Walcott hoping to be fit for Villa

Theo Walcott says he should be fit for Saturday’s opening game of the season against Aston Villa despite his knee swelling up during England’s 3-2 win over Scotland last night.

Having been an injury doubt before the game with an ankle knock, the winger, who scored a very tidy first half goal at Wembley, surprisingly managed 75 minutes before being given a breather by Roy Hodgson.

Speaking after the game, the 24-year-old stressed that despite some discomfort he wasn’t overly worried about the prognosis.

“Hopefully, fingers crossed, I’ll be alright,” he told Sky Sports.

“I had to come off with a little bit of a swollen knee so fingers crossed I can rest up and I’ll be alright for Saturday.

“Everyone dreads pre-season so this is the most important time. This is a big year for Arsenal and myself.”

As things stand it looks as though Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere have both survived their respective Wembley cameos.

Of course, as expected, it’s not all good news following the international friendlies with Bacary Sagna apparently struggling.

I dread to think what the state of our team will be if both Walcott and Sagna are put.

TomJ

Jenkinson and Ox on the right

heroldgoon

Theo has become an integral part of this team, just seeing him out of the starting line up is enough to send me into panic. That’s how much he has grown….

Finding the net is not a problem for him anymore, I see him hitting 20 or more in the premiership. and that would be fantastic.

uler56

It’s going around on Twitter that Arteta got a knock in training and will be out of the game against Villa. Who could have foreseen all these injuries building up going into the season with such a small squad? Oh let me think maybe everybody

TomJ

Yes, if it was on Twitter it has to be true

uler56

Well not really but it is in this case http://www.arsenal.com/news/new

TomJ

So something on Twitter was actually true

Edu's Braces

I keep thinking im forgetting someone, like the squad can’t be this thin. Do 2 players per position in your head, its alarming

terence

This is gonna b another long and frustrating season for arsenal and the fans .I truly cant understand why we can’t close a deal in the transfer market .

Arsene's stylist

Why is this news? We have Sanogo, Higuain, and Suarez who can play upfront, or on the wing.

Auslaender

We signed Sanogo????

Arsene's stylist

Yes, and he is fit and ready to help us bridge the gap with MU, City and Chelsea. Like he did Auxerre last year.

TomJ

I feel really sorry for Sanogo. He is being made into a target, a scapegoat, it’s not right, it’s not the Arsenal way

Dark Stein

Course he’s a target, he’s a striker…

Tony Joseph

Sanogo Is Injured

Arsene's Troublesome Zipper

I hate to say it, but a part of my brain is happy about these injury scares. I believe, mainly out of my own desparation, having so many players unavailable will force the manager’s hand. Somewhat like how Monreal got signed in January after that whole spiel.

It’s never nice to wish injuries upon any player, but your own? This is what an Arsenal transfer window does your sanity…

Kenyangoon

Theo is a very likeable guy. Even when he was going through the contract thing, i still would have hugged him, given him a high 5 and asked for a photo if i met him. He is just such a nice guy

petits handbag

Hey gays, Keep the faith
Do we still say that?

BillyBatts

No

Hoogy

4 fit Defenders going into the new season….

Oh to be a Gooner…

HBK

Why am I not surprised? I mean this is’The Arsenal’.

archit gautam

“fingers crossed” he said, well my index and middle fingers have joined forces to become one single large middex finger waiting for new arrivals this summer, don’t count on it Theo, we are arsenal…

Rad Carrot

Well, it’s pretty much backs to the wall now. The manager and board are incompetent, so all we can do is cheer for the players and hope that they can come through having to play the 60+ games. There’s nothing else we as fans can do.

Rezatron

I can see Theo banging in 25 this season & I can’t wait for it to start COYG!

Denizo

Wenger should sign Gustavo if arteta had a knock.also because gustavo can play as a left back and central defence

TomJ

No shit Sherlock…

Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz

From Wolfsburg?

Irate

Updates… He just joined wolfsburg

@peterparker_78

Not best thing to wish but may be any injury scare may push Arse and Dick to get into action

higuain had an awesome goal yesterday. dzeko was killing us in Bosnia, I think he had two goals and looked great. we are so stretched its rally ridiculous that we refuse to get deals done

arsesicky

by ‘killing us in Bosnia’ do you mean dzeko scored 2 goals in Bosnia’s 4-3 loss to the US? Not exactly ‘killing it’ is it? he scored a kinda lucky rebound and then a consolation flicked header in the 89th minute. keep in mind that was against the behemoth of world football – USA.

Exiledgooner

As I recall they kept us pretty quiet in the group stage at the last World Cup. They’re not Spain, but they’re no slouches, them Yankees.

2013-2014 = 2003-2004

So Gustavo has apparently turned down both Arsenal and Barcelona to sign for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. Assume the logic is to boost his Brazil World Cup chances by being the undeniable 1st-team starter there. For the first time, Roberto Martinez has hinted that Fellaini might leave Everton. Heard the Bill Kenwright (Everton chairman) is still bent out of shape at the way ManUtd surrepticiously courted their manager David Moyes and has vowed not to sell any Everton players to them. The (what’s left of) optimist in me wants to think all the above points to Arsene Wenger paying GBP19mm… Read more »

Today is Thursday señor Gustavo, don’t keep us waiting

Morten

“Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger identified Gustavo as the midfield enforcer he needs weeks ago and was desperately hoping to see off competition from Wolfsburg and Rafa Benitez’s Napoli for his signature.

But it now looks a forlorn hope after Wolfsburg called a press conference at their stadium for midday, English time, today.”

Another one bites the dust…?

Morten

“Tottenham have completed the signing of Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue, sending their spending towards the £60million mark for the summer.”

and Tottenham keep spending while Arsene sits with his head stuck in his Arse! Funny how they kept their best players, got rid of the deadwood AND found some quality to buy… Might be harder to close the gap after Christmas this time around.

I had so much hope for 13/14 after the Newcastle game, now I’m going back into the fetal position to cry some more 🙁

Hank Scorpio

Assuming Theo is injured the side this weekend could be
Szczesny, Gibbs, Mert, Kosc, Jenk, Arteta, Ramsey, Wilshire, Podolski, Giroud, Ox sub: Fabianski, Santi (he’s traveling back from Ecuador), Rosicky, Akpom, Gnabry, Bellerin, Eisfeld
Sobering stuff

TomJ

I would kind of fancy that team to beat Villa at home. Opening day is often very unpredictable, but I can remember some years ago a certain Smudger Smith banging in 4 against the Villans on opening day. Hopefully Olly will do the same

Rad Carrot

Arteta’s out, mate. Picked up a knock. Gonna have to be Ramsey in the holding role, and Rosciky as the box to box midfielder.

Shitting bricks yet?

Crazyinsanegotnohiguain

Come on, Wenger. Work Dick hard over some signings!

Judgement day (once more)

Well this is fun, right?
Sagna out, Theo out, Arteta out, Santi has been flying to Mars and back, Sanogo (bless him) out…

Perfect timing for our young German to make his breakthrough, come on Eisfeld!

Tony Joseph

I thought Ramsey was out too.

Naija Gunner

I hope we get through this unharmed!

This people (wenger & the board) are making football irritating for us fans, I always check the net and news for update on signings to Arsenal.

Ooooh to be a gunner!!!!
