Wenger: where Jenkinson is now is fantastic

Arsene Wenger has admitted it was a tough decision to leave Carl Jenkinson out of Saturday’s game with QPR but has been quick to praise the youngster for the progress he’s made this season.

The return of Bacary Sagna gave the manager a selection dilemma and it was the Frenchman’s greater experience which won the day. Sagna put in a very good performance but Arsene Wenger admits Jenkinson, who will play tonight against Reading the Capital One Cup, has really given him something to think about.

“It was a tough decision, very tough,” he said. “The team was a bit low in confidence and I felt experience at the back could help. Of course Bacary Sagna has an advantage on Jenkinson in experience.

“But I am very, very happy and thrilled with what Jenkinson has done until now and he will play again this season of course.”

Having endured a difficult baptism at Arsenal, including that traumatic day at Old Trafford, Jenkinson was further hindered by a stress fracture in his back, meaning he missed out on a spell of first team football last season.

This time around, however, he took full advantage of Sagna’s absence to show the manager he’s got two right backs to choose from, something that’s not lost on Wenger.

“I would like to give credit to Carl,” he continued. “What he has done is extremely promising and he is so young, so where he is now at his age now is fantastic.

“Two years ago he was playing in League One, and where he is now is fantastic.”

As long as he’s fit Sagna remains the first choice at the moment, he’s one of the best right backs in Europe, but even he took time to praise the Arsenal supporting youngster who will provide real competition and add depth to the first team squad as the season goes on.

Carl is great,

adu ishmael

ya sagna is great when he return jenkinson should stay for some time.

Mooro

Been very impressed with Jenks. Good lad and top Gooner.

Sure he’s taken Sagna’s return in the way he should, and doesn’t see being dropped as some kind of Corporal punishment.

tonyboy

I see what you did there

Marty

Now we can say Sagna has more than a decent back-up. Maybe one of them will be pushed by Wenger to the right wing?

neutral

Maybe it was the opposition (QPR), but Sagna looked much better the Jenkinson going forward. I hope he can improve that aspect of his game because having a committed player like that at the club is, what should I say, Fantastic!

GWillows

Is tonight’s game televised?

Although it would be good to see Yennaris play, Jenkinson must keep playing, he has so much potential, don’t want him to slow down with the return of Sagna!
Up the ARSE!

TheSkins

it’s on Sky

Eddie_lsh

The boy (CJ) is young and talented! More evidence in tonight’s game against reading. This is my probable starting line up I think Mr. Prof. will pick and will have a change to win the game. Martinez Carl Jenkinson Djour Koisheny Miquel Frimpong Conquleen Thomas Eisfield S. Ganbry Theo Walcott Andry Ashavin Why I have chosen TH14 as the only striker is that he should show his abilities in this position as he has always requested the Prof. Lots of attacking talent in my starting 11 & i’m 100% sure this team can score 3 goalzzzzz to 1 I love… Read more »

“TH14 as the only striker”
If only *that* option were available to us.

Kenya isn’t shabby in the looks department. Neither is Tanzania Banange.

Oh sure…it’s always autocorrect…classy.

Waterboi

I hope these soundbites about Jenks have nothing to do with Sagna’s contract situations, no deal has been announced yet on that front.

Won’t be surprised to see Sagna leave this season, Groundhog Season.

Voldermort

He won’t leave in January but will be off at the end of the season, which is why I feel even more sorry jenkinson. But sagna is class, and will remain commited while he’s here.

typical tantrums!

jenks for left back against utd, if gibbo is still not fit ofcourse!

New guy

Santi for left back!

the only sam is nelson

playing a number11 at left back isn’t working out, so a full back might be better to be fair. just because it’s the wrong flank doesn’t make it the wrong position…

GunnerDareMacedonia

Put vermaelen on LB position put koscielny in the middle with per sagna as RB and we will have really solid defence and play the same tactic we played against liverpool away hit them on counter attack with cazolra walcott wilshere poldi I think it will work, unated always beat us at home when we play possesion game and they are the ones that hit us on counter attack why give them that when wenger is playing that tactic against much weaker liverpool side, plus that tacitc will work nice because at the moment they have a shit defence we… Read more »

Frog

Vermaelin can’t play lb. he’s been having a tough enough time playing cb this season. Last thing we need is Valencia tearing him a new one all day and shattering what’s left of his confidence. I do think he could use some time on the bench. Bring on koscielny me thinks.

Opata

I pray and hope Wenger keeps Sagna. That guy is very good and carl will have to improve more. Remember competition is good.

Lord Teddy Ears

And long may it continue this guy is a real talent but for me Sagna is one of our best players full stop and we must get him to sign on the line again.

Bobs

jenko is proof that having determination & putting in hard work > having raw talent but being a lazy useless git. That’s not to say that he isn’t talented, of course he is but i find its easier to relate to him then other footballers because he’s one of us, a gooner!

typical tantrums!

@blogs. sorry, but its just that he looks versatile enough to play both as lb or rb. santos just does’nt look like he can take the devil’s onslaught from that flank, besides his crosses are of better quality than what santos can provide, and the presences of industrious podolski will only add to the stablity of the left flank, all this ofcourse, if gibbs does’nt make it on time for the utd game.

Frog

Yet nobody mentions that maybe sagna could play lb? Remember him playing a few matches there two season ago and looking quite good. He is our best defender after all.

Nico

No idea why Jenkinson weren’t playing at left back instead of Santos. No idea.

Nico

And he is probably more versatile than people give him credit for. He has played at left back way more than once at Charlton/Welling/Eastbourne.

Nico

And his confidence is high and he’s definitely on form, which is more than what you can say for Santos. Triple posts suck, sorry.
