The major news concerns Terry Burton, who was confirmed as the club’s new Reserve coach in a statement last night. It was also revealed that Burton, a former youth player and coach with the Gunners, will oversee Arsenal’s maiden campaign in the NextGen series, the youth equivalent of the Champions League, in which they will face several talented sides from across Europe.
It is not exactly clear, however, which players Burton will be working with in the forthcoming campaign, with his pool of options likely to be made considerably smaller by the fact that several of the players at his disposal will head out on loan over the next few weeks.
One player has already done so in Joel Campbell, who has linked up with Real Betis in La Liga after showing glimpses of his potential with Lorient last season. The Costa Rican striker also shone at international level, but, as Arsene Wenger acknowledges, needs to develop more consistency in his game before he is ready to challenge for a place in the Arsenal first-team squad.
Another striker, Benik Afobe, has been linked with a temporary switch to Birmingham City, although any such move will not occur until the 19 year old has returned from the UEFA U-19 Championships in Estonia, where he is currently representing England’s youngsters. Like Campbell, Afobe possesses much potential but is still quite a raw talent and another loan spell, to add to the time he has spent with Huddersfield Town and Reading, would surely stand him in good stead for the future.
The Reserves get their pre-season fixtures underway against Boreham Wood at Meadow Park a week on Saturday before facing further games against Stevenage, Chesham and Dartford. It has been suggested that Jack Wilshere, as he makes his way back from almost an entire calendar year on the sidelines, could feature in one or two of these matches to build up his fitness, although that has yet to be confirmed.
There will, however, be some youngsters featuring with the first-team squad this summer throughout the Asia Tour and beyond. Nico Yennaris, Kyle Bartley and Conor Henderson have all been earmarked to feature in Asia, while others, such as goalkeeper Damian Martinez and midfielder Thomas Eisfeld, who joined from Borussia Dortmund in January, could also feature in some capacity.
Good to see that our youth policy seems to be flourishing. We should make a change though. If any of our young players seems injury prone and spend more time on the treatment table than on the pitch, we should get rid of them immediately before they have one good season and then fuck off.

RVP had a remarkable season, no doubt. But comparing his deparure to Henry’s is stupid. Thierry had an unbelievable career at Arsenal, not just a great year and a half. We waited so long for RVP to be fit so to claim waiting for Diaby is wrong doesn’t really make sense. Both showed flashes of brilliance from time to time but never could be relied upon until RVP had this extended period of staying fit. So the jury is still out on Diaby. Loaning Campbell and Afobe i think is going to be a right decision. They both need the experience, especially Afobe. But that means we’re going to be short on striker. Both Podolski and Giroud can play as strikers, Theo and Gervinho also could and Arshavin has been used there by AW when RVP was injured the season before. I imagine if RVP goes we will purchase another forward also.

Just give another striker the 142 goal scoring chances that van persie got in the league last season and im certain whoever it is will take 30 of them. even bendtner had a better conversion rate than rvp last season.
That’s a little harsh for last season, but I agree with your larger point. For about 7 seasons out of 8, van Persie had a massive tendency to lash at chances that he should at least have made the keeper work with, but this was often overshadowed by his flair and tendency to score pretty goals.
And why? Because he was always out crocked, so when he played he was rusty, not perfectly match fit, and hadn’t had a chance to get a rhythm and some confidence going.
In other words, he wasn’t any different to Bendtner or Chamahk when they only got sporadic starts.
There is no guarantee either of those players would have failed to do what RVP did last season had they been given the same 38 game run in the Premier League. I think we have been too hard on them.

It’s an ongoing campaign every summer. Toure, Adebayor, Nasri, Clichy, RVP. Same set of hands in there every time.
He could be played in the reserves for the first game of their season, just to make sure he knows how valuable he now is to the club, and he better hope he doesn’t come up against a lot of discontented reserve players like Shawcross, or he could spend the year in the treatment room. Those reserve games can be tough on “superstars”.

Its probably just fake. Szescneys weak points come in his decision making and positioning, even then he’s already pretty damn good at his weak points.
