Per Mertesacker believes Arsenal have a ‘special’ team spirit at the moment and that the squad can be proud of the momentum they’ve built up considering the injury list at the Emirates.
Reflecting on the Gunners ascent to the top of the table following the 2-1 win over Swansea, the BFG noted:
“I can feel that everybody wants it and everybody is capable of doing more than usual so you can feel the special team spirit at the moment.
“We lost a lot of players at the start of the season and we have to replace four good wingers who can make the difference but you can see Serge Gnabry stepped in today [Saturday] and scored his first goal for Arsenal.
“Aaron Ramsey is stepping in all the time and you can see how everyone celebrates together, there is a proper mentality building up that we can be proud of. That’s our momentum and we need more of that.”
Singled out by Mertesacker at the end of a week in which he made three starts for Arsenal, missed a penalty in a shootout and scored his first ever goal for the club, young Serge Gnabry returned the compliment by thanking his compatriot for helping him settle in the first team.
“It helps when you’ve got players from the same country speaking the same language. Especially for me as a young player, they talk to me a lot and I can learn a lot from them,” Gnabry told Arsenal Player.
“It’s good for Arsenal having these good players in the team. Scoring my first goal for Arsenal is something amazing,” he continued.
“Everybody dreams of scoring for the first team and I’ve done that so I’m very happy.”

i think some people have problem with other people being overexcited. this is the same type of behaviour that saw some of those people criticise our Club and scream for changes when we were having harder times. now we’re rolling better and suddenly we’re world champions. there is immense potential in this side and i hope it’ll be realised, but calm the fuck down.
i say let’s have a good game against napoli, and hopefully win. but 1-0 would be perfectly enough. ONE NIL TO THE ARSENAL!
Yeah exactly, and Napoli are a fucking good side too. I never like to go into games overconfident, but we’ve got a great team too so I don’t doubt we can get the win.

My mates say we have a great midfield quartet of Ozil wishere ramsey and flamini, but they forget that weve also got Cazorla Rosicky The Ox and mikel arteta who arent even back yet!

It’s all nice, but I kind of don’t want to hear too much about the special spirit or anything like that. I know he was probably asked a question about it but still… it’s in the same vein as… we’ve heard very little about “mental strength” this season? Do you know why? Because it’s not being questioned twice a week, we clearly just have it right now.
Much as I love our skilled players, BFG has become my personal #1. He just always seems to be getting in the way of those assholes trying to score against us. How he reads the game, how he positions himself, it is a joy to watch. Not to mention calming my frayed nerves.
