Arteta and Diaby: we knew it would be difficult

After last night’s 2-1 in the Champions League over Montpellier, both Abou Diaby and Mikel Arteta say that the quality of the French champions was no surprise to them.

Despite a poor start to the season, the home side showed why they won Ligue 1 last season with a dynamic second half display which saw Arsenal clinging on to their slender lead.

“We knew it would be a difficult game,” said the Spaniard. “They were champions last year and they deserved it because they played really well. After we conceded the first goal we responded with two nice goals.

“In the second period they caused us problems but we were able to stay calm to get the three points.”

And Arteta’s praise of the opponents was echoed by Abou Diaby who also urged patience over Olivier Giroud.

“The goal was to get three points tonight, and that’s what we did. We are very happy even though it was not easy. Was expected that they’d worry us because that they have good players, and they play good football.

“They attacked dangerously but in the end we managed well Olivier Giroud has not scored but he must be patient. He is a bit frustrated but when he scores his first goal, it will be the beginning of a long series. Now we must continue our good run.

Diaby also felt he was walking a bit of a disciplinary tightrope, saying, “I got my yellow very quickly [20 seconds] and I felt the referee I wanted to get the red card out, but in the end I managed to handle it. “

I remember us coming up with different line ups prior to the game, thinking it would all be a bed of roses. Heh, trully arsene knows

Ebouefan

On the other hand, the shitty second half was due to tired legs all over the pitch. Some rotation could have worked but it doesn’t matter now.

Kirk

By all accounts it was very humid out there. And also, Montpellier played their league game on Friday, giving them a days more rest than us – both factors making them a lot fresher than us at the end.

I’m not sure we would have got three points with a weakened team (by that I mean players who haven’t played regular)

Mills

Wanted to ask if anyone else thought the fact that our players kept slipping (and theirs to a lesser degree) played a fact in the way the game panned out. It did seem like we were the more tired of the two teams, but the ball didn’t move as quick and some quick turns resulted in a chunk of the turf coming up rather than a big step forward …. Maybe just me though

What Diaby did in our box was utterly reckless and could have cost us 2 points easily.

There was also another moment where I felt the ref could have given him a second yellow card.

When he’s good, he’s brilliant. But he’s prone to some inexcusably stupid mistakes as well (like against the Kant Quoting Cunt for example. If he had stayed on the pitch, the barcodes would never have scored 4).

We can’t afford to make as many individual mistakes as in the past!

Tenacious Defence

On the bright side, he got away with it and we got the three points. Hopefully he’ll have learned from the experience.

vladiziv

really similar game to Borussia last year…
we were really good in the first half and hung to our lives in the second half…

still.. great 3 points on an away trip..

welile

Now for man city on sunday, even a point would be lovely.

Bobolancs

Let’s just hope that City keep defending the way they have so far, instead of playing for a 0-0 like they usually do against us.

Fingers crossed we get the “Liverpool Away” version of Diaby and that he puts the willies up Yaya.

manfredi

WHAT?

Im quite sure we can win that game. We have proven that we are tough side to score against, we let in 2 goals this season, one on a pen, another with a fumble.

Im quite sure we will score against city cause they will come at us, and that gives space to our speedy midfield.

Artetaaaaaaaaaa!!!!.

To do it again at citeh?. would be absolutely lovely.

He's got no hair but we don't care...

As would a brace from Girooooooooooud!

Arsene

I don’t think this guy can hit a barn door right now, maybe later.

lala

GOSH….i fuckn love arteta with ma soul….

Nasal Ether

Well, Mikel is the kind of man that … well, if I were a woman, and I were not around, I should be in love with Mikel.

CUNT

we won fuck all the the negativity.seasons ago we were criticized for not winning now we are criticized on how we are winning. Crazy world indeed!

ramgooner

it’s called analyzing a performance.at a club like arsenal there is constant pressure to attain perfection.we don’t settle for mediocrity.

Agent 419 ITK

Nothing wrong with analyzing your mistakes in order to learn from them and not to replicate them.

It has nothing to do with being happy or unhappy with the result itself 😀

giddygun

It was an opportunity to see how we would react under incessant attack. Its part of football to be strong and impenetrable at such times. And we were, so I’m extremely impressed with our shape.

Finsbury Park Gooner

I’m grateful for 3 points away from home in our opening European fixture, but I wouldn’t say we were impenetrable. It was only down to some awful finishing on their behalf that we didn’t conceed more. Tired legs played a big part I’m sure, certainly in the 2nd half, but if we’re so careless against Citeh we may have to pay for it.

giddygun

Its true they ran us ragged in the 2nd half, but they didn’t score. There’s always a bit of luck when a team is pressured that long and there’s no goal. Barca, with all their might camped in Chelsea’s half both in the 1st leg and second half 2nd leg last Uefa, but didn’t score. Same bit of luck thing goes for all good teams. You get it initially, then it becomes your forte later.

David

Second Half
Wasn’t great but first was good. We had a easy game against Southampton I think it is better to have a hard game
Before city so that te players don’t go into game thinking its easy amd everyone rolls there sleeves up and earns a performance just like at Liverpool. Personally I love winning who cares if it’s lucky tough or perfect lets win the players we have more times then not it will be almost perfect!

west belfast gunner

Great to se Podoski and cazorla linking up well again in the first half, those pass and go one twos are lethal

Steve Bould's hairdryer

Podolskiiiiiiiiiiiii !!!!!!!

Cygan's Anal Beads

Montpellier fucked us up last night. This is the perfect warm up for Man $HITT¥. The players will not want to taste the bitter pill of defeat that Montpellier was trying to shove down their throats.

MAN $HITT¥ I hear you bleed blue and if that’s true get ready for an ocean of abuse.

waitressinthesky

Arteta = best Arsenal spokesman ever? He may be one of the only players who Arsene doesn’t panic over when they open their mouths, fearing they’ll say something stupid.

giddygun

In other words, most of our players talk stupidly (you mean).

innovstar

Adrian Durham stepped over the line today… the man is a poor wank!

Kelvin Lukah Bikeri

I understands that in champions league there is no small team and this is what should ring in our Arsenal lads always. We already have three points from last night game and let our boys approach every agame as if it’s a champions league final where a Cup is already on the table. By that, no team will stand infront of Arsenal, am sure. Go ahead Gunners as team and victory will follow you.
