Despite going through a difficult period at Hoffenheim, Reiss Nelson has been called up to the England U21 squad for their games against Poland and Germany this month.
The on-loan Arsenal winger was left out of the squad entirely for the Bundesliga side’s last game, with manager Julian Nagelsmann describing it as an ‘educational measure’.
This was believed to have been due to a breach of discipline in some way, and after a sparkling start to life in Germany for the 19 year old, he’s now gone over three months without scoring or assisting.
Nevertheless, Aidy Boothroyd has named Nelson in his squad for the games against Poland at Ashton Gate on Thursday 21 March before a fixture against Germany at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium.
Hopefully it might give him a boost at a point in the season where it feels like he could do with it, and he can finish strongly with Hoffenheim between now and May.
Nelson, by the way, is the only Arsenal representative in the U21 and senior England squads for this upcoming Interlull.
Wondering if I should start getting worried about his actual ability… Focus son… Focus!!!
Jeez, the boy who was getting praised by all for goals in Bundesliga and for national youth team is now put into doubt during the same season.
I’m surprised World Cup winner AMN is not in the U21 squad!
He’s 21 now so wouldn’t he be too old for the U21?
I love the way Richie got downvoted despite being right! Wikipedia says AMN was born 29 August 1997. Definitely Not Under 21.
I just looked into it further, it seems AMN is still eligible for the squad up until the end of the U21 European Championships this year as he was under 21 when the qualifications began (there are a few players named in the current squad older than him).
In fairness the Germans do have a month off at Christmas so the 3 month thing isn’t quite as bad as it sounds. Also, if you compare his game time already this season with Sancho in his first season last year, they’re pretty much similar. I hope he hasn’t let it get to his head but all’s not lost yet…
Nelson should be the first name on the list based on the goals he scored for the english youth team few months ago.
I think whatever he’s going through is just a blip, the talent is there, he just needs consistency like most young players. Hoping he gets over this quickly and kicks on.
Congrats to our 19 year old defender Daniel Ballard who was called up to the Northern Ireland senior squad this week.
I think this lad will be fine……..has everything apart from maybe a little maturity.
Congrats on the call up.
Indulge me just a moment:
I see reports about Arsene using London Transport today.
Isn’t so much nicer to have a legendary ex manager, who doesn’t steal limelight from our present incumbent unlike that arch bollox lording it at every shitfest match of his former club. Keep turning up mate along with Sir Bobby, and may your results continue to crash.
Thankyou Arsene………class is permanent.
