Khayon Edwards steps up to U21 level with ease

Some players find the transition from U18s football to the U21s a rather difficult one.

For Khayon Edwards, however, the step up has been straightforward, with the 18-year-old having played a pivotal part as the second-string have started the season in impressive fashion.

Edwards was prolific for the U18s as he established himself as the team’s main striker. He had a few appearances for the U21s over the past couple of seasons, but despite only being officially promoted this summer he is already leading the line for the older age group and looks very much at home at that level.

A spell in midfield last season helped Edwards to improve his tactical understanding of the game, and his link-up play is of a very high standard.

In addition, he has become stronger of late and is working hard at holding the ball up.

So far this season Edwards has scored two goals in three Premier League 2 appearances and it is likely that his tally will increase significantly as the campaign progresses.

Edwards will inevitably have designs on breaking into the first-team squad eventually and it is possible that he could receive his first call-up to the senior team this season, perhaps in the Europa League.

For now he will be looking to continue catching the eye for the U21s.

Sounds great, good luck to him!

i watched the lad the first half against ipswich last season, and im telling you he’s class. he could really develop into one of the world’s best players, probably ballon d’or next season. and with him in the squad i think we can be serious contenders for prem. unbeaten run maybe?

He would do well to get his PL debut this year in our unbeaten season.

Thanks for that Jeorge.

Well, he may sit on the bench for an EL group stage or cup games, but I think those minutes were already ‘sold’ when Nketiah signed his new contract.
Anyway it’s nice being involved with the first team, even if that doesn’t lead to playing. But after the season Edwards will be in an intense competition to be the 3rd choice striker of the team with Balogun, Biereth, Möller and John-Jules still ahead of him.
May the best – in our case: the most talented and patient – lad win.
