Last summer Arsenal finally said goodbye to Wellington Silva after the Brazilian, signed in 2010, was sold to Fluminense.
The attacker had spent most of his time as a Gunner in Spain turning out for Levante, Alcoyano, Ponferridina, Murcia and Almeria in a string of underwhelming loan moves.
He then spent a season at Bolton Wanderers where he showed some nice skills at times, before being sold on to the Brazilian side.
However, despite doing well at Fluminense with 9 goals last season and despite their desire to keep him, because he went there on a free transfer, Arsenal have exercised their right to buy back his rights before selling him on.
GloboEsporte say that we’ll buy him back from Brazil for a fixed price as agreed when we sold him (€5m), before moving him on to French side Bordeaux.
All in all, a bit of a weird one, perhaps one our new contract supremo will have had to work on, because it all sounds a bit complicated.
Still, it gives us one more chance to give Wellington the boot.
Haha, the last sentence ?
I actually have a beef with that.
One too many words George
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.
FUCK YES
Been a massive fan of the kid (defended him loads here under the old name of “Stillmatic” and I knew a few academy players at Arsenal who considered him the best player they played with.
Web he left I kind lost all hope in the academy. His return has me excited again. He’s been playing really well over at Fluminess according to my Brazilian friends too.
He’s not really returning though?
Have you actually read the article?
*chin stroke emoji*
?
Which article did you stop reading half way down?
Can we buy back Hleb? YES. WE. CAAAN.
Sorry for through over excitement and foul language, I’m just excited. I know football isn’t all about the winning and trophies, but outsideof that, there are other things such as seeing a potential player develop and become something, especially when you believe in them. Apart from not competing for the league, a big reason of my dismay with Arsenal is that I do feel many young players aren’t making it through like they used to. Combination of the players themselves and purchasing of first team players making it harder, but in the years I’ve had to see guys I was… Read more »
Follow Nketiah or Nelson, they might give you hope.
Pretty harsh you’re being downvoted for just being enthusiastic and hopeful, mate. Who knows what could happen, given he’s probably going to Bordeaux then I’m sure Wenger will still be monitoring him to some degree… I too have been disheartened by youth progress over the years; Akpom, Hayden, Miyaichi, Pleguezuelo etc. Unfortunately their rises have either been underwhelming or just simply haven’t happened. Iwobi looks good, and I’m hoping for a few break out seasons for the likes of Jeff, Bielek and co. I’m tired of people claiming the only good academies are Saints, Sp*ds, and United. We used to… Read more »
I remember getting excited over Jay Simpson, JET, Frimpong, Anthony Stokes, Thomas Eisfeld, Bartley, Bendtner and Lupoli.
Lol, the last two were added for a joke!
Or for player’s like Héctor Bellerín and Ainsley Maitland-Niles…. No chance for the youngsters at all!!
Bro Gnabry, Ryo and Wellington are long gone. Quite honestly only Gnabry ever had a chance. Look at our new ones they’re even better.
he is definitely not returning.
Looking forward to the next story when Bordeaux decide they don’t want to buy him anymore 😉
This must be the ‘arsenal values’ and ‘doing things the right way’ that Wenger was crapping on about over the past couple of days right?
I remember the wailing on here about Bayern’s ‘unethical’ behaviour over Gnabry & I got slated when I pointed out that football was totally rotten & it was silly for anyone to assume arsenal were whiter than white.
My point proven here.
I’d be surprised if the fee Bordeaux are going to pay is going to be significantly more than the €5 million Arsenal will.
Arsene trying to make a quick quid.
Hope this transfer goes through smoothly and he doesn’t end up holding a grudge for us pulling him out of his native Brazil. Would prefer no beef, Wellington.
an awful lot of prep work there, but I think it was worth it!
Happy for the player, so many of the young south American signings we make end up fading back in their home countries, nice to see him move to a top European league. Be interesting to see if we draw Bordeaux in the Europa league (also nice away trip).
Also, we need to be doing more deals like this – I’m sure we’ll add a sell on clause which can only be a good thing.
Hope we sell him for at least £10m, would be a decent return otherwise I’m not sure in the point of Arsenal doing this is.
Yeah I know. Imagine doing some paperwork for any less than 5 million quid..
Oh you didn’t.
I can imagine us buying him back, and then Bordeaux signing someone else instead. So now, we’re left with another player on our books…
