He may have paired a ponytail with a moustache in the least rock and roll way possible, but for all his follicle faux pas David Seaman still represents one of Arsenal’s greatest ever keepers.
As such it’s interesting to hear his take on the current situation at the Emirates where the owner of the number one shirt, Wojciech Szczesny, is benched in place of Lukasz Fabianski, a man who looks almost certain to leave to the club this summer.
Speaking to Sky Sports about the manner in which he took confidence from his lengthy stint as the Gunners’ undisputed first choice stopper, the three-time Championship winning Yorkshireman highlighted that competition is healthy given the comparative lack of experience of Arsene Wenger’s current keeper options.
“When I was there, I was there for ages so it was great for my confidence,” reflected ‘Safe Hands’.
“Jens Lehmann was a quality goalkeeper. People remember him for being crazy but he was a quality goalkeeper.
“Since then, you’ve got a lot young goalkeepers coming in and it’s not easy for them.
“Arsenal’s a massive club and you’re under so much pressure all the time and it can sometimes get to the younger goalkeepers.
“I don’t know [if Szczesny will win back his place]. It’s quite interesting with Fabianski doing really well.
“He’s worked really hard since his injury and he looks totally different goalkeeper. But it’s great to have that competition.”
In other news Theo Walcott says he wants Arsenal to be consistent, while Arsene Wenger wants Theo Walcott to be consistent.
“We shouldn’t have to get a bad result and then perform well in the next game. It should always be there,” Theo told Arsenal.com.
“The guys have got it. Mentally, they are very strong. It’s realising how we cope when we come back from those disappointing results. We just need to do it every week – it’s as simple as that,” he concluded.
Arsene Wenger meanwhile, responding to suggestions Walcott’s lack of goals is down to a drop in motivation after sealing his six-figure weekly pay packet, has made clear that it’s probably got nothing to do with the cash and more to do with Theo being a bit average injured.
“I don’t think that is linked, especially with the fact that he has signed a contract or not. Because you can say as well he is more secure, he can express himself.
“I don’t see any difference in attitude in training. He is a guy who loves football, who stays after training, works on his finishing.
“He was just a bit less decisive. He needs that fraction of a second to make the difference. He needs his pace.
“In recent games he dropped a little bit. I think it was the fact that he got the muscular injury, so it was down to fatigue.
“At Bayern, he did not have the greatest game but he still brought the goal and he looks dangerous. Until recently he made the difference time after time. He will come back.”
As well as he’s doing, I still feel Fabianski will eventually turn back to his Almuniaesque ways..
That Seaman save in the FA cup…
Also that Lehman save against Raul! One of my most treasured moments.
@ aero mine was this really hot girl coming out of my room with her hair all messed and my mates had this look of ‘ lucky bustard ‘.
So you messed up her hair? No?
Yeah Seaman wasn’t bad, I suppose. Following in the footsteps of the legendary George Wood.
Yup.
First, there was Wood. Then came…
*gets coat*
Awesome, take a bow, that is top 3 best comments I have ever seen around these parts
There’s something about Szcz that you just can’t help but love.
I think Fabianski will stay in goal for the remaining games of the season, possibly then he’ll move somewhere else. I know that szszesny will learn from this, and if fabianski does leave we replace him with an experience keeper who can also act as a tutor for Arsenals number one.
Does anybody commenting genuinely beleive that if fabiankski leaves hell be replaced with experience?
I’d sure like to think so
If Fabianski is between the sticks for the rest of the season, then we’ll get a better price for him. I think he is a good keeper but WS has the chance to be a great one for us.
Fabianski will provide great competition for Szczesny. Both should stay and fight for top spot. As for Walcott, let’s just hope he’s past his Bambi patch and can see out the season as our top scorer.
I’d rather Gerv overtook him, given the number of goals *that* would involve. It’d certainly mean a top 3 finish.
Damn it! i was about to make the same joke but with jenkinson
I think fabianski is feeding of the confidence of his back four right now. He has done well enough but as far as potential is concerned we’ve seen what he can do. Szcz on the other hand has far greater potential and more long term. Let fab do his thing for now….
So theo stays after training. You always hear about people staying after training. I would like a list of the players that dont stay after training please
I guess I’m on d party of “pro-SCZZ Needs Rest”…. He felt too comfortable cos no matter what Don Vito can’t get d gloves as far as he(Woz) is fit. Fab was fab against Bayern, making point blank saves, Sczc might have fluffed his lines den. I think he shld rest till d end of the season. Let’s make a chunk bucks frm fab’s sale. As for walcott, I seal my lips!
As a kid I really wanted his haircut! The barber refused to do it 🙁
You were “barbered” by a sp*r then. Lucky he didn’t cut you!
