Arsenal and Chelsea will donate their fee for participating in the FA Community Shield to those tragically affected by last week’s Grenfell Tower fire.
It is hoped that the match, which will be played on 6 August, will raise as much as £1.25 million and provide an opportunity for both clubs and their respective supporters to pay their respects to the victims and the emergency services who showed so much courage and bravery in the face of the disaster.
Arsenal have also confirmed that supporters purchasing tickets to the match (they aren’t yet on sale) will be given a chance to donate an optional £5 when they buy their match ticket.
On behalf of the club, CEO Ivan Gazidis said: “With the rest of the nation, Arsenal Football Club was shocked by the incident at Grenfell Tower and our hearts go out to all those affected by this tragedy.
“The club stands side by side with Chelsea in reaching out to the community and expressing our support and solidarity for those who have lost friends and family, their homes and their sense of security in the wake of this tragic event.
“We also pay tribute to our city’s emergency services who showed immense courage and bravery. We play the FA Community Shield on Sunday, August 6, with the victims and the heroes of this terrible tragedy close to our hearts.”

I would just like to add, on a footballing note. Next to this tragic event i play football at the Westway football pitches which has become a logistics/help centre since the tragedy. There are kids on those pitches at a good age that could def make it if given the chance. Most that i come across and have played with are playing for semi pro clubs and have offers abroad but really want to make it in the UK. I hope our scouts are down there a few nights a week watching some of these guys because they are proper… Read more »

Brilliant sentiment and gesture from both clubs. I can’t help but think the owners of the two respective clubs have wealth dripping from the ears and they can easily throw a drop of their vast oceans in the victims’ direction. Alas, it seems generosity is generally negatively correlated with wealth.
