Arsenal have confirmed that the knee injury sustained by Gabriel Martinelli will rule him out of the club’s final games of the 2019/20 season.
The Brazilian clashed knees with a teammate in training last week leaving Mikel Arteta to rue the club’s bad luck with injuries ahead of yesterday’s win at Southampton.
He’s since had has a “successful arthroscopic procedure undertaken to repair a lesion in the cartilage of the left knee”. Basically, keyhole surgery.
Martinelli had been on the bench against Manchester City and Brighton but didn’t actually get on the pitch in either game.
Elsewhere, Pablo Mari has also undergone surgery. The Spaniard picked up an ankle problem at the Etihad last week. Like Martinelli, he’s out for the rest of this campaign. The club reckon he could face up to three months on the sidelines which means he might even miss the start of next season.
In better news, Cedric Soares is in contention for Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final with Sheffield United on Sunday. David Luiz will be available for selection having served his two-game suspension and so too will Kieran Tierney, who went down with cramp last night. The Scot doesn’t seem to like the hot weather too much.
We should also be able to call on Lucas Torreira soon. The Uruguayan is aiming to return to full training in the coming days.
It’s like a WWE tag team match in and out of the treatment room
I really, really hope that Martinelli makes a full recovery.
I’m not big on physiotherapy knowledge, but I know that anything involving cartilage can be a reoccuring, niggly bastard of an injury.
I can confirm it’s a real bastard, but he’s probably had a better surgeon than me!
Can anyone with better knowledge of injuries and medical science confirm if it is unusual or not for a professional athlete in their late teens to need surgery? Assuming there is a sensible cut off (arf arf), ie they haven’t had a leg broken in several places which could happen to anyone at any age.
It just seemed odd to me when i read it, something that I usually associate with older pros a good few years under their belt….
It’s not uncommon and not really age related.
If there’s a good time to lose them and Leno, it’s at the arse end of this nothing season.
The surgery went well… the two have united to one, joint at the hip, aiming to become a footballing hybrid with the strength and power the likes of which have never been seen since Adriano on Pro Evolution Soccer 6.
The surgery went well indeed.
Tierney seems like a great player, but his fitness constantly seems to be in doubt.
Tierney has a bit of the Ramsey’s with these niggling injuries. I hope he can be a bit more durable going forward.
Luiz in contention? Yikes, Mustafi and Holding again please.
We are happy about a victory over Southampton and Liverpool fans are celebrating winning the league after winning the CL last year. What is going on? Ok got that out of my system now.
I always compare Martinelli to RVP when he started. Hope he gets much less injuries than RVP.
That means Sokratis and Luiz central defence with Cedric and kolasinac full backs. Xhaka Niles and Ozil midfield. Nelson, laca and pepe to start against Sheffield
Holding and Mustafi should be our CB pair in such an important match. Sokratis/Cedric can rotate for Bellerin maybe.
I thought Luiz received an extra game because of another red. Either way, I don’t see his displacing Holding or Mustafi for The Blades game. Mustafi may be error-prone but Luiz is something else.
What is it with this club…cannot stay away from injury curse..
I think Luiz would serve us better in the midfield. .playing him as holding midfielder is a better option
