Result: Sp*rs 0-2 Arsenal
Competition:
Premier League
Date:
15 January 2023
Venue:
White Hart Lane

Arsenal: Ramsdale, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko, Partey, Xhaka, Odegaard, Martinelli, Saka, Nketiah

Subs: Turner, Holding, Tierney, Tomiyasu, Lokonga, Smith, Vieira, Marquinhos, Smith Rowe

An own goal by Hugo Lloris and a fine strike by Martin Odegaard saw Arsenal beat Sp*rs 2-0 to record a first away win in the north London derby since 2014.

The victory was built on a supremely confident first half showing and a mature defensive effort, aided by a spotless performance by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, after the break.

In addition to the derby bragging rights, the three points also extend our lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points ahead of a showdown with in-form Manchester United next Sunday.

Pre-game

There were no surprises when the starting lineups were announced with Mikel Arteta turning to the same XI that started against Newcastle and Brighton. The only notable absentee from the squad was Mohamed Elneny whose place on the bench was taken by Matt Smith. Emile Smith Rowe was also a welcome presence among the substitutes.

First Half

Spurs may have been slow starters this season but they were always going to come roaring out of the traps in a north London derby. Early on they pressed high challenging Arsenal to be brave on the ball. We were unfazed and did well working the ball out from deep areas to progress up the pitch.

We too pressed high and when Lloris and Doherty got in a muddle under pressure from Martinelli and Odegaard, the ball fell to Nketiah who forced a save. The striker will feel he should have done better despite his effort being on target.  On the plus side, he looked sharp in his movement and hold-up play and when he was taken out by Romero, Odegaard curled in a free-kick that Partey headed over.

The Ghanaian was involved again on 14 minutes springing Saka down the right wing with a nicely weighted lofted pass. It was a decisive moment. The England international, racing into space, dribbled into the box forcing marker Sessegnon backwards before crossing with his right foot. The ball took a slight deflection that wrongfooted Lloris and the keeper fumbled the ball into the net unchallenged. It was a mess of a goal for the home side. Arsenal celebrated with a big group huddle that doubled up as a team talk. (GOAL 1-0)

Sp*rs looked to hit back straight away and Ramsdale had to make a smart save down low to deny Son as he latched onto a through ball. After that, it was all Arsenal.

Saka and Nketiah again caused havoc down the right with their pressing and the latter delivered a cutback that the home side cleared in a panic. More patient play and great movement worked space for Odegaard who stung Lloris’ palms with a drive from 20 yards.

Martinelli was the next to try his luck, improvising a volley before the ball dropped perfectly to Partey who hammered a long-range volley with perfect technique that rattled Lloris’ post. It was an incredible effort.

Sp*rs looked nervous and really struggled to get out of their half. Whether they tried short passes or long balls, we swept up the danger, reset and worked the ball upfield. We just needed to make our possession count, we needed to be decisive.

On 35 minutes, we were exactly that. We worked the ball to Saka, he tucked a pass inside to Odegaard and the Norwegian had the space to pick a spot before ramming home a low drive from outside the box. It was pure class. (GOAL 2-0)

“You’ll always be sh*t,” taunted the travelling Gooners who were in raptures at the other end. They went through the full repertoire while Arteta’s men kept the home side at arm’s length for 10 minutes.

There was a scare in stoppage time when Zinchenko got sloppy and Kane forced Ramsdale into a save at his near post and a moment of confusion when Hojbjerg went down in the box after shooting wide from the resulting corner. It looked for a moment like referee Craig Pawson was pointing to the spot but it was in fact a goal kick. Phew.

Second Half

In need of a goal, Sp*rs came out on the front foot. Kulusevski curled over in a warning from the Swede and Ramsdale parried a rising Kane drive. The England international then made a terrific block with his left foot to deflect a Sessegnon effort for a corner. It was backs to the walls for the Gunners. Kulusevski tried another curler. Again it went wide.

Arsenal still looked dangerous on the break and Nketiah came close to getting on the scoresheet with a cute turn and side foot effort. It was too close to Lloris who claimed cleanly. In the build-up, Romero, who was already on a yellow card, went through Xhaka and really should have been sent off. Craig Pawson bottled the decision.

Kulusevski continued to be a threat down the right against Zinchenko but the defence, particularly Saliba and Gabriel, looked solid. As Sp*rs committed more men forward, spaces opened for us to use the pace of Martinelli and Nketiah to stretch the game. The latter really should have killed the game off but couldn’t beat Lloris after being played through on goal by Xhaka. His first touch was a little heavy and the Frenchman was quick off his line.

Xhaka fired over a free-kick before Arteta switched things up, removing the booked Martinelli and sending on Tierney to add further steel to our left flank. As the game ticked into the final 10 minutes, Sp*rs mounted another wave of pressure that required real focus. Substitute Richarlison fired straight at Ramsdale and Son had an effort deflected over the bar.

Arsenal looked tired in the closing stages – hardly surprising given the effort put in – and the composure that had been a hallmark of the first half dissipated. Some tactical time-wasting and further substitutions helped break up the tempo of the game. As the clock continued to tick down, the travelling support grew louder and louder. The celebrations at the end were incredible.

We’ve waited a very long time for a win on Sp*rs’ territory. This one will live long in the memory.

First win away v THFC since 2014, scored in the 14th minute, 14 points above them. Could this season be our 14th league title?

Mayor McCheese

Brilliant

Vieiraera

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

GoonerJust

I bet Mudrik watched this game and cried. He doesn’t seem excited being forced to move to Stamford bridge

mikeoz

Agreed, don’t think he has smiled in any picture i have seen so far! The irony of him joining a club built on Russian money is not lost on me either haha

Fuzz

Nketiah to score the clinching goal then!

Maniac

Get in! Absolutely fantastic result away at Sp*rs, and a massive 3 points. Well done lads!

Comedian

We love you Arsenal, we do,
We love you Arsenal, we do,
We love you Arsenal, we do,
Oh Arsenal we love you!

Sagebrush

Anyone heard from Garry Neville?

Martin R

Yes he was doing the commentary and praised Arsenal for the way we played

Reality check

He thinks Arsenal won’t win the title, which is reasonable enough. However, he also claims Utd will finish above Arsenal.

karl g

Ramsdale back to his best and a superb performance from the whole team. 8 points clear!

Oddo

I’d rather win the league than sign Mudryk.

What a win!

PeteyB

What’s his Instagram doing tonight?

Emi Rates

Who gives a fuck what that greedy Chelski cunt is up to?

Oddo

I love you PeteyB
I love all you beautiful Arsenal lovelies.

ArsenesLongSufferingZipper

Go easy on the kid. Players don’t always “decide where they want to play.” Especially if you’re on like 3.5k per week at Shaktar.

Sakatatties

I actually think Shahkter have done him so dirty. He desperately wanted to join us but his greedy club and agent wouldn’t let him. Now he has to play for that shower and he looks gutted about it

Emi Rates

He made his bed. 8.5 years all in. He’ll be in his thirties when the oligarlacticos release him.

If he doesn’t like it, tough! His career stalls, tough! His conscience playing for a club where people love Russian oligarchs torments him, tough. He regrets not following his heart and playing for us, tough!

He chose it.

Sakatatties

Did he really though? He wanted to join us. Definitely external pressure to do the deal at that price.

Emi Rates

He SAID he wanted to join us but then he took the filthy Chelsea money and that’s that. No one but him could decide that in the end. Now he’s a Chelsea player for the rest of his career. Congratulations!

yes

didn’t Shakhtar lose a lot of their players due to FIFA’s ruling after the invasion? I could be wrong but if so I can understand them needing the money and don’t begrudge them it.

Boy Bastin

Of course we want the PL title, but on balance it would still have been good to land Mudryk as well I think – particularly after the time/effort going back now over months. Anyway, let’s see what Edu can do with alternatives.

karl g

Too right. Forget mid-table Mudryk and get excited about who we will bring in.

BillyKrystal

Chavs can have him and his atrocious neck tattoos.

Emi Rates

That neck tattoo says “Only Jesus” but he’s booked an appointment to have it altered to “Only Dollars” in honour of his signing for Chelsea.

Mikels Arteta

What a win
Fuck Richarlison!

BillyKrystal

Retroactive red for that, how can it not be?? And ban that shrimpy little spuds fan from the Emirates for life! I think he almost broke his toothpick legs trying to kick Ramsdale

PeteyB

I missed that.. What happened?

BillyKrystal

Ramsdale and Richarlison were jawing at each other after the final whistle. Richarlison pushed Ramsdale in the head. Then Ramsdale went to get his water behind the goal and a little child spuds fan tried to kick ramsdale in the back from behind. The single most pathetic kick ever attempted in human history. Then the fan hilariously fell backwards, but disappointingly didn’t smash his head on the railing.

Henkamp

Fucking sore losers, the lot of them.

myrtle

I guess they dared to not do, again.

Yankee Gooner

To be fair, all the Tottenham kicks were pathetic today.

PeteyB

Must have been a pathetic kick, in the post match Rambo said he was punched

Mark

the FA are soon to announce that they will be fining Arsenal for failing to control the opposition fans.

looover

And sprinting off like a little rat! But boy oh boy what a team we have in our hands. Simply beautiful!

Arsepedant

English authorities are really tough on that sort of thing. He’ll get a country-wide stadium ban for that, hopefully a lifetime ban, and he’ll be very lucky to avoid jail time. He’ll also have to surrender his passport when England are playing abroad.

Emi Rates

All for a brief moment of futility. Hope it was worth it. Cunt.

dr Strange

Brilliant. The best we have been since the invincibles.

dr Strange

Fuck the cunt that kicked Ramsdale. What a load of scum that tiny fucking lot are.

The scum breed them young.

Fabulous

I have a soft spot for Fabregas, Nasri, Adebayor, Van Persie days. But those f*ckers turned out to be snakes who won f*ck all for us. If this bunch wins us plenty trophies they’ll definitely be the best group post invincibles.

Henkamp

Good Lord, hogood is Gabriel?

And the think I like the most about him is that he is ready to get stuck in for his mates. Must be a great teammate to have in a fight. A fucking warrior.

No foot Norbert

5-0 to the Arsenal

Fenko

You mean 5:1. It was 3:1 at the Emirates

AusGunner

Tremendous. I look forward to Conte’s coping and seething.

PeteyB

Gabriel booking means he is suspended against ManUre? I think that is right. Martinelli also? otherwise, what a day. North London is Red!

Crash Fistfight

I thought it was Saliba and Saka who were on 4 yellows before today?

PeteyB

Maybe… I thought Gabriel was also in that boat… If only I was in possession of some kind of device that would allow me to find this information…

Fabulous

If true then missing them both is bad news. Manure in good form and winning streak atm.

C.B.

He’s only had 3 bookings, he’s fine to play.

PeteyB

Excellent. Thanks Google

Maniac

Gabriel picked up his 4th yellow card, so no ban against United, and Martinelli only his 2nd of the season – the previous one coming in our last game against Spurs lol.

Crash Fistfight

If they get cards against Man U, will that mean a suspension?

Chris

Isn’t it five yellows is a one match ban? I think it gets reset after the first half of the season though.

Crash Fistfight

Yes, sorry, I’ve made it confusing as I was talking about the players on 4 cards, not the 2 mentioned here.

Holdings New Merkin

No, it goes to 10 yellows and a 3 match ban on 18th, I think?

Arsepedant

Yes. It’s our 19th match of the season, so a fifth yellow will result in a ban. But all the card counts reset to zero after the Man Ure match.

Boy Bastin

If you’re right then it will be a good test of the squad (albeit at a bad time).

thankyou22

Is the cunt Bruno Fernandes suspended for the game against us? He is on 5 yellow cards after yesterday

Arsepedant

If that was his fifth of the season, then he will be suspended. Sadly, though, their next match is against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, so he will be available against us.

Fenko

No. It was BS and WS at risk of missing the United game. Thankfully, they survived

Martin R

Today was his 4th yellow this season and so he won’t miss Man Utd match

backsakacrack

SUCK IT

Danny

Fuck yeah

Gooner Z

Exclusive:FA to charge Arsenal for being Top of the league and painting North London Red.

Emi Rates

Massive win today! Well played!

Voldermort

I think we got lucky, we have caught spurs on a bad 120 year run

Brady’s bunch

This ☝️

Wengerball

Richarlison can stick his massive nose up Conte’s arse! COYG!!

Anon

Perhaps he does

Emi Rates

Conte loves it. That’s why he bought him.

Anon

Wasn’t for his goals anyway

Emi Rates

Or his looks.

assistantref

That pathetic excuse for a kick is the closest Spurs got to Ramsdale all night. Immense.

Brady’s bunch

Happy fucking gunners

Chris

Chapeau ladies and gentlemen. CHAPEAU!

William Nilliam

Easy Peasy

Duno

I fxcking love this game. Assured and controlled performance. Ramsdale chose the perfect game to come out impeccable. Onto the next!!! COYG!!

Jack

Loved Arteta getting the boys away from rucking and instead directed them to our fans. What a man

PeteyB

Rob Holding in there too doing his leadership thing

Paul

We are so good! Barca and City esc or better?

Arun

What happened at the end? TV here did not show it. Arsenal staff was pulling Xhaka and Ramsdale away from the scene. Anything to be concerned about?

Jasonissimo

Spuds fan kicked Ramsdale in the back

myrtle

*tried to

Jasonissimo

No, he connected, which is why Ramsdale was upset. He was turned toward the field so didn’t see. Said a fan punched him. Security pushed the fan down off the advertising board and he scampered back up into the seats.

Yankee Gooner

I don’t think he actually made contact. Sp*rs fan, after all,

Hair on Ram's Tail

Richarlison hit Ramsdale in the head. He should be suspended 3 games but the FA is too busy trying to figure out how to fine Arsenal so they will do nothing about it. Then a little twerp Spuds fan ran up behind and kicked Ramsdale in the back, then ran away like a little rat bastard because he knew Ramsdale could break him in two with one slap if he felt like it. Security didn’t appear to bother following the scummy rat as he scurried away (at least from what could be seen on the video.) The punditry storyline about… Read more »

Emi Rates

Clearly it’s Ramsdale’s fault that some random spud cunt kicked him in the back.

Obviously Arteta had no business controlling his players during the ensuing fracas.

Fines galore!

Collibosher

The little pip-squeak should be identified and forced to watch Sp*ds every home game!

Martin R

Yes the TV showed it clearly. Arteta pulled Xhaka away from trouble and Ramsdale was taken away after being punched by a Spurs supporter. I shouldn’t think there will be any repercussions for us. At least I don’t think so.

Martin R

Kicked not punched.

PGunner

So happy right now. Yessssss!

yes

After this type of performance I will ALWAYS give my customary shout out to Gabriel Magalhaes – every pundit says he’s the weak link in the Arsenal defence, but no, he’s just a proactive defender who can handle the pressure of big moments and putting himself about. Stuck tight to Kane, made blocks, won headers, gave away a couple fouls yes but that’s what happens if you constantly try to get on top of the game. The man is BRAVE, and he’s almost always dependable – he’s a protagonist, and if we’re going to win we will need players that… Read more »

Danny

He is immense

Hair on Ram's Tail

With Zinchecnko playing up the pitch, Gabriel was left one on one against Kulusevski a lot, and handled him well, basically covering two areas at once repeatedly.

Eric Blair

He’s been a fantastic defender since he arrived, but was prone to losing his cool and making unnecessary mistakes. Respect to him and Arteta that they’ve obviously been working on it and coupled with the experience he’s been accruing means we’ve got an absolute monster defender on our hands!

Tomaury Bischfeld

Vieiraera

Mudryk who?!!!
Victoria Concordia Crescit!!!

Deano

Great win, Ramsdale was simply outstanding and the midfield trio in the first half were untouchable.

The piece of crap that kicked our goal keeper should be banged up.

Nice week off, be great if the Manchester clubs drop points in mid week.

TeeCee

Sp*rs supporter.
Probably did it deliberately, hoping to picking up a lifetime ban.

Fireman Sam

Partey and Xhaka were bossing the midfield. What a top performance!

Arsenal haven’t really beaten anyone important this season. They’ll get turned over by the first half decent side they meet. (Me, rehearsing for my Pundit 101 exams).

To be fair, we should have pummeled these mid-table losers like 5-0, but we did well enough to win comfortably. Hopefully we are saving some goals for the next couple matches against bigger teams.

Der32

Sounds like you graduated top of your class.

Alex

Amazing

Boy Bastin

Very good all round performance from the Gunners. I thought we’d probably share the points given recent results but Sp*rs didn’t look like pulling back from two goals down. Another plus was that we didn’t lose our cool during the game which could have happened in that atmosphere (although, apparently, Ramsdale lost his water bottle after the final whistle which was the cause of a mini-commotion). This eight points is the largest lead we’ve had so far in the PL and it’s a great comeback from the disappointing Newcastle game. Utd up next. They’re playing better now so we can’t… Read more »

*for us

Weebgooner

Amazing win today. Ramsdale was superb too! COYG!

Badaab

hearing about a new 60k seat capacity place that serves nothing but battered chicken? can anyone in london confirm?

chepetin

Also a lot of squawking and feathers getting ruffled, especially at closing time

Tomaury Bischfeld

Think there are quite a few bottles to choose from as well

OkochaDaMan

Oui! It’s right on the menu: Coq au basket.

Arsepedant

It’s going to be the second best stadium in the Championship, right behind Everton’s new one.

Eric Blair

Plucked

Beef

In all seriousness if a fan can get on and kick a player it’s a serious security concern

Emi Rates

I’m sure some pundits will find a way to blame Arsenal and the FA are probably preparing fines as we speak. Ramsdale will get two, one for being pushed by Richarlison and a second one for being kicked by a spuds fan. Arteta will get fined for controlling his players in the ensuing fracas and I guess the rest is a scatter gun approach to anyone in Arsenal colours.

Beef

It’s also a serious relief to finally flush that toilet

Fireman Sam

Spunts can’t be trusted to be able to manage toilet bowl security. Useless muppets.

ThatgoonerguyGuy

Thomas Partey!!! Arguably(surely)our most important player. He controls the game with his passing and defensive work too.maybe quiet 2nd half, but that guy is amazing with his awareness and always showing for the pass

Chris

He was immense once he settled down, had a couple of iffy passes early on but that volley… 😍 Oh man

Emi Rates

Shit! Had that gone in. Just imagine. Goal of the season!

Riddler

How Lokonga isn’t mirroring Partey’s technique despite seeing it up close baffles me

Brady’s bunch

When on song I don’t think I’ve seen a better defensive midfielder in the league.

Qwaliteee

Yes! Fucking get in! Superb performance from the boys, completely blew those muggy cunts away in the first half and then control the second half. Martin Odegaard has got to be the player of the year, never mind a contender: he was simply world class today. Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka completely bossed the midfield from which our forwards could work their magic. At the back, we looked composed and confident and Ramsdale had perhaps his best game of his Arsenal career thus far. I duly hope the relevant authorities find that sad little Tottenham turd trying to kick Gabriel… Read more »

Brady’s bunch

I think you summed it up there

Shirish

It was a mature performance. Odegaard, Saka, Ramsdale were superb along with Partey

Paul

We were really good at headers?

Sheldon

We were outstanding. That was a statement victory.

Okester

Was in the stadium tonight. I’ve had Spurs colleagues telling me how great the atmosphere is there. What a load of bollocks. Didn’t hear a peep out of them for 90 minutes with loads leaving early.
Only disappointment was both goals were down the other end from where the away fans were. I’ll watch them close up on MOTD when I get home 🙂

Arsepedant

In other news, the goalpost Partey hit has a broken splint and is expected to be out for 6-8 weeks.

Wozfe

They say form goes out the window for the derby, but this was not the case tonight. This was a performance and a result that reflected our superiority over Spurs.
