Arsenal will face Brighton at the Emirates in the Carabao Cup third round.
Despite the draw taking place today, the match won’t happen until the second week of November after we’ve concluded all six Europa League group stage games.
It’s fair to say the League Cup is not Arsenal’s favourite competition. Founded in 1960, we’ve only won it twice and the last of those was nearly 30 years ago. There’s been plenty of heartbreak at the semi-final stage and on six occasions we’ve lost in the final, most recently in 2017/18 to Manchester City.
Maybe this year will be different.
Full draw
Leicester City vs Newport County
West Ham vs Blackburn Rovers
Wolves vs Leeds United
Nottingham Forest vs Sp*rs
Manchester United vs Aston Villa
Bournemouth vs Everton
Liverpool vs Derby County
Burnley vs Crawley
Bristol City vs Lincoln City
Manchester City vs Chelsea
Stevenage vs Charlton
MK Dons vs Morecambe
Newcastle vs Crystal Palace
Southampton vs Sheffield Wednesday
Arsenal vs Brighton
Brentford vs Gillingham
Good to get a home draw and with the buzz around the club right now it should be close to a full house.
Sandwiched between two tricky away matches at Chelsea and Wolves, will expect heavy rotation.
Just a shame that we might not be able to go all out. Would love to see a Vieira / Lokonga / The Smith midfield but you just can’t do that against a team like Brighton.
Don’t be too surprised if Mikel goes quite strong.
It’s almost the worst team to draw in that if we drew City / Liverpool we could just treat it as a freebie.
I still think we’ll be fine.
Dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah.
What? You guys can’t be sleeping without a song to get you off…
I think we’ll name the strongest possible side. Brighton aren’t a team you can throw the youngsters out against expecting a result.
Why on earth would we play the strongest side in the least important tournament at home to Brighton. The one redeeming feature of the Carabao Cup is that it allows us to play the fringe players such as Marquinhos.
Or we could throw on a team of Pepe’s just for you 👍🏻
Honestly right now there is no team that I would fear not even city. We are probably the form team in the top 5 leagues right now and the one team most will want to avoid.
Form team after three games; Christ!!!
Even then, Bayern has scored 15 goals in 3 games; PSG too, is winning and scoring for fun. I think it is a tad too early in the day to be talking like this. Let’s go about 10 games, and we can start talking about form.
Though i too urge caution, at least until we’ve recovered from going behind in a game, i do think the compapisons with the Paris Globetrotters and Bayarn Monopolisers is as ridiculous. Go for someone from an at least some of the time competitive league.
“Form team in the top 5 leagues right now”.
We’ve played 3 games against Palace, struggling Leicester and newly promoted Bournemouth. Slow down mate and let’s see after another 2 months or so
Boo. Hiss.
At least we’re at home.
Boo. Hiss.
Do Brighton even have a squad?
Boo. Hiss.
Surely Potter will be resting too.
Annnnnd, I’m ok with it.
COYG!!!
You been drinking, my friend? You seem a bit giddy!
Brighton of all teams🤦♂️ I was hoping for a Stockport or something
Brighton will play close to a full strength team, so we should do exactly the same. They’re no mugs, and we should take them seriously.
Our Second 11 at present (assuming no injuries):
Turner
Tomi
Holding
One of white/saliba/gabi/academy
Tierney
el Neneny
Lokonga
Viera
ESR
Nketiah
Marquinhos
I have no issues with any of these guys and we can bring Jesus, Saka, GM, etc.. off the bench
COYG
Would have preferred an easier fixture.
Can’t lie, I woke up this morning, checked my notifications, then 5 mins later asked myself did I see Brighton. Followed by, I hope I saw Barnsley.
I wouldn’t put it past hard to play, organised Brighton, knocking our B team out
Would have preferred an easier draw this early but COYG! Helps it’s at the Emirates.
This is a tough fixture but a good one for the second string players to hopefully continue some momentum after the Europa group games.
Think thats a solid point that coming when it does, our second string should be match sharp by then.
I always wonder whether Arteta could delegate the Europa league group stage to his assistants, or at least the away games, whilst he remains at
Colney focusing on the next league encounter. Remember that performance against City last year was under Stuivenberg, whilst Mik was sidelined by Covid.
Seems like a bit of a weird idea to me, but I gave you an upvote in any case. I find it weird that people would downvote someone for a suggestion rather than respond to it.
I never understood that myself. People sometimes ask genuine questions, but you see many downvotes and zero answers
No because that’s against the rules.
Difficult game it will be. Brighton is a brilliantly run club with a great manager.
We’ll shelve that for now and focus on staying on top of the League table. If Leicester can do it…
Nov 5th….. Chelsea (a)
Nov 12th… Wolves (h)
Not sure where the Brighton game falls (between the 8th and 10th) but I expect Arteta will go full strength as the World Cup mid-season break is afterwards.
Good point. F**k the world cup
Strongly doubt any of our players going will be binning it off
Genuinely worried we’re going to suffer the consequences of an England vs Brazil final with three players apiece lining up for each side
Is there an organised boycott in place yet?
There should be. I’ve told everyone at work I’m not watching it.
If you can find 4 good reasons for not doing something. Don’t do it.
Was hoping for an easier draw, like Crawley, Morecambe, or Manchineel United
WTF? Manchester United
Dont be underestimating the Red Devils…
…They beat Fulham in the last round after all
Not the easiest draw by any means, if Potter takes it seriously. He rotated the whole starting line up for the last round against Forest Green, but who knows what he’ll do for us
Would be nice if both managers could agree in advance to field second string teams in early round games like this!
“If both managers AGREE IN ADVANCE to field second string teams..”
Does that not sound like an accord match? Does that not also impinge on the integrity of the game? I mean, all managers are bound by the ethics of their profession to always put their team in the best position to win a football match, no?
Just wondering.
Great that it’s a home draw, but not ideal opposition. Brighton are good. But they still don’t have a proper goalscorer, so we can probably take advantage of that.
Welbz.
You didn’t watch Welbeck vs Utd. He’s looking like prime Giroud
He’ll be injured by the time we play them.
Whoa, I had no idea we will have concluded all six Europa League group stage games by the second week of November. Plenty of games for all.
Why are my comments being moderated so heavily? Perhaps have a bit of a potty mouth but no more than i see or hear on the blog/pod and overwhelmingly directed at Mourinho and Mike Dean.
Perhaps some heated discussions on Ozil but have we not moved on from that by now.?
Maybe Blogs just doesn’t like your face?
😄😄😄
Did wonder if it might be fat thumbs on an overly sensitive touch screen leading to admittedly way too many typos.
We’re playing at home against Brighton. It’s not the easiest tie but there should be no risk of complacency, and the home support will be there 100%. I like this tie. Barring Liverpool, all the other top teams are facing trickier ties than us too.
Could have been worse, but we can’t afford to be complacent. It will be a big surprise if we fail to get through though.
