Match Report: Reading 2-5 Arsenal (inc. goal highlights)

Arsenal enjoyed another goal-fest in Berkshire as they routed Reading 5-2 with a fine display of attacking football which saw Santi Cazorla grab his first hattrick in English football. Lukas Podolski opened the scoring for the Gunners early on before the summer signing from Spain extended the lead to 4-0 with three finishes from close range either side of half-time. Reading scored a quick-fire brace through Adam Le Fondre and Jimmy Kébé as they threatened a comeback but despite the wobble Arsene Wenger’s side calmly finished the job with a late Theo Walcott effort.

Seven weeks ago in the Capital One Cup Arsenal’s second-string started at the Madejski Stadium like a team of drunks and paid the price by deservedly falling four goals behind. This evening, a side featuring only Theo Walcott from the crazy 7-5 win, meant business from the off.

Within 90 seconds Oxlade-Chamberlain hit a low drive which forced a fine save from Adam Federici then Walcott flashed a free-kick wide from long-range. Noel Hunt nearly headed in a corner as Reading showed a little bite but by the time we opened the scoring on 13 minutes few would say we didn’t deserve it.

Gibbs and Podolski worked their way down the left side, the former whipped in a tasty ball to the onrushing German who took one touch and finished low. It was incisive play with a decisive finish to match. 1-0.

We looked confident on the ball in the centre of midfield, played with zip and created chances at will. Cazorla and Podolski both flashed wide before Walcott, played clean through by the little Spaniard, was denied when bearing down on goal one-on-one with Federici.

There was a weariness in the voice of the home support as they watched their nervous team repeatedly give away possession. A scrappy Gibbs effort was blocked and Wilshere bounced a volley goalwards which was tipped over.

The Royals looked all over the shop and although Vermaelen had to be on his guard to clear a ball across the Arsenal six-yard box there wasn’t much threat to deal with. On the break we looked like a Wenger team of old. One beautiful move saw Walcott bound forward and loft a fine cross field ball to Cazorla although on this occasion the final ball from the midfielder was lacking.

Finally we got the second our pressure deserved. Arteta spread play to Podolski, the German went outside the challenging left-back, looked up, crossed beautifully and Santi Cazorla of all people headed home. The little man looked as baffled as anyone that he’d used his bonce to score. 2-0.

Two minutes later it was 3-0. Wilshere fed Walcott who stood the ball up to the back post where Gibbs headed back to Cazorla who swivelled on a sixpence to punish Reading again.

Podolski and Chamberlain nearly added a fourth before half-time before the referee brought the curtain down on our most dominant 45 minutes of the season so far.

The question in the second half was whether Arsenal could keep up the momentum. We certainly tried.

Chamberlain fired over within seconds of the restart, then a couple of moments later a Walcott cross nearly ended up in the back of the net courtesy of a Reading defender. The England international then curled a pacey effort past the post from outside the box as he tried to justify his selection in the central striker position.

Cazorla and his dancing feet tried a Maradona impression but ran out of steam, Mertesacker nearly got in on the act from a corner then the BFG spent a couple of minutes fiddling about as an unorthodox central midfielder. We were having fun and it was fun to watch.

Thankfully there was an end product to celebrate too. Chamberlain, Wilshere and Podolski all got involved as the German teed up Cazorla to tap home for his hattrick. It was a special goal – one we’d been trying to score for about five years. 4-0.

Despite being all over Reading we still managed to concede a typically sloppy goal. A poor ball by Gibbs in the direction of Wilshere was snapped up by the home side, fed to Adam Le Fondre who promptly rounded Szczesny to reduce the lead. 4-1. There was a slight worry when our number 10 lay in a crumpled heap having slipped, but thankfully he was alright.

The lead was then halved as we furiously fingered the self-destruct button. Another ball straight between our centre-backs was latched onto by Jimmy Kébé and he slid it past Szczesny with a minimum of fuss. 4-2. Game on? You bloody well hoped not.

Attack seemingly being the best form of defence we went on the front foot again. Federici denied Cazorla as our number 19 eyed his fourth before Wenger tried to calm things down by throwing on Ramsey for Chamberlain.

With 11 minutes remaining and with Reading building in confidence we thankfully grabbed a spirit-crushing fifth. A delightfully poised bit of work by Cazorla, the man-of-the-match by far, worked space for Walcott who razor-sharp switched onto his left foot and tucked home. He deserved his goal. 5-2.

The goal restored our dominance and we pulsed forward again and again. Podolski slashed wide at the near post before the removal of Cazorla and Walcott for Coquelin and Giroud saw the game peter out.

Despite the brief ten minute scare in the second period it was a thoroughly enjoyable performance by the Gunners, our best attacking showing in the Premier League since the 6-1 win over Southampton, and a fine riposte to the critics who rightly rounded on the side following the defeat to Bradford. Importantly the three points take us up to fifth, two points behind Sp*rs, as we get ready to tackle the Christmas schedule.

big balls

NO gervinho and ramsey = better performance (simples)

Momo

actually if you look at this game statistically, when ramsey was off we conceded 2 and when he came on we conceded 0, we won ffs so support our players and stop copying what that cunt Piers Morgan says

big balls

actually we conceded 2 goals because Gibbs made 2 mistakes. Ramsey played 17 minutes of the match and you judge the game on that ? Why dont you work at Talksport . Btw, who is Piers Morgan ffs ?

Jb

@Momo – Piers Morgan is a cunt !!!!!! I cannot stand reading to the shite that comes out of his mouth on twitter. He thinks he’s fuckin god cos he’s got a poxy interview show in the US. Comeplete cunt

Cygan's Magical Left Foot

what more prove do you want???? we have NEVER won a game this season when Forehead or Ramsey started together in the team NOT even against Bradford. Those two NOT The Arsenal standard, just like Squad, Sheeshaman and some of the dead woods we have been putting up with for the last 8 years hoping one day they will come good as we are waiting now for no football brain Ramsey. Those two players among others are lower to championship standard players. Just our manager is our in a mission to prove the whole world wrong and he is the… Read more »

gooner odst

while on the subject of the blame game, I blame Denilson for not scoring 6…

Cygan's Magical Left Foot

While we are waiting the next coming of Arsene, give him 5 more years to build a young team and Ramsey will be good (Only this time the slogan is BRITISH youth project to play the Britishness to buy more time).

Oh wait, you said that in 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I feel like I am back to the future or some people NEVER learn.

Des

Arsenal fc : turning on the style since Arsene wenger. Cazorla scored a header! Eh?. Get in. The first spanish to score a hatrick in the league….Amen.

Roll on the week.

sJ

*third spanish, first spanish for us however

Vinayak

Quite surprised even Cesc never had a hattrick for us considering how influential he used to be to the team.

C

I think the point is that putting a win down to Gervinho and Ramsey’s absence is silly. They’ve both had some bad games, yes, but the team’s recent poor performances isn’t just their fault.

big balls

Agreed. However playing them does handicap the team.

Momo

exactly! I’m not saying we didn’t concede because of Ramsey coming on but you can’t attribute a win to players because they were on the pitch.

paddymac

Got to be honest, I didn’t miss Gervinho’s frustrating, aimless forward play one little bit tonight. We seemed so much sharper in the final 3rd without him.

Jb

@C – are you having a laugh ??? This team is FAR worse with Ramsey and Gerv playing in it. They are simply not good enough to start for Arsenal FC, fact. Like AdosS, Chamakh, AA, they are simply not good enough.
The team won on their own merit, but keep those 2 players away from the starting 11 as far as fucking possible.

Gooner

@C Truth hurts.

Brownman

your balls should turn blue with your moaning. this is a match report about a game that didn’t feature one player and barely had the other, which we won, playing brilliantly – yet you choose to give them (dis)credit for this. Super “fan” (shakes his head).

big balls

Yep, we played brilliantly because they were not in the team.

TomJ

We played brilliantly because we were committed from the first minute, and because we were playing a poorer team that went for it too. Lets enjoy the victory, and well done, but lets see if we can put the points on the board over the next few games

wengers furrowed brows

shut up and enjoy the fourth goal…please keep your moaning about players when we lose. Wrong time bob.

when the planets align in the correct way …we see such goals in a season. Fantastic stuff!!

Runcorn Gooner

Haven’t seen a Wenger out posting yet.Well that’s a surprise.
The boo boys have hidden away yet again unless they give me thumbs down !

EDgooner4ever

Good performance! I really hope Walcott stays and I think he deserves/deserved his chance to play down the middle… if he feels hes ready Wenger needs to give him a chance. Fifth now! 2 points of sp*rs come on!

kierangibbs'legs

I thought we just played against spurs? 5-2 ver 3.0

collegegooner

“5-2 To The Arsenal!” should be the new song, it’s become a far more regular occurrence!

Gunner From Another Mother

Not only do I think Walcott played well up front, but i think just having him there with the option to play an early ball over the top for him did us a lot of good. Usually the opposition know we probably won’t be doing much of that, but with him up top they have to be cautious of it, leaving a bit more room around the box for our midfielders. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Santi got a hattrick from MF under these circumstances

Adam, Watford

I thought he drew the defenders well and created the space for Podolski’s and Santi’s goal.

I think he’s worth another go up front. He deserved his goal, too.
Well played, matey !

Jim Deen

I agree – Theo drew defenders, but so did Ox and Podolski. Their speed and penetration forced Reading to spread their attention, and Santi was left to poach. I think if Rosicky had been in place of Santi, he would have had a few chances too, so it is not down just to Santi. This is a pretty potent formation, imho, and one that we should see again over the next few weeks.

paddymac

I even saw Theo use strength and hold the ball up tonight, like a real centre forward! Thought he did very well.

I guess now he’ll get his chance to regularly play up front, start scoring a shit load of goals then bugger off to one of the rich clubs 🙁

Matt Jarvis' Uncle

Wilshere and Cazorla seemed a lot more free with Walcott worrying the central defenders with his pace but it could be all down to Reading’s ineptitude. It’ll be interesting to see who Wenger starts against Wigan.

Gearoid Kelly

With Walcott through the middle, we played less long balls and also it seemed that Cazorla was really pushing up as a second striker tonight. But maybe that’s just because Reading only had 2 centre mids an that freed him up a bit more than normal.

L

Yes i’m so happy after this game. Oh santi cazorla

Vick

cazorla scored a header?? Surely it must be christmas.

C

great header too!

Gooner Al

Merry Christmas!

Thomas B

Thank you Santa Cazorla. Christmas came early this year.

Frog

It’s usually me that comes early.

Crevzyyy

Quicker passing, quicker movement, quicker pressing, a whole lot of heart across the whole team and Santi is an absolute gem. COYG!

Tenacious Defence

Not only quicker, but BETTER passing and options provided. Particularly liked how the Ox popped up in good positions and made smart runs into space.

Vick

Ox’s passes were dissapointing to me. Makes space for himself but something is still missing from him. He’s not at his best but still miles better than gervinho. I like gerv in his new position though, the BENCH!!!!?

SZ_Arsenal

Santa is coming to town, i mean Santi haha!

Loved how he took the ball at the end, he was looking around if anyone saw him. He so deserved it!

Most likely the end of Gervinho, thankgod.

Xavier

HOW did you get this up so quickly? It was on Twitter barely a minute after the match! Always one step ahead, Mr. Blogs.
Anyway, up until the 2 goals conceded, it felt like I was watching the Invincibles again. I love a free-flowing Arsenal. Hoping for more to come from this team! #COYG

arseblog

It wasn’t me. Thank @aallensport.

gooner

that’s exactly what TGSTEL said.

Xavier

Apologies. Cheers, @aallensport!

geeee

blogs that was eerily quick.

Last-arse

Happy Christmas Gooners. Santi delivered the prestents early!

Seb

Ramsey misplaced a pass #wenger out

Gooner

Why should Wenger go now? Ramsey has been doing that all year

Comedian

We read them well.

Last-arse

Happy Christmas Gooners. Santi delivered the presents early!

geeee

by the way, did anyone notice a coming together between vermaelen and sagna after the full time whistle?

Vinayak

Nope, What exactly happened? Just hope its not a biggie.

geeee

i dunno, the camera just caught a split second, seemed to be some sort of argument, never mind, i hope they were discussing the defending for the two goals! i suppose it shows that fabled ‘spirit’ and ‘mental strength’

Memphis Gooner

Sagna tweeted earlier and said he was upset with a Reading player, not TV. He said there is no problem between him and TV.

ryan.gay.4afc

Maybe it was just about conceding the goals, hopefully it was nothing.

Kops

yeah I saw that too, wonder what happened?

paddymac

Talking of Tommy V, we were quick to criticise him earlier in the season, and rightly so because he made some howlers. But I think his game has been steadily improving, and I reckon he’ll be showing us what a world class defender he is soon enough. Credit where credit’s due.

stonedwasherman

onwards and upwards!!

Last-arse

We really needed this win after the heartbreaks we’ve been through! It’s refreshing!

Fan

I think Walcott did well as our central man. Hope he stays.

SZ_Arsenal

If you heard Martin Tyler he was 100% spot on about Walcott. He said that Walcott was playing so well because Arsenal enjoyed most of the possession and that he was getting plenty of touches and that against stronger opposition he may not fare well.

I would still choose Giroud over Walcott in the middle for now in the BIG games.

paddymac

Maybe, but I don’t like the way we resort to desperately lumping it into the box towards the big man sometimes. I think Giroud has a lot of potential, but we have to give him more quality chances, not just throw the ball in there aimlessly – which we’ve done on many occasions this season when we’ve run out at attacking ideas. Although Reading were very poor and allowed us a LOT of the ball, I thought tonight’s formation was much more balanced.

markgooner27

I disagree , its not as if Theo was static, he’s always moving and creates extra space for others. He’s always giving defenders something to think about. He has already scored against some of the best teams in the world, Giroud’s a good player but he’s a little predictable and doesn’t have Theo’s pace. We should stick with this team for a eun of games imo.

Tenacious Defence

In aftermatch TV interview he said “it won’t happen overnight” twice when asked about playing centrally positively affecting his contract situation. Don’t know if he was referring to the contract or playing centrally. Maybe both.

TRob13

He won’t be here – seriously… it really does not take a “long, long time with these things”. How many signing since he was first approached… 3, 4, 5, 6, 7? and it will be 2 more signed before long. He will not be here. I’m just not happy with all the kissing of sir Theo’s ass recently. Sure he can play, but he isn’t our best and it seems that everyone is bending over for him to try and make him think that way. None of his corners amounted anything dangerous: Cazora does better. His free kick wasn’t close:… Read more »

Gandalf

5-2 is just our result!

Voldermort

The whole team had a much better shape about it, people ain’t going to like it but without Ramsey losing the ball and gervinho running into blind alleys the team had time to settle a play football More like the arsenal football we are used to, giroud isn’t a bad player but we benifited from not throwing balls into the middle in the hope something will happen, we were threading balls through cesc style, playing proper arsenal football. Hope arsene learns the lessons from tonight. We need a quality striker that’s runs onto balls it’s always been the arsenal way.… Read more »

Spooner

Wonder how good this midfield would be by now if Jack had gone through a pre-season. I know it’s only Reading, but they seem to be really starting to click (forgetting Bradford without Mikel).

Hope that means a better second half of the season!

Fatgooner

Excellent analysis, Volders. I don’t know if it was by luck or planning, but we actually looked better without Giroud. The Frenchman is a good finisher but his forte is putting away crosses. He doesn’t have the pace to play off the shoulder of his marker. With Walcott playing the Henry role we looked more likely to score, especially with the brilliant Carzola threading through those balls.

Walcott deserves more chances as a centre-forward.

TRob13

Except the Giroud makes a better central striker when playing against quality and size; and when players keep their runs so he can flick the headers on to them (as he is meant to be played) like the way we were playing at times earlier in the season.. I’m sorry, but Walcott rarely looked like he ‘would score’, yet there were a few times he looked like he ‘should’ score, and one of those times (good for him and the club), he did. Walcott when speed is needed, Giroud when size and control is needed – makes for a good… Read more »

Giroud and Walcott

We have 3 potentially lethal combinations of strikers but they’re not ever tried. Any of those 3 I mentioned with these 4 behind them would be good to see for once in a 4-4-2

OHHH SANTI CAZORLAAA

Big Chief from Antarctica

Let this be the Sp*rs of last season. SANTI!

Big Chief from Antarctica

*turning point

SZ_Arsenal

oh and in the last sentence of the report it should be sp*rs. you shouldn’t be saying naughty words uncensored.

Big Chief from Antarctica

Ha

great minds think a like but who knew at the same time?

£oyalty for $ale

All I want for Christmas is 3 consecutive victories by AFC.

Bucks

Not happy with the period in which we conceded two. Very happy with the rest the match.

Rad Carrot

Thanks Blogs, superhuman effort to get this out so quick before Sky Sports can even give a paragraph report.

Good performance, but we’ve got to stop being so sloppy.

Ah, to hell with it. I’m going to worry about that tomorrow; tonight, I’m glad we won.

COYG

Walcott looked pretty good up top I must say

Young Gunnerr

Thomas Vermaelen & Bacary sagna handbags

all is not quite as it seems!

Gandalf

Noticed that too, hope its not something big.

Xxxrob

Excellent attack marred slightly by 2 sloppy goals. Santi Walcott and podolski were excellent tonight just a bit scary who keen we are to give opposition sides a sniff.

2 wins in a row tho, let’s get through December now

Pride of London

I love you Arsenal FC

Oregon Gooner

I got very nervous after that second goal went in for a bit

ooooooohhh santi cazorla! brilliant stuff from the little man.
Anyone seet Verm and Sagna going at it after the game? Gibbo had to pull sagna away. wonder what that was about…

Mooro

On the 5th day of Christmas, Arsenal gave to me
a 5 goooooaaal win,
4 nil up
3 more points
2 goals against
And a goal for Podoooolski.

Cam

3 for Santi*

munya

Great a couple of signings and some canny management away from doing this against every team

Raghib

Now that’s the kind of game Arsenal are famed for. Ruthless in attack, with a few defences lapses. But a very satisfying afternoon indeed. Santi, take a bow! COYG!

big dawg

Thought Wenger had gone nuts when i saw no Gervinho in the line-up. Proved me wrong.

Rezatron

Our best 11 by a long shot in my opinion.

Des

I’m in a relatioship with Cazorla now.
He scores, he creates, he hatricks. He smiles his way to my heart. Santi the magician.

Mate Kiddleton

Having both Walcott and Ox on the park gave us some serious pace to work with out wide. Fine crossing from Podolski too.

diefenbaker

Still think Ox should be doing more, passing and first touch still not there yet.

Awesome to see so many players finally getting into the box, Poldi had a good game.
Lets see us do more of the same against some quality opposition
(By that i mean the west hams and not the Mancs , these days)

What was that Sagna thingy going on at the end?

Cam

So great to see Arsenal playing well again, apart from the usual avoidable goals we gave away.

Can we please just keep playing against Reading for the rest of the season?

goontang

Wenger got his team right today.
The whole Theo Walcott situation is confusing though. I thought he played really well there tonight and his hold up play actually was quite decent.

Cam

He did miss that sitter when we were 1-0 up. I thought we were going to regret it, but luckily Santi took care of it.

Wenger shook his hand and smiled at him when he came off, so that’s probably a good sign.

Glory Hunter

I don’t know why he doesn’t ever go round the goalie in those situations, it’ll make him look even better!!!

neutral

I was impressed with the power of walcots shots, he had a snapshot right at the keeper that was particularly impressive. If his luck was on last night he would have had 3.

Not sure how much reading made us look good, dont care though.

A Yank

So…. anyone else have Newcastle flashbacks at 4-2?

Cam

I’m afraid I was more pessimistic than you and remembered when we were 4-0 down against them and for a moment feared this would be their revenge.

Rodders1971

Arsene should force Gervinho to watch the DVD of Santi’s finishing. On a loop for about a month.
Lots of positives tonight against a really poor Reading side, tougher game to come on Saturday but 3 points would take us above Sperz!

paddymac

Terrible Reading side, but we were sharp and finally had some end product. 5th place and 2 points off 3rd. Encouraging, let’s hope we can build on this now.

Trevor

Podolski actually played 90?!?

Nikki

One of the best first half performances from Arsenal this season. The kind of performances that make you think that this team could beat anybody. Quick incisive passes, lot of movements, pinpoint crosses, barrage of shots and clinical finishes. But it will need a thorough study on why this performance couldn’t be maintained for the whole match let alone a string of matches.. Is it the lack of focus? But isn’t this team one of the best in term of focus? Lack of energy? Hopefully the question could be answer and the problem is solved.

geeee

podolski is is so clinical anywhere around the box, be it crosses, shots. that control and finish was lightning quick!

i love zee Germanzz!

Seymour Cox

Anyone else think walcott up front terrified reading? they were so scared of his runs behind that they didnt really press our midfielders the way every other team has this year. Cazorla (amazing today), wilshere, and arteta had so much time on the ball they had no problems picking out passes and the wide players had more time to get into scoring positions. Gibbs really benefited from this as he had a fantastic game.

Witoldo

I think in general they were intimidated. We started out well early, put them on the back foot, made them scared to press us in midfield. The exact opposite of how we started at Bradford.

Arshavin's Moobs

That’s what we needed to see. Quick interchanging passes and movement off the ball. Well done boys, now let’s string several of those performances together.

Arsezilla

Loved every minute of that game although I must say I got a little scared when Ramsey came on.. But truth be told he played olrite. And so did the whole team.. Well disciplined, had each other backs. And for the first time I felt confident of the scoring when they broke or went forward !!!!! I can now go to sleep happy !!!!!

Lasagna

I’m starting to enjoy these 5-2 victories, keep them coming!

Bendtner's Ego

Good to see 3 points
Good to see many goal

Bad to let Reading back into the game with 2 sloppy errors. We cannot continue to shoot ourselves in the foot like this.

Fatgooner

Magnificent performance – except for that dodgy ten minutes. In the first half we looked like the old Arsenal, passing it beautifully and taking the piss out of what was an ordinary Reading side. We could have scored seven in that first 45 minutes. The selection worked well: no Ramsey or Gervinho = better football. Podolski and the Ox (who had his best game of the season) were both excellent and supported Walcott, who looked the part of a centre-forward. And Carzola was God. The only blemish was the bad two goals that we conceded, both due to poor defending.… Read more »
