Arsenal to face Bayern Munich in Champions League

Arsenal have been drawn against Bayern Munich in the first knock-out stage of the Champions League.

The draw, which took place this morning, will see the Gunners host the first leg at the Emirates in February before travelling to the Allianz Arena in March.

Bayern, who reached the Champions League final last year before bottling it on home turf against Chelsea on penalties, have played Arsenal twice (over four games) in Europe’s premiere competition in 2000/01 and 2004/05.

The Germans currently have the edge in the head-to-head having won both their home games with the Gunners and having grabbed a draw in an exciting 2-2 at Highbury. Arsene Wenger’s only win over the Bavarian side, a Thierry Henry led 1-0 win in 2005, ultimately proved fruitless as we went out on away goals.

The draw sees Lukas Podolski return to Munich, where he spent an unhappy spell between stints at Cologne, and a chance for Per Mertesacker to shine in his home country. Unfortunately, it also means we’ll have to endure the antics of dive merchant Robben and Frankenwinger Ribery.

The dates for the draw have yet to be confirmed, more to follow.

Pretty good draw. Is this our first game against muchen?

What's my name?

It usually helps to read an article in full before responding. Never mind……

goonero

Ah,

Knitted Character

he meant muchen not bayern you knobjockey

Yeah yeah yeah

Let’s face it, anything other than Barca is a step up! Let’s not kid ourselves, we were never gonna win it, so if we’re gonna lose let’s do it in style.

No team will have every single thing go their way the way Chelsea did in many years to come. To soften any bitterness just lick the old chops at the Madrid – United draw. What’s that Van Persie you little cunt???

big balls

Get ready for a spanking.

1st leg = 1 – 3
2nd leg = 3 – 1

Bayern 6 – 2 Arsenal

Leaf Snatcher

I wish to share some of the thumb downs with big balls.

That headline should read: Arsenal to exist to Bayern Munich in Champions League.

Arsenal players, I love them but they’re going to have to take down from their Christmas trees the balls of steel they hang up far too early and kindly reattach them to their nether regions.

If we wish to win the CL that is.
That and it would work wonders for the plummeting caused to my mental and emotional constitution every time we lose a game we should win.
Which is all of them.

GUN

Big balls is a spurs fan with small balls. Read his comments in recent articles.

Santi's Sack

Fuck off, you might have big balls but you’ve got a micropenis. At least we’re in the Champions League.
Hope you’re enjoying spursday nights on channel 5 and continue to for many years. Forever in our shadow.

Vinayak

In his defence he said a good draw, that doesn’t necessarily mean an easy draw! It would be an entertaining match which is one reason we love Arsenal right? and its definitely better than facing Shitlona.

L

FFS, why are we always so unlucky?

goonorhea

It was always going to be a tough draw. Look at the other draws-
Galatasaray v Schalke
Celtic v Juventus
Shakhtar Donetsk v Borussia Dortmund
AC Milan v Barcelona
Real Madrid v Manchester United ( yaay ! )
Valencia v Paris Saint-Germain
Porto v Malaga

L

Bayern Munich is better than Malaga, PSG, Dortmund and Juventus. So i don’t think we are lucky at all.

Witoldo

If we had won the group, we would have potentially gotten Galatasaray. Or Real Madrid, I guess.

goonorhea

Seriously underestimating Dortmund (topped group with Madrid in it) , and Juventus ( 49 game unbeaten streak recently).

L

Dortmund and Juventus are good teams, but bayern munich is better.

Attasmani

I’d say Dortmund and Juve are on the same level, and so is The Arsenal, no need to fear bayern

big balls

We are so lucky that Bradford were not in the draw

AFC

I’m surprised that people don’t seem to really rate Bayern here? They have been in 2 finals in 3 years and know how to go all the way (especially with the newly recruited), they know what it takes to play in a final. Their players also will want to react to last year’s drama, a wound that is still in them. Much stronger than say Real or Juve. Overall, Barca is still the team to beat though. Honestly, I don’t see us progress here.

Come on Arsenal!

COYG

People rate Bayern but we do actually have a chance. Our champions league from has been better (for the most part) than our league from this year.

Bunburyist

Bayern Munich is a tough draw, but it’s doable. At least we’ll be up for it. With this Arsenal team, you just know that if we’d drawn Malaga, Valencia, Shakhtar, or Galatasaray we would have been complacent and endured a humiliating loss.

goonero

It could have been worse, granted it could have been better too but this is definitely winnable for us!

gooner

That’s what the bayern general manager said

growler

Lets do it arsenal!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lets show them the real arsenal!!!!!!!!

SZ_Arsenal

If we do beat Bayern we are just going to draw Barca next round lol

THEREISBEARCUM

Could have been worse.

What if Bradford had been in the draw?

Goona13

We can beat them. No probs.

wengers furrowed brows

touch wood

Fairly recent Gooner

F*ck you United, hahahahahaha.

Gary

Real Madrid aren’t doing that well at the moment.

They’re third in the table and are 13 points adrift of Barca. They have been beaten 4 times so far this season (3 times in La Liga and once in the champions league).

I would rather face them than Bayern Munich to be honest.

Des

Madrid than bayern?. You are obviouslu nuts. Bayern proved to us that they are beatable (bate 3- bayern 1). Real madrid on the other hands attack like no team I have ever seen before and their quick ball movement against arteta.? I dont think so.

If we can get a result at emirates even a 1-0 while completely shutting them out, I reckon we could well do the “impossible)

Mr. T

Yeah, right. How many times Arsenal won agains Mou team, smarty?

Master Bates

They have that greasy haired cunt , you know that second best player in the world , He can expose any defences weakneses and ManU have one of the weakest defences.

It’s better we are playing a team that plays OUR football ,Kick and run teams always perform against us like Milan last season

Gary

I think you lot are severely under estimating Bayern Munich. They’re 2nd in the UEFA Coefficient Rankings… http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/uefarankings/club/index.html Real Madrid are 4th. They have reached the final in 2 out of the last 3 seasons. Of course Real Madrid are a great team. They have a good manager and the second best player in the world. However, it’s a fact that they’re not doing that well at the moment. They’re almost as far adrift off the top of La Liga as we are in the Premier League. We have knocked out Real Madrid before. We have never knocked out Bayern… Read more »

Gary

One other thing that I forgot to mention.

Guess who knocked Real Madrid out of the Champions League last year…

Yes, that’s right. Bayern Munich.

Bear in mind also, that this was when Real Madrid were flying. They were sitting pretty at the top of La Liga and looked unbeatable.

wengers furrowed brows

R Madrid are hunting for the CL trophy and I am not saying this …but all the Spanish footie specialist have been taunting this year as the mourinho’s final trophy for the madrid before he joins manutd or some other club.

I hope madrid shoves it down the RVP’s throat, anyways RVP never showed up for us in CL and I dont think he’ll do any better for the manure.

lordgunner

and MU even if they are first in the PL arent really impressive either.

Des

Yeah Bayern knocked out real madrid. Then chelsea knocked out bayern…so by your so much better football knowledge chelsea can beat real easily. Look here sunshine, Real madrid are a much better team than bayern, they command attacking qualities that could very well hurt arsenal. Talk about Ozil and ronaldo exchanging quick infront of the long but slow legs of mert. Or a burst by maria down gibbos wing, or a ronaldo thunderbolt after verm does his old trafford misques. Attacking teams will prosper against us coz we never pack the friggin bus, we always attack only madrid are much… Read more »

Witoldo

Doom. We’ll paying for blowing a two-goal lead in Germany plus sending out a makeshift side in Greece.

Bucks

I actually dreamed about this match last night. If we turn up it is a match I really want to watch.

L

hahaha, Where is your trophy now Robin??

remember the invincibles, because we aren't good anymore

where are your trophies van cunt? where are your trophies van cunt?

lordgunner

check the table in the PL maybe .they are closer to win something than us

L

True, arsenal will probably not win something this year, but i don’t watch arsenal to see them win trophys. I watch them because i love them, and they have always played entertaining football.

Hopefully the Manure cunts won’t win something either..

Jockie

@L
Yeah, but why not combining good style with success?

L

yes, success is a bonus, but watching Arsenal is good enough for me, i love them i would support them if they won the premier league 10 times in a row, and i would support them if they played in league 2..

I hate disgusting man ure and man shitty supporters just demanding their teams to win trophys for them. That’s disgusting cause this supporters is not even singing while winning. Gloryhunting shitsupporters!

chimasacker

This is worse than facing Barca in my opinion. You don’t just know what to expect from this German side. Has a strong tradition and presence in the UCL with technically gifted players. I hope the boys realise this and rise to the challenge.

Des

Barca are currently unbeatable. Lionel in the form of his early life, beat them 2-0, but you just know they are still gonna getchya in the second half or in the next say 10 minutes.

Bayern fi me is okay, not a dream draw but okay, though the atmosphere at their ground scares me sometimes.

chimasacker

At least you know who Lionel Messi is. Do you know who Thomas Muller is? Does he look like he can kick a ball? But that guy is one of the most gifted players in the game. We have to be very disciplined to beat them. You loose concentration for a few minutes and you are screwed.

prhyu

They are currently one of the best teams in the world at playing the possession game (they’re sort of a German version of Barcelona) and are strong technically, as well as being pretty scary on the counter. Gomez, Muller, Schweinsteiger, Lahm etc etc. That’s not to mention Ribery and Robben, who are oneof the best wingers in the world, although I think Robben could do with learning how to pass instead of dribbling inside and trying long shots. It’s not f***ing OK and we’re going to show a very disciplined performance to beat them.

prhyu

Btw I’m scrolling down and I see a lot of people saying, “Bayern is easier than Borussia,” well, wake up, people, Bayern only has one loss and I think three draws from the first entire half of the Bundesliga, They’ve let in less goals than we have, they’ve only let in 7 in 17 games and scored 44. They are more than ten points higher than Borussia in the league. The Borussia which pretty much dismantled Man City and topped the group with Madrid in it, and they are almost 20 points higher than Schalke, to whom we threw away… Read more »

leftback

If you don’t know who Muller is, you must’ve been living under the rock for the past 5 years. Any real football fan will know who Muller is as he has been spectacular for his country and club.

prhyu

another btw,
I’m not going, “urgh we lost, we’re out of the champions league again…Wenger OUT blah blah the team is shite(although yes, the team is a bit below par in performances lately, except for against a weak Reading side but which still doesn’t take away the fact that we played good football)” No, I’m saying “I think we’re going to have to be realistic and say it’s going to be tough for us.” (FM Lol)

Comedian

Gotta take revenge over them for not beating those chelsea scums.

Fairly recent Gooner

Those Chelsea scum knocked Spurs out, which led directly to them losing their most influential player. Catch 22.

Mikel Artekkers

If the chavs could do it last year, we can do it this year.

leftback

The big difference is CFC had back four comprised of thugs who bullied their way with constant cheating. Our back four are too fragile.

Javis

Tough draw, only PSG or Malaga you could consider easier draws, the rest are all playing so well at the moment. 2nd leg away from home is never easy..need a win at home for sure..

gooner in Manchester

We have got a good away record so far this season

wengers furrowed brow

PSG?? really?? zlatan will eat our defence raw and actually evey top quality forward can make mince meat of our defence. Our defending is still in its embroynic stage and very fragile. Arsenal has to park the bus and hit on counter and be extremely disciplined as any military can be, if we really want to reach the finals. Two banks of four has to be impenetrable and hit them in counter with tracer bullet like speed aka theo, Ox, santi, poldi &/or giroud. We are the super under dogs for the rest of the CL games. So mega discipline… Read more »

KenyanGooner

Bring it on MOFOs!! We are the ARSENAL!!!

Fatgooner

Shit draw, just I knew it would be. At least it’s not Barcelona, but this is the second worst option.

We shouldn’t be in this position right now. If we had won that last game then we would have had a much easier team.

Fuck it.

Aussie Bruce

Does it really make much difference playing them now or in the next round?

Fatgooner

It sure does, cobber! You see we might get an easy team in the quarters – like either Porto or Malaga. Now we won’t even get the chance.

Yeah yeah yeah

Fatgooner relax max, what’s done is done, bring on the Munching. We’ll just end up drawing Barca in the next round, big deal.

Los Polandos

Jesus, Fatgooner, you remind of my late granma: either “ohmydearmydear it’s raining i’m bound to get pneumonia this time and the flood, the flood shall come” or “ohmydearmydear it’s sunny it is inevitable that all this sun will give me melanoma and crops, crops shall burn”. Do you ever see any positives in life?

Rishi

We can beat them! If we show up! COYG!!

Ryan

Well, why not? Love the Champion’s league for throwing up fixtures like these. Besides, the Allianz is really a brilliant modern-day theater for football.
Bring it on Munchen! We’re bayern for your blood!

peter

It will be hard, but bayerns main threat is from the wings and our two full backs if fit for the game should be able to keep them under wraps.

DC

The interesting stat I read somewhere was that in this year’s last 16 there were eleven teams who were not there last season. It makes our qualifying record that much more incredible (even though we should have won the group!!).

Personally I am happy to play Bayern. We will beat them!

Oregon Gooner

Would have liked Malaga or Juventes but at least we didn’t get Barca.

Nevertheless Bayern is going to be hard.

We can’t do what we did last year against AC Milan and dig ourselves a 10 foot grave to pull ourselves out of on the second leg.

COYG!

Yeah Right

Going to be two fantastic games. Looking forward to it!
To be the best we’ve got to beat the best anyway, so why not start against Bayern? In my opinion we have the qualities to beat every team on a good day.

Arsene's Bored Banker

That is it then.
mark my words.

Xenon

a season defining tie for arsenal….

Xenon

that comment doesn’t mean we’ll fuck it up….your dislike suggests your fear that we will….
i think we will reach the quarters and then it will come down to luck as it does in club competitions…however, a positive result can have a positive impact on our league run…and also….fuck you

Xenon

sorry for the profanity….some of us in the states wake up at 4:15 in the morning to watch the draw of the team we love

Jonipu Silava

Arguing with yourself eh? Lol

Gary

A lot of the bigger names have been drawn against each other. There will be some big casualties early on this time round…

Man Utd or Real Madrid will be out.
AC Milan or Barca will be out.
Arsenal or Bayern will be out.

Bayern are a good team but I’m looking forward to it. I’m fairly optimistic.

Gandalf

I think its a decent draw, definetely not impossible.
Fingers crossed Poldi will give them hell!

A twat with a keyboard

Finsbury Park Gooner

LOL @ Frankenwinger!!

santi

Can anyone explain me why AC Milan could only draw FC Barcelona ? :O

Fatgooner

Because they couldn’t draw a side from their own country or the side they played in the group stages.

Arsenal_SouthAfrica

Then why couldn’t they draw manure..?

naughty noddy

More precisely, at the point when milan was drawn, on the unseeded side, there was still Real, Valencia and Porto. ie. 2 spanish teams… On the seeded side, there was still Manchester, PSG, Barça and Malaga… ie. 2 spanish teams

Seeing as 2 spanish teams can’t play each other at this stage, Real/Valencia HAD to play Manchester/PSG… That left Milan with Malaga or Barça, BUT Malaga was in their group… SO, Barça was it.

Arsezilla

I’m not sure if I should be happy … Oh #fxk It .i believe in this squad && surely if we got some proper good signing this jan. we can sent the Germans back home.

Rad Carrot

Not the best, not the worst.

Bayern are easier to play than Barca and Borussia, currently. They’re unpredictable, but then so are we, when we turn up.

We can certainly beat them, at least give them a good game. If we can stop them from scoring at the Emirates in the first leg, then we’ve got one foot in the next round.

Should be a great couple of games, whatever happens!

phelan

See everybody else’s comments. Bayern are so far out of sight right now the Bundesliga is almost absurd. They’re also smarting from last year, losing the final on their home soil. They’ve pulled out all the stops to bring in quality (sometimes pulling a little too much lol), but they’re incredibly deep, and incredibly talented. This will be a tough but entertaining draw.

At least I don’t have to see those godawful Barca jerseys for at least another round.

A Yank

Yeah, I get the sense that everyone around here is lowballing Bayern… BUT, as we saw with Spartak London last year, league form doesn’t always correlate with CL performance.

Pride of London

why is everybody so fearful? we are Arsenal and we will beat them

Peter

It’s not so much “fear” as it is realism. Yes, I’m hopeful that this Arsenal side will bring out its A game and deliver an upset. But let’s be clear: if Arsenal does get past Bayern, the emphasis will definitely be on the word “upset”. Speaking with brutal honesty here, I think we have maybe two players who would get into Bayern’s first team ahead of the current starters: Mertesacker would be a first-choice centre-back alongside Badstuber, and Cazorla would keep Kroos out of the starting line-up. That’s it. Neuer, Lahm, Alaba, Martinez, Schweinsteiger, Müller, Ribéry and Gomez are superior… Read more »

gooner in Manchester

realism in this case is pointless.

At the top level of any sport, you should count on mentality and belief. Class is always there. Form can change.

@Peter

Mertesacker would never be first choice against Dante or Boateng, even van Buyten from the bench would be ahead of Mertesacker! In normal cases, it’s an easy win for Bayern!

The Lady Eowyn

I don’t know why everyone is so worried. We were always going to play a tough side.

But atleast we’ve got German players which will mean we almost can’t lose. Plus the important thing to get this morning was a home draw. The home advantage will help us.

Rad Carrot

We were always going to play at home first – it’s actually advantageous to play the home leg last, so we’re at a slight disadvantage. We can still do it, though.

Lasagna

The problem is, I don’t see us keeping a clean sheet in the first leg. Not leting any goals in is crucial if you start at home.

KidKnockout

Shit just got real, Wenger spend some money brother.

ontheup

Tough draw; but who are Chelsea and ManCity playing?

COYG!

Jamesy Boy

I’m excited for this one already….
Only 2 months to go

FFS lookin at the comments by some gooners on here ud think they are spurs giving up before we even get there. Grow some fuckin balls and get behind the team! 1 Arsenal. lets go get em

Adam, Watford

Some Spurs fans are already thinking we will lose, without question.

Although that may not be an anti- Arsenal thing in particular. I think that is just a default position for them though after so many years of getting there hopes up and having them dashed in various competitions !

gunn cabinet

I think it is good that we have drawn Bayern Munich. I truely have a good feeling about this, even at this time when we are nor playing out best football. But Bayern Munich – or any other team for that matter – can be beaten by Arsenal any day. I like that we drew Bayern, and we know we have to be switched on fo the whole two games. Malaga – and these other unpredictable teams are dangerous. We did not lose to Bradford because we were that bad, imho; but Bradford are a team on a roll in… Read more »

I’m a Rex member based in Belfast hoping to get over in the new year for a home game. I know that for every Premier League home game over 2000 tickets are held back for red members. Wud the same apply to the Munich home game or any CL knockout match? I rang the ticketing line but was just told to ‘watch the website’. for future games!!

Not the worst draw out there and definitely winnable IMO.but they probably have the most balanced and deepest squad(with quality) in europe. Looking forward to it with fair optimism COYG

You can’t really go out on away goals when you win 1-0 at home, can you? We lost 3-1 in Munich then.

Matin

Agreed, we got knocked out cos we didn’t score enough goals in the 2nd leg. Blogs got it wrong there.

Can I just say look at where we are. 13th season in a row getting to this stage of the competition. Having been living on a shoestring all these years. Where’s Chelsea (win it one year and choke at the group stages the next, pathetic)? Where are City (“we’re a new team in the CL…” weak excuse)? F-off the pair of you and your Arab/Russian billions. Not the best we could have drawn, but could get worse. People need to get real too, Bayern is a very strong side, tactictal & technically. Runner up 2009-10 & 2011-12. Heavily experienced too. Does matter who the fuck we draw, this ain’t the third round of the league cup, if we had drawn Malaga then someone like bayern or barca would be waiting next round.
If you seriously think we can win this competition then it doesn’t matter who we get. We can’t be playing the likes of Bradford in this cup whatever happens.

Dave

It isn’t too bad. but you have to consider, that if we want to win the champions league, which is unlikely, but still possible, we are going to have to play the big teams at some point. May as well get Munchen out of the way early.

Eric Irish gunner

True plus we’ll proberly play better against a bigger team and not take it easy

these games will take place in feb & later…by then the Gunners might be in a much stronger position then they are now…new players might also be on board to strengthen the team.
