Report: Sheffield United keen on Auston Trusty

Arsenal defender Auston Trusty is closing in on a move to Sheffield United, reports The Telegraph’s Mike McMcGrath.

Despite getting his first Gunners minutes on the recent tour of the USA the centre-back is deemed surplus to requirements at London Colney and will be allowed to leave.

Recruited from the Colorado Rapids in January in January 2022, Trusty spent last season on loan in the Championship with Birmingham City.

He made 47 appearances in all competitions and impressed so much that he was voted the club’s player of the season by supporters. On receiving the award, he made it clear his next target was game time in the Premier League.

Having been promoted behind Burnley, Sheffield United can offer the US international exactly that.

The Blades had hoped to tie down Iliman Ndiaye to a new deal but his imminent departure for Marseille means they are on the hunt for a replacement.

A season-long loan is mentioned by McGrath but other sources suggest a permanent deal for £5 million could be in the offing. The latter would see the Gunners double their initial outlay.

In the last 24 hours, Trusty’s compatriot Matt Turner has also been linked with a move away from the club. Nottingham Forest are said to be keen on recruiting the goalkeeper who could be sacrificed if Arsenal make a concerted effort to sign David Raya from Brentford.

Turner made seven appearances for the Gunners last season but expressed frustration earlier in the summer about not playing more regularly.

It’ll be interesting to see how he gets on in the Premiership. He did so well last season that I’d be inclined to loan him. He could be worth way more than £5m in 12 months time

Mkh

Agree. The Raya deal also makes more sense if Turner is heading to Forest.

Academy players are sold by our rivals for far more than this! Time they showed us the money!! Our fringe players have to be worth 15m quid at least!! Not the derisory bids for holding, trusty and the tall chap that’s at Monza for 6m pounds…played more than 30games despite being stabbed last season….and no one is shy to quote us 40m for the next average Joe!!

Crash Fistfight

£5m is chump change. If they sell him for that much, they need to include a 50% sell-on clause. Any bang-average defender who plays for someone in the PL/Championship gets sold for at least double that. Hell, we sold Kristian Bielik for more than that, for a decent season in League 1! Trusty was Birmingham’s player of the season last year, for crying out loud!

ChickPEA

Exactly. It feels a bit like when we sold Mavropanos for £2.5m to Stuttgart while knowing he was talented, he’s now worth almost £15m and could end up at Juventus or Napoli next season. We have to stop giving these players away.

Crash Fistfight

I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought as much at the time. Same with Guendouzi (no matter how annoying he may be).

I find it annoying when fans try to justify the terrible sales Arsenal have conducted recently. I sympathise with them in relation to players like Pepe, who is paid too much for any club that would be interested in him, but some of the deals just seem like laziness or incompetence.

Ndiaye is a forward, what does Trusty coming in have to do with him?

Chuffy

If they are planning to use him regularly, they can buy him outright, instead of loaning him. He’s not a rookie, he played well for a poor team last season and even chipped in with a few goals. 20 million should be enough, but we could negotiate the terms like every other club. Lets not get ripped off here.

Funsho Patrick

Exactly! 20m….and you’ll wonder why someone with premier League experience like holding is getting bids of 8m pounds…. didn’t chambers even leave for free? We should stop playing around

Santi’s Thigh Grab

And what do you do when no offers come in at your £20m valuation?

Heavenly Chapecoense

Balogun and Trusty did exactly what was expected from them yet will be sold. Why did we buy Trusty to not trust him? What else should have Balogun done?

JCNY

Trusty was bought so we can flip him the way Man City buys players from NYFC (i.e. Jack Harrison) for profit

Ebo

Because seeing how Leandro is playing in preseason I’d much rather we Tross the process than put our trust in Trusty

The Beast

Because we have better players in the positions they play in. It’s not string theory really, just healthy competition.

Mikels Arteta

Guess he’s not trusty enough

Heavenly Chapecoense

Iliman Ndiaye is a striker. The article lets believe Trusty will be his replacement.

Celebration Police

With Arteta these days, you never know. He’s probably convincing them that Trusty is striker. 😂

Philly Gooner

Given the season he just had, £5M is only acceptable if there is a significant sell-on clause. I’d be more inclined to do another loan but I understand there is a need to raise some funds..

Arsemouth

Hope he thrives. He was a bit of a surprise American signing along with Turner.

Teryima Adi

Things are heating up.
