Arsenal have been drawn against Bayern Munich in the first knock-out stage of the Champions League.
The draw, which took place this morning, will see the Gunners host the first leg at the Emirates in February before travelling to the Allianz Arena in March.
Bayern, who reached the Champions League final last year before bottling it on home turf against Chelsea on penalties, have played Arsenal twice (over four games) in Europe’s premiere competition in 2000/01 and 2004/05.
The Germans currently have the edge in the head-to-head having won both their home games with the Gunners and having grabbed a draw in an exciting 2-2 at Highbury. Arsene Wenger’s only win over the Bavarian side, a Thierry Henry led 1-0 win in 2005, ultimately proved fruitless as we went out on away goals.
The draw sees Lukas Podolski return to Munich, where he spent an unhappy spell between stints at Cologne, and a chance for Per Mertesacker to shine in his home country. Unfortunately, it also means we’ll have to endure the antics of dive merchant Robben and Frankenwinger Ribery.
The dates for the draw have yet to be confirmed, more to follow.

In his defence he said a good draw, that doesn’t necessarily mean an easy draw! It would be an entertaining match which is one reason we love Arsenal right? and its definitely better than facing Shitlona.

Bayern Munich is better than Malaga, PSG, Dortmund and Juventus. So i don’t think we are lucky at all.

I’m surprised that people don’t seem to really rate Bayern here? They have been in 2 finals in 3 years and know how to go all the way (especially with the newly recruited), they know what it takes to play in a final. Their players also will want to react to last year’s drama, a wound that is still in them. Much stronger than say Real or Juve. Overall, Barca is still the team to beat though. Honestly, I don’t see us progress here.

People rate Bayern but we do actually have a chance. Our champions league from has been better (for the most part) than our league from this year.
Bayern Munich is a tough draw, but it’s doable. At least we’ll be up for it. With this Arsenal team, you just know that if we’d drawn Malaga, Valencia, Shakhtar, or Galatasaray we would have been complacent and endured a humiliating loss.
It could have been worse, granted it could have been better too but this is definitely winnable for us!

They’re third in the table and are 13 points adrift of Barca. They have been beaten 4 times so far this season (3 times in La Liga and once in the champions league).

This is worse than facing Barca in my opinion. You don’t just know what to expect from this German side. Has a strong tradition and presence in the UCL with technically gifted players. I hope the boys realise this and rise to the challenge.
Barca are currently unbeatable. Lionel in the form of his early life, beat them 2-0, but you just know they are still gonna getchya in the second half or in the next say 10 minutes.
Bayern fi me is okay, not a dream draw but okay, though the atmosphere at their ground scares me sometimes.
At least you know who Lionel Messi is. Do you know who Thomas Muller is? Does he look like he can kick a ball? But that guy is one of the most gifted players in the game. We have to be very disciplined to beat them. You loose concentration for a few minutes and you are screwed.
They are currently one of the best teams in the world at playing the possession game (they’re sort of a German version of Barcelona) and are strong technically, as well as being pretty scary on the counter. Gomez, Muller, Schweinsteiger, Lahm etc etc. That’s not to mention Ribery and Robben, who are oneof the best wingers in the world, although I think Robben could do with learning how to pass instead of dribbling inside and trying long shots. It’s not f***ing OK and we’re going to show a very disciplined performance to beat them.
Btw I’m scrolling down and I see a lot of people saying, “Bayern is easier than Borussia,” well, wake up, people, Bayern only has one loss and I think three draws from the first entire half of the Bundesliga, They’ve let in less goals than we have, they’ve only let in 7 in 17 games and scored 44. It will be hard, but bayerns main threat is from the wings and our two full backs if fit for the game should be able to keep them under wraps.
The interesting stat I read somewhere was that in this year’s last 16 there were eleven teams who were not there last season. It makes our qualifying record that much more incredible (even though we should have won the group!!).

See everybody else’s comments. Bayern are so far out of sight right now the Bundesliga is almost absurd. They’re also smarting from last year, losing the final on their home soil. They’ve pulled out all the stops to bring in quality (sometimes pulling a little too much lol), but they’re incredibly deep, and incredibly talented. This will be a tough but entertaining draw.

Mertesacker would never be first choice against Dante or Boateng, even van Buyten from the bench would be ahead of Mertesacker! In normal cases, it’s an easy win for Bayern!
I don’t know why everyone is so worried. We were always going to play a tough side.
But atleast we’ve got German players which will mean we almost can’t lose. Plus the important thing to get this morning was a home draw. The home advantage will help us.
We were always going to play at home first – it’s actually advantageous to play the home leg last, so we’re at a slight disadvantage. We can still do it, though.
The problem is, I don’t see us keeping a clean sheet in the first leg. Not leting any goals in is crucial if you start at home.

I’m a Rex member based in Belfast hoping to get over in the new year for a home game. I know that for every Premier League home game over 2000 tickets are held back for red members. Wud the same apply to the Munich home game or any CL knockout match? I rang the ticketing line but was just told to ‘watch the website’. for future games!!
