Carl Jenkinson trained with the England squad today and although he’s not been called up for action it seems it’s a ploy by Roy Hodgson to show the youngster his international future is not Scandinavian alongside teammates like Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Jenkinson’s mother is Finnish and he’s represented Finland at underage level. Earlier this summer Finland coach, Mixu Paatalainen, visited Arsenal to discuss a call up to the national side but no decision was made.
Today England had a session at Arsenal’s training ground and Jenkinson was invited to take part as a precursor to full inclusion in the squad.
Roy Hodgson spoke earlier this month, explaining why the youngster hadn’t been included this time.
“On this occasion, we decided to keep Jenkinson up our sleeves, but he’ll be very much in our thoughts when it comes to the next friendly match.
“After speaking to Arsene I am also conscious that his rise has been meteoric.
“He’s only 20 and it’s nice to temper things a little bit, but he wouldn’t be out of place in the squad.”
With Bacary Sagna soon to return after a broken leg it will be interesting to see how much game time Jenkinson gets and whether or not that will be affect his chances of an international call-up.
I’m not sure how comfortable I feel with Jenks being called up to England. He should probably focus on his Arsenal career for now.
I think the interllul gets to him too. Seeing your mates leave for international duty and him ofcourse staying behind. The kid wants to play regularly!, he said it himself and perhaps England/finland might just land him his wish……. Does “land” appear too many times here?
He already said before that he doesn’t want to think about playing for England of Finland for now, and will save it for summer or so.
Something to the effect of “I will think about what’s happening now so that can wait.”
There is of course nothing wrong with him angling for the prospect of the England national team, but he’s not going to neglect Arsenal.
I’d love to have another gunner representing the country. Along with Gibbs, Jack, Ox and Walcott there could be a good Arsenal core to the team in the future. I’d rather they waited with Jenkinson though, otherwise it’ll just a matter of time until Stuart Pierce starts trying to call him up for the Under 21s though… prick.
Jenkinson should definitely opt to play for England – it’s much easier than getting into the Finland national team.

I’m not even an Englishman, I’m a colonial cousin from Australia but..
Jack, Gibbs, Ox, Walcott, Jenkinson.. this English contingent of my beloved Arsenal has me pretty interested in the English national team at the moment. (this and the fact that the current Australian side is full of 30+ dinosaurs who need to be replaced if we are ever going to progress on the International stage.)

If he wants to choose England, he should wait until Cashley and Terry retire from international duty. If I were him, I’d choose Finland. Guaranteed a starting spot (meaning he’ll be getting called up for more competitive fixtures and less meaningless friendlies) and Finland is a pretty awesome country. With players like Johnson (overrated because he plays for Liverpool), Walker (overrated because he plays for Sp*rs), and Richards (overrated because he’s English) all already established to varying degrees in the national team and competing for places, Jenkinson’s involvement with the English national team would mostly be restricted to meaningless friendlies… Read more »

If he does opt for England then we’d have five of ours as possible starters (Jenkinson, Gibbs, Wilshere, Ox and Walcott). With half the team from Arsenal that might just rekindle my interest in international football.

At least if Jenks plays for England, home games would be in London and not in Finland, so he wouldn’t have to put up with the additional travelling.
I like the idea of him playing for England. It sure is a huge change for Arsenal where we were often criticized in the past for often having zero English players in the starting XI. We now could have Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wilshere, Gibbs, and Jenkinson in the England starting XI.
It’s a no brainer for me, the two best RB’s in England are Jenks and pains me to say it K Walker… He should definitely play!

“Nordic” may be more accurate, but Finland can be included as part of Scandinavia when one is speaking geo-politically due to their Norse ties and history.
Finland is really not a part of Scandinavia, neither culturally nor geographically. It’s a part of the nordic countries, but Scandinavia is a “narrower” term. With that said and clarified, I hope Jenks plays for the English national team if he continues to develop.

Jenkinson has really been a revelation this season. I think most people had written him off after some of his poor performances last season, especially the one against Manchester United. But how he has risen from there. It is almost like the rise of the Phoenix!
He certainly will get his England call-up.It is a matter of when rather than if. But, he has not admitted if he will actually choose England has he? He might choose Finland, who knows?
