect again.
We don’t have to put up with this. Being a fan doesn’t mean accepting abuse. I’m so bored of this year after year. Please can we unite, protest and affect some proper change.
I reckon he’ll be the best striker named Henry to ever play for the club.
I’m flattered I have an imposter!!
Yep, that’ll win us the league. Well done.
If he turns out to be another gem of a player and we miss out on signing him I’m sure loads on here would throw tantrums! Whether he’s from a very light league is sometimes inconsequential to the talent he might have. This is a big club and part of our values is giving opportunities like this and I’m totally for it. Hope it works out with majority of our young blood reasonably well.
This is such an Arsenal signing, I love it.
He’s a long term arsenal fan from sources. Henry was his idol
So that’s Sanchez’ replacement found, now on to Ozil’s.
I think it is going to happen. I am happy about this cos we need enough legs because of our Europa league matches.
The ref and the keeper had a big part to play in his first two goals on the video. It’s a “no” from me. 🙂
Not quite ready yet….he has to work on his knee slide
I think we should do whatever we can to get Morata.
He’s mobile, strong, can finish. Good medium between Welbeck and Giroud
And he’s more attainable than Griezmann etc.
I have never seen or heard of this player but if he can bag 20 goals a season I say get him. The only think is we need instant talent and not just young players so I hope we will be buying experienced and decent players as well.
Wenger realising things fans noticed ten years ago, well done.
Good young player with massive potential, but I think we should do way better. We need a world class wide forward. Reus, James (he can play there) are viable options. Onyekuru is a great finisher, quick, good technique but he’s also very selfish. I don’t know if a move to Arsenal would be good for his career at this stage. At the moment, I don’t rate him over Lucas Perez.
Well he’s only 19. I’ll assume that he’s able to improve. And for the price we’re paying, I don’t see what the risk is.
The bottomline is that Arsenal will never outspend Citeh Chelsea or even Man utd..Leicester has shown that if you can get your recruitment right..and find players that match the right tactics ..the sky is the limit..
I don’t have a problem with signing unknowns with real potential…but it does mean having a manager with tactical nous to make it work or finding the right system for the group..Lord knows I gave up on Wenger since the 2008/9 season 9yrs ago..long before the Wenger out brigade
One thing is certain looking at this kid he takes risks to force the issue ..he will be an asset around the opposition box…Only Alexis and maybe the OX takes players on …that’s why our football so far has been so dire especially when the passing is ineffective around opposition box against teams that park the bus
Will he come as part of the Aliko Dangote takeover package?
I like the look of him. He’d be a fine addition imo.
Can somebody sign Wenger please, we even pay his 8million a year salary to push the transfer through.
Good young player. Scoring 25 goals for a shitty team in any league is hard so dont understand the derision over Belgian league. If it was so easy, why don’t we have more players in that league scoring 30-40 goals a season.
Let’s not make him another that got away when another club buys him and he is worth tens of millions.
A 19 year old in a European top flight who scored more goals than the rest of the squad combined? No brainer!!
