Priest gives Jenkinson the shivers

Carl Jenkinson says he gets shivers down his spine when he hears the Champions League anthem on match days as it reasserts the fact he’s playing at the pinnacle of club football.

The music, which was written by British composer Tony Britten as an adaptation of George Frederic Handel’s Coronation Anthem ‘Zadok the Priest’, has been synonymous with UEFA’s premiere competition since its creation in 1992 but also resonates on a personal level for Arsenal’s right-back after his famous singer-songwriter dad sang it at his christening.

Speaking ahead of the Gunners trip to Germany, Jenkinson revealed that the tune, which features lyrics in English, French and German, was a constant feature of his childhood.

“I’ve learned and realised that the Champions League is just the pinnacle of football,” he told Arsenal Player.

“When I was growing up watching the Champions League, it’s the competition you dream of playing in.

“The build up, the song that’s played before the game that sends shivers down your spine, everything about the Champions League is just classy. It’s where you want to be as a footballer.

“I love playing in it. I’ve been lucky enough to play a few games in it, and I’ve enjoyed every minute. I used to go to games when I was younger, and I’d be at school telling my mates I’m going to the Champions League tonight – it’s just a big buzz.

“There’s such an aura about the Champions League. It’s a fantastic tournament and I can’t get enough of it.”

While Carl and his Arsenal teammates face an uphill battle if they’re to make the Champions League final at least one Jenkinson will be present at Wembley on 25 May after Jenko’s dad was selected by the FA, who are celebrating their 150th anniversary, to sing the anthem as the competing teams are presented before the game.

Arseblog News keeps its fingers crossed that results will see both father and son present at Wembley that night…unless of course Carl is a Muse fan in which case he’ll likely be at the Emirates rocking out to their progressive metal from the comfort of the Diamond Club.

I smell another genius attempt from Arseblog to trick the press in to thinking Carl’s dad is actually a singer. The reaction last time was priceless…

Idiot. Why would you write that here? It’s completely obvious to everyone in the know!

Gary

Because there are plenty of people who aren’t as ‘in the know’ as you obviously are, and who would enjoy the video.

Haha. Can’t wait to see which news site picks up the singing dad stuff and runs with it. The last time was priceless.

When I saw the headline I thought this was going to be another newsbreaking article about the paedophile cardinal. Sigh of relief. Probably for the paedophile cardinal too.
