If you were wondering why there’s a two week gap between the Community Shield and the start of the Premier League season, I have one word for you – Interlull.
In addition to Uefa Nations League matches – nope, we still don’t understand how that tournament works – there are a couple of rounds of friendlies between European sides coming up in early September.
Obviously, the timing isn’t ideal. The Arsenal first team only returned to London Colney today so it seems somewhat bizarre that many of them will head off again next week. Such are the times we live in.
Free from injury and in fine form, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Kieran Tierney has been given the nod by Scotland. He’s not played for them for nearly two years.
Ahead of matches with Israel (4 September) and the Czech Republic (8 September), coach Steve Clarke said: “You want as many good players as possible in your squad and Kieran will make it better.”
We’ve yet to have confirmation but we’re also expecting senior call-ups for Sokratis, Granit Xhaka and Sead Kolasinac. If Bernd Leno is fit again he might be in with a shout of a Germany call-up.
With Euro under-21 qualification matches scheduled, most of our youngsters could also be selected.
Aidy Bothroyd could call on Bukayo Saka, Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock, Emile Smith Rowe and Reiss Nelson for England and you’d imagine Matteo Guendouzi (who?) and William Saliba could get selected for France.

I mean, obviously Tierney is getting a Scotland nod. He’s one of the two best Scottish players (sadly they both play in the same position). As a Scot, I wanted to see Tierney down the left but the good thing about him getting games at LCB is it’s hopefully given Steve Clarke some idea about how to get two of the world’s best LBs in the same team!
