The Arsenal Women Arsecast Episode 10 – ‘Tis the [awards] season

Welcome to a brand new episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast, the number one podcast about Arsenal Women.

For this month’s episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast Pippa and Tim are joined by women’s football journalist Sophie Lawson. Tim and Pippa chat with Sophie about individual awards in women’s football. Should they exist? Is there enough global coverage of the women’s game to do them justice? Is there any problem with them being popularity contests? And is Vivianne Miedema unfairly overlooked when it comes to dishing out the baubles?

The panel also talk a little bit about the Conti Cup and whether it’s still useful in its current format, the WSL title race and the arrival of Sam Kerr at Chelsea and what it could mean for the WSL salary cap. All that and more in this month’s Arsenal Women Arsecast- the only and therefore the best podcast dedicated to the Arsenal Women’s team.

If you are a regular listener via iTunes, if you would be so kind as to leave a review/rating that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the effort Tim. Must confess I’m finding the subject matter of individual awards a bit boring now (Viv sums it up perfectly!). Sophie Lawson sounded like her cold was winning.

Thanks Tim! I find the perception that we have been strugling this season confusing. Maybe we were little rusty in the first couple of games, but after the Chelsea game we have absolutely dominated games and even in the 1:0 games the results were never in doubt. We have scored more than 70 goals in 19 games. Our passing stats are the best in the league and even better than last year. Compared to last year I think our opposition has been tougher because Spurs and ManU are much better than Yeovil. Every game we have to brake down teams… Read more »

Yeah but I get what Sophie meant. Up until Jordan’s injury last year Arsenal were playing football from a different planet, we haven’t quite hit those heights on a consistent basis since. We have spells of games that have been at that level, but not too many 90 minute spells. But we’ve still been playing very well- especially since the beginning of November.

Yeah I get that also and liked the interview a lot. I just get little irked everytime our this seasons results are only analyzed in the context of beginning of last season. I think that evaluating our performances only against that run until Jordan’s injury, is not very productive. Last year during that run our opposition gave us more room to play and many of our goals from that period game from quick transitions. No team gives us that much room anymore. I think it was Leah who said that Arsenal had to be feared again. Now we are being… Read more »

Agreed, apart from Bristol becoming the new Yeovil, every other team outside the top three we have faced so far have upped their game against us (inevitably). Despite early flurries of attacking intent we’ve had two sets of well drilled Scousers “park the bus” and we’ve ended up with comfortable rather unspectacular wins. I took my 3 year old grandson to Meadow Park for the Liverpool game. He got bored so we wandered down to the sparsely populated South Terrace in the second half where he happily splashed in the puddles whilst me and a Liverpool supporter chatted. There was… Read more »
