Video: Per Mertesacker on world mental health day

Today is world mental health day. In this video, produced by the club, Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker talks about his experience of carrying out mandatory social service as a young man, and meeting people who had mental health issues.

He says it made him a better person and a better footballer.

World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.

The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.

Watch Per, and let’s talk.

I bloody love Per.

Contrast the BFG doing social service and helping people with mental health to the Shrek doing community service for drink-driving…

Hats off to Per. In a day where it is applauded to talk down to people and name call, seeing someone support those who may be marginalized and often carry an unwarranted stigma is a fresh breath of air. We all have struggles and downfalls in life. It’s how we deal with them that matters.

Stigma! Much like the kind Arsenal and Arsene and Ozil and Ramsey too… We all need to be a bit more sensitive no matter how passionate about football and Arsenal we are

Bai Blagoi

Great person! So luck to have him at the club!

shokim

Top bloke. So lucky to have Per <3

Thanks for sharing this blogs. Love the well-rounded outlook on the site, it’s surely what makes people keep coming back here.

santori

Head and shoulders above the rest the BFG.

Legend.

If Mustafi is out for a while and Koscielny continues to have niggling injuries, we may have to rely on BFG to hold for us in the centre. Monreal holds down the left but the right side is up for grabs IMO. Holding still has a bit of work to do. Chambers hasn’t featured. BOTH might benefit from some mental floss from the BFG in polishing up their game. BOTH have potential but we will have to protect the back line from midfield because we will be more vulnerable than not without Mustafi and Koscielny. Touch wood, Mustafi and Koscielny… Read more »

Ffs santori, you can’t help yourself can you ? There should be one type of comment only on here – various takes on how great the BFG is. End of.

I can’t think of a better ambassador for the club than Per.

When Wenger talks about values you can undersnad why he chose our BFG to take charge of our upcoming talents whose attitudes must be as important as their technical abilities.

Per is so right. My wife and I run a club for people with learning difficulties in our spare time. It’s once a week and the people that come along love it and it is the highlight of their week in many cases. We get so much pleasure from doing it and have gained so many friends with learning disabilities. These people are amongst the best on the planet, always having a smile on their faces and never saying a bad word about anyone ever! It’s called “Rock it Club” and please give us a like on Facebook if you… Read more »

Love this. I’ve worked with adults with traumatic brain injuries for 6 years and it is such a humbling experience to see how fragile life is and how it can change instantly. COYG

Who on earth would give a thumbs down to that comment?

As somebody who has had to support a family member with special needs, as well as the love of my life doing it for a living every single day, this puts a smile to my face and tear in my eye. Class.

Really ?

I’m just glad he gets to handle our young guns, they’ll learn a lot about being good humans from him

per is fast turning into arsene wenger; he knows everything! but hats off to him for this. I grew up in rural Zimbabwe, and one day, my cousin came back home and his mind was gone. just like that. the image of him chained to a tree so he wouldn’t hurt himself or others has never escaped me. i would spend the day with him in the pastures – it did help a bit that i was still a kid myself and did not realise how much it affected me until i was much older. mental illness is a harrowing… Read more »
