Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed that Per Mertesacker was absolutely right to give him Der Earful after his careless pass against Coventry on Friday night.
The youngster gave the ball away which led to a good chance for the visitors, Leon Clarke hitting the post. In the immediate aftermath, Per Mertesacker gave him a good telling off, reminding him to be better and smarter than that.
And Oxlade-Chamberlain says it’s exactly the way it should be. Speaking to Arsenal Player, he said, “If you do something that’s not good enough you can bet your bottom dollar that one of your team-mates will tell you when he believes you’re better than that.
“I gave the ball away and it resulted in them hitting the post. I knew what I did and I knew what I did wrong there and Per just gave me a friendly reminder. That’s what you need, you need to keep each other’s standards high and we’ll be doing it all season.
“But it’s important that we do it in the right way, whoever it is. If it’s Per he’ll have a shout but then afterwards he will come and explain it to you and that’s what makes you respond to it.
“He doesn’t do it in a negative way and that’s the way we go about it. We just keep doing things positively.”
That’s quality stuff from Captain on the night Per, and speaks to the benefit of having experienced players around to help the young talents like Oxlade-Chamberlain grow and develop.
Meanwhile, the draw for the 5th round of the cup takes place this afternoon in which we’re bound to get Chelsea or Man City. You just watch.
Hope this improvement in attitude from the squad is per-manent….
He’s a firm but fair Per.
Per for Captain. He has more leadership in his pinkie finger than any other captain we’ve had in recent years.
It’s going to a be an awkward moment between him and Verm when they’re having to lift our first trophy later this year.
If they both try to lift it at the same time, Vermaelen will end up dangling in mid air.
To save on any embarrassment, Per can lift the league trophy, and Vermaelen can lift the European Cup.
Arteta can lift the FA Cup.
And Mannone can lift the Capital One Cup.
Bobby…the best!!
me too wants the 3 trophies
Bobby — love it.
We get slated for, well slating our ex players, but it is only the exclusive group of traitors. The rest still get the love they deserve, particularly if leaving was not their fault.
How many Gooners were praying Vito saved all the penalties on Wednesday? How many still would even if it hadn’t been United? I know I would.
Maybe Per could lift Thomas who could lift the trophy. Captain lifting the team captain lifting the trophy
What about Bendtner?? Surely he get to be the one who lifts the trophy right?? 😛 #Lord jkjk
That’s wrong. Vermaelen has been a fine captain. Arteta has been absolutely fabulous whenever he had to stand in (which is very often). And Per has been brilliant too.
Why do we have to pull other players down, as if that is the only way to say great things about Per? Don’t forget, those other players are also OUR players, who have been trying their best for us.
It is just a harmless banter, they are not bringing Arteta or Verm down.
still a massive fan on TV5, but he has neither the discipline or authority of Per the debt collector, or Flamini for that matter… I’m banking on us winning more then one trophy and whoever lifts them we need Theo on hand to remind Tottenscum of the numbers
i think vermaelen is someone who leads by example, rather than someone who is always keeps speaking and it is probably unfair to sya he hasn’t authourity.
in any case, wenger did make him captain, so he obviously has someting that maybe both arteta and per don’t have.
I agree that he is worlds better than Gallas, and quite a bit better than RvP and Fabregas, but TV5 and Arteta have been pretty solid. His authority on the pitch is clear and the fact that he can bark at someone to get through to them in the heat of the moment and still remember to explain later is awesome.
Mr Arsenal. It’s a title to be earned, Per is showing he has all the attributes to have a statue at the grounds.
That one would be a bastard to make though
They would have to have a fundraising Oktoberfest to rival Munich’s to pay for the materials
Per was actually my MOTM on Friday and may well be my player of the season. Integral to our new found confidence and calmness. Also showed little bit great footwork in the Coventry half Friday which I loved.
I can picture Mertesacker as our manager in about 20 years, once he’s finished his stint as German Chancellor of course.
Love our BFG.
On another note, thought this was fucking brilliant……
http://m.101greatgoals.com/blog/coventrys-fans-put-on-a-brilliant-halftime-show-singing-twist-shout-at-arsenal-fan-footage
….glad to see they enjoyed the night out.
that’s awesome—looks like fun
What an improvement from the likes of Senderos, Djourou and Squillaci who would have a permanently retarded face and having -272 leadership qualities.
Don’t be an arsehole.
I love ze germans. All of them. Cant wait for Draxler……..i was told last night we have agreed a fee and should be done soon. Is this bollocks? I hope not.
Don’t think it’s bollocks. No German paper is reporting it as done and dusted, or anywhere near, but a few seem to think it could happen.
Nice article on Zelalem in Welt am Sonntag enthusing over our Germanness and our kids’ lovely football. We may soon be salivating over even more Vorsprung durch Technick, they say (‘Der FC Arsenal darf sich also bald über noch mehr “Vorsprung durch Technik” freuen’). They’re referring specifically to Zelalem’s promise, but not ruling out Draxler as becoming part of the mix.
Then again, Bild are reporting that Schalke 04’s manager has said on Sky that no talks are taking place, not with any club, and no offer’s been made. (‘Wir führen keine Gespräche mit keinem Verein. Es gibt auch kein Angebot für Julian.’ Manager Horst Heldt bei „Sky” über die Wechselgerüchte um Julian Draxler.)
Maybe it means nothing; maybe he has been told by the chairman to keep his mouth shut; maybe he’s following orders from Wenger. I guess we’ll have a clearer idea at 11.55 on the last night of the window.
“‘Wir führen keine Gespräche mit keinem Verein.”
Ah, but there is a double negative in here. It really means: “Julian is practically already an Arsenal player.”
I knew four years of German in school would come in handy some day.
German syntax is like my second language Afrikaans. The negative must appear on the end of a sentence thus.
Manure sal NIE ‘n trophee wen NIE.
means “Manure will not win a trophy” or
“Manure sal nooit weer n’ trophee wnen NIE.”
Manure will never win another trophy.
Blogs u have contacts…..any truth? Or is it an illusion : (
I love this. Can you imagine Djourou or Senderos doing this? Love the leaders we have at the moment, they’re the difference…
Herr Per should be given the armband. No idea what happened to TV but this guy’s the bomb.
so everyone says form the mirror to the mail. Blogs, shed some light on this, draxler in or not?
I tried not to get seduced in this window, but if we don’t sign Draxler now I will be gutted. Another tense deadline day no doubt.
prepare to be gutted then
Between Ozil taking the FA Cup seriously and hinting at his desire to win silverware and Per’s on-field authority you can see the ingredients are there. Let’s hope injuries fuck the right off for the rest of the season and see what happens.
I really loved that Ozil tweet. Shows how much our players are focused on winning silverware this season. #COYG
Per reminds me so much of adams, pure leader
Think I saw some post about Koscielny giving Jenks an earful about dangerous, fast backpass to the keeper as well. Can’t remember where I saw it but it was pretty evident when Fabianski can’t control the backpass given to him resulting a corner.
Part of what makes the pairing so special is they take every mistake, every goal conceded personally.
No one should score against us; no one is allowed to. If it happens; its an affront.
That is what turns good into great, and great into (dare I say it), Invincible.
Love seeing Per have a good shout at the player who dare make a poor mistake in his team! ahah!
Per for Prime Minister
Lol haha ook at Per from the appearing from the edge of the pic there.
Koscienly, Jack and even the man the loose ball kept under pressure; Fabianski all went quiet but no not Per. That is the the man i would want leading me out to the pitch week in week out, Captain per!
When was the last time we had a captain like that who didn’t take any nonsence. Last captains van persie and arteta. I think that per is a good captain and a good leader. That’s what we never had in the past few seasons
I agree about Per, but he’s not as aggressive a character as some are making out; he’s just trying to keep a tight ship. However, I don’t think this is a ‘better’ kind of leader than Arteta or Verminator, just another character to have to help the team.
As Per normal Kos they’re the best in Europe!
“A friendly reminder”. Yeah, Ox knows.
Did Tony Adams give Per special training during the summer?!
This man is becoming Mr. Arsenal’s spiritual successor in every which way.
BFG for President 😛
If that was a friendly reminder from Per then I wonder how he’ll be giving an unfriendly reminder. *shudders*
Per Mertesacker is turning into one of the best signings of the Wenger era. If we go on to win things under his leadership he will be well up there with the likes of Adams, Henry and Bergkamp.
Spurs are shyte!
You spelled “shit” wrong.
Great BFG! cares about the team. dosen’t matter what game we play. EPL or FA cup. Even yelled at Ozil!
He is Arsenal! in some ways.
and it’s great that players say O.K to him. BIG FUCKING LEADER
It wouldn’t be an Arsenal victory without a severe Mertesacking. The only question is … who’s next up for a Permaling?
Is that my coat in the middle of the road??
I stand up to respect Chamberlin for his understand with per in deed it shows good understanding in the term.up arsenal
I have no idea what you said but I agree.
I understand exactly what you said and I also agree.
This round was drab for sure the cough hotballs will be out this afternoon
PM should be captain even when he ain’t playing. I can imagine him giving someone a bollocking from the touchline.
Oh Per, where were you in 2007?
Werder Bremen.
Per has become louder and authorative .. we need it. He was the same at Villa when Santi’s sloppy pass led to their goal and 20mins of tough defending that was unnecessary
I’m liking Per’s approach. He is doing this more and becoming a strong leader as a result
Mertesacker is a Per-fectionist and I am a big fan of the way he brings the team together. He is a true captain, and I salute you!
Ozil knows better..
Than to ignore the fans who travel to away games again, you’re right
There’s a ton of variables that go into a successful squad. Obviously there’s the talent, and style of play, which in most of our opinions has been up to par, or slightly below these past few years. We’re now seeing the variables we lacked, togetherness, leadership, hunger, a willingness to (going hip hop) ride or die with one another. The time has arrived, the pieces are in place, the ambition is there. I have no doubt that this squad of men, not boys is going to lift something shiny this year. BOOK IT!
Already did!Thumbs up!!!
Couldn’t agree more. They seem to have a brilliant chemistry as a team developing – my only hope is that the situation with Verm doesn’t disrupt that.
Got to be hard as team captain hugging the bench.
The best case scenario if you ask me is for Verm to work on his weaknesses and provide really stiff competition for the CB places.
“the draw for the 5th round … in which we’re bound to get Chelsea or Man City.”
I see what you’re doing there, Blogs. You’re hoping that by pre-empting the draw your prediction won’t actually come to pass.
Now, of course, you realise that if we *do* get Chelsea or Man City, it’ll all be *your* fault, don’t you?
Its OK, it was all designed to make sure we got the Mugsmashers
Per has been the missing ingredient, a big fat bully to keep everyone on their toes.
Big, but the furthest from fat in our team at the moment!
Never a bully, just puts them straight,no problem, same as Flamini, nothing wrong with a swift bollocking!
Think how cheap our back 5 are:
Szczesny – developed by Arsenal
Gibbs – developed by Arsenal
Sagna – about 8 million
Monreal – 10 million
Mertesacker – 10 million
Koscielny – 12 million
Amazing spending by Arsenal!
I don’t think Kos cost that much, did he? Mind you, Santos at 11m was expensive.
Sign of a mature club. This may be the difference when making a run for the title. All of the players are aware that every second on the pitch counts. One lazy pass, one missed tackle, one not getting back to defend, etc could lead us to defeat. 100% all the time. Forward Arsenal!!!
Blogs – I know you’ll hate this but isn’t Per the new Tony Adams?
There’s competition for places throughout the squad, including the captaincy. TV5 has shown the class and dignity required of a captain since his demotion to the bench. Both Per and Mikel would be great captains themselves. Thankfully gone are the days when we had no player truly worthy of being captain and the captaincy was used instead as a carrot to tame potentially divisive locker room personalities like Gallas or to (unsuccessfully) buy the loyalty of potentially want away players like Cesc and RvP.
Yes PM is great.. Dunno why we are bickering about who’s a better captain.. Tbh cesc was pretty awesome too.. He just never had a team that gave a shit
Who’s bickering? This is Arseblog where we gather to errr discuss things.
Wonder why any Gooner in here should direct any question on rumoured Draxler’s transfer at the blogger. He doesn’t look like Arsene to me. Don’t put him in any ridiculous situation please.
bodes well for Tuesday. Our lads do something to upset each other and they have a word, take each others view on board and use it to motivate themselves to do better. Southampton almost do the same but instead do it with bricks.
Well guys i just checked Schalke squad for todays game and hes not in it?? Injured?
Yes, which is why we won’t sign him till summer.
Yup, has a banjaxed ankle. — Originally meant to be out ’til March, but maybe (or not) back earlier, depending on which set of mind games are most current from Schalke and his agent.
Not the reason we won’t sign him in January but maybe it will quieten down these rumours…then again maybe not.
At least we don’t hear about Ciprian Marica.;)
It’s a shame we sign BFG a bit late. He is the type of captain we were all looking for after cesc left.
Must be cos he was waaay too slow for the PL. 😉
Several things about the game : 1) We need someone to always be 2 yards off the 6 yard box attacking the far post when the fullbacks overlap. This particularly when the (predictable) Jenkinson makes a run for the byline. he put in some good crosses (which he looked up ) and some lucky but good crosses 9which he didn’t look up). Poldy could have easily got two more goals had he been in slightly earlier close to the point of the six yard box. Basically when you see Jenkinson running to the byline, get yourself to the far post… Read more »
We won’t sign Draxler UFO. Not in January : 1) Why would Shalcke decide to let go now when he has potential suitors in May and his price will only increase. Are they desperate to off load because of debt? 2) He is potentially fabulous but will need time to settle. He will not carry the immediate impact we need for second half of the season. 3) If Wenger (as suggested by some) think he can turn him into the next false nine, this will again take time. We need someone to slot in straight away. Otherwise we have plenty… Read more »
…not to mention Schalke would have to come down on price considerably.
As good as he is, he’s done nothing to suggest a 35m price bracket (considering Ozil is at 42.3m and Mata was just signed for 35m)
There are plenty of cheaper options out wide that would suffice.
Unless price is @ say 20m I don’t see why we would pay over value for a position we already have cover.
Far better to have spent the money at this point on a (cheaper) out and out striker.
