Positioning! genius! He doesn’t even look like he is doing anything in half Of the video Who cares if he is a little slow. You don’t have to be fast when you are in the right spot all of the time.
You’re right–it’s incredible how many times he intercepted passes. I wish we could surgically remove his brain and put it into Vermaelen’s head. That would be a fearsome defender. MWAA-HAA-HAA-HAAAA.
He’s one of few defenders in world football that have the awareness to pull off the classic tackle pass. Ive noticed it a few times but this vid proves how well and often he does it.
Another cracking video by the way!

I remember thinking when he caught so much flak: no-one who’s a regular starter for Germany is a total mug. He’s a quality, quality player, good foil for Boschielny.

Look at him sticking out that long, sexy leg of his preventing what was a certain goal/shot on goal. I wanna take him home.

Offtopic but the transfer market is becoming ridiculous. overpricing of players? and amazingly clubs dont care anymore, they will right away stump up the fee no matter how ridiculous it is. Here are a few transfer fees that are no way justified. £32m fernandinho (what has he done?) £32m Irralamendi (not a single appearance for the senior team and only 1 proper good season + too damn young £34 javi martinez (i mean come on, £20 at best) £50 falcao (he’s good but not that much) £63avani, £40 suarez etc with outrageous clauses. wtf Something needs to be done imo,… Read more »
I agree with some but Falcao is definitely worth the 50 because he’s probably been the 4th best player in the world this year. Javi Martinez was obviously worth it to Bayern but at the end of the day, a player is worth however much someone will pay for them.

A coach once told me: it’s far better to stand wisely than to run frantically. I remember this every time I see Per in action.

He cant run- he can just about jog but somehow he gets the job done. We gotta big f×××in german
Indeed, more than makes up for his physical limitations with his awareness, composure, decision-making and overall game intelligence.
Side note: as it happens, the evidence suggests that he can actually sprint pretty quickly once he gets going – his limitation is more about agility rather than ground speed.

Finally a defender who lumps it forward when needed. We did have a bunch of defenders who were too willing to play it out of defence under immense pressure but Mertesacker doesnt seem to have any qualms about lumping it into row Z when needed. Tactically and positionally very astute and works really well with Le Boss. Have always been a big fan. Heres to more of the same for the coming season. Up the BFG!
When needed mate. And I agree with you. He must have one of the highest pass completion rates for a defender. Doesnt miss alot of the passes.

When compiled so skillfully it’s easy to see what a great defender Per is.
I am really loving the theme/design of your site. Do you ever run into any web browser
compatibility issues? A couple of my blog audience have complained about my blog not
working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Opera.
Do you have any solutions to help fix this problem?

We have a ‘Motorcycle’
Runs slower than ‘Wheel-chair’
Magnet for the ball he has
Defends our ‘Arse’ with flair!
Hope he strengthens his partnership with Kos and provide much needed stability at the back.

Look at his legs. LOOK AT THEM.
They stretch the length of the pitch. Unbelievable. He’s like the Colossus.
Best part of the video is watching the reactions of all the opposition players as Per intercepts the ball again and again; they all throw their hands up in massive frustration. I can just imagine them screaming “What does it fucking take to get through?!” Brilliant.
He was one of four reasons why we went unbeaten and against all odds beat Spurs to Champs League, YET again. The other three were none other than Laurent Koscielny, Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey. At the beginning of the ’12-’13 season, who the hell would have predicted that. Love the spirit, strength and skill of these guys and pretty much of the entire team.

One of the most underared players of the premier league. The calming influence he has at the back, his distribution of the ball and brilliant timing makes Per one of my favourites in this team. It f***s me right off when messers Redknapp and co constantly criticise a player who has been exceptional for us this season. Long may the Koscielney and Mertesacker partnership continue. C’mon the Arsenal

Worth noting the amount of times Per plays the ball nicely to a team mate or otherwise knocks it out – for a squad that seemed so susceptible to fast counters and kamikaze defending, it’s really quite a joy to watch. He’s not perfect by any means, but then ‘complete’ defenders are like gold dust. That said, he’ll still bloody well do a damned good job.

and yet, there are bargains like aubemyang to Dortmund for 13m. BVB building great team with Henrikh (who hilariously spurned ‘pool).
