Welbeck: No more winging it

Danny Welbeck says regular game time as a central striker, combined with the opportunity to play in front of high calibre midfielders, is bringing out the best in him at the Emirates.

The 23-year-old’s hat-trick against Galatasaray on Wednesday night took him to four goals in five games since signing from Manchester United on deadline day – he also bagged a brace for England against Switzerland – and he admits he’s looking to build on a promising start.

“If you’re getting goals and getting a run of games in your preferred position, your confidence is going to grow and performances are going to grow as well,” he told Arsenal Player. “That is something I am really looking forward to doing, building on those performances.

“I wouldn’t say I feel different. Maybe beforehand, sometimes I wasn’t getting through on goal if I was coming from a four-man midfield.

“Obviously it’s difficult to leave your position and go and get goalscoring opportunities. But I’m getting into these positions much more regularly now, and I’m looking forward to sticking the ball in the back of the net.”

Leading the line ahead of the likes of Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Alexis Sanchez, Tomas Rosicky and the soon to return Theo Walcott, Welbeck stressed that opportunities to score are likely to be far more forthcoming than they were at Old Trafford where he was regularly asked to play in midfield.

“When I’m playing with these sorts of players, they are looking to slip the ball in behind. I  am always ready for that, looking to make the movement right and get in behind the defenders. [Against Galatasaray] I did that a couple of times and scored a few goals.

“I’m looking to build an understanding with the players and getting to know them better, it’s good to play with this calibre of midfielders, they are only going to create chances.

“Nobody can really criticise my finishing because they don’t really see me playing in a forward position too often. But now I am getting into these positions I want to be sticking the ball in the back of the net. I’m sure it’s the same with every other striker.

“Obviously people can say I’ve not scored enough goals, but you stick the best strikers on the wing in a four-man midfield and see if they score goals.”

judas_d-gooner

Fair dos

fresh prince

Go on my son.

the only sam is nelson

so they kept the england striker who is on £300K a week and can’t control his temper, and we got the younger, faster, fitter, mentally focused and better england striker? For basically the price of a Steven Fletcher?

Not too shabby, that

now go and fucking make John Terry look like the cunt that he is, please Danny

Thanks in advance!

Zeus

Well said Welbeck, happy you are with us. There’s whining git of a manager we’ll be playing against on Sunday, feel free to shut him up. No pressure.

Ciaran

I cannot wait to see Alexis, Ozil and Ramsay threading through balls for both Walcott and Welbeck! Their pace is going to open up so much space for the midfield play-makers to do their job effectively!

I can’t wait for Sundays game! #COYG

crown

Sunday. #COYG

das pauly bear

Why has welbz not done his trade mark celebration yet?

I guess he is leaving it for me to do right in my manure fans mates faces ha

I take great delight in rubbing in every goal

WengersNoseHair

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think he has a trademark celebration. Unless it’s the one where he puts his arms out like a plane. You aren’t by any chance confusing him with Sturridge?

Moonie

Is he Andre Marriner ?

Gooner from Pretoria.

Let’s kill those russian mob chavs…

goonerr

Welbeck, the Ox, Sanchez, Walcott (when he’s fit).. fastest Arsenal team since..?

Lord Nicki B

Since the trio of Andre Santos, Bendtner and Ju Young Park.

Never have any names struck such fear into the opposition.

WOWS!

I like welbeck, and we got him for a bargin, but he did need those goals. His goals to chances ratio wasnt exactly great for us up to that point. He could have had 3 in his first CL game for us too if his finishing was at the level it was on Wednesday. Hopefully he kicks on now because he’ll need to be clinical at the bridge if we’re to get 3 points.

GoonaDownUnder

Confidence is a wonderful thing…

Phil

That forward line vs Galatasaray was amazing. Here’s hoping we burn Chelsea with the sheer pace too. If they hit us on the counter, we’ll score on the counter to their counter. Hopefully. With any luck, Cahill and Terry will both channel their inner Melo.

Phil

Oh, and Brendan, how’s Balotelli doing?

The Only Olivier is Giroud

We need world class talent like Balotelli, they said.

Wele wele wele, score many as you may,hey hey hey

iyodo

He sounds so confident of himself and am loving it

Modhabobo

I like his ‘with this calibre of midfielder’….like a little two fingers to United

Chris O

Oh you noticed that too, did you? 😀

o2ba

Yep love that little snipe at manure. Now spank the chavs and we’ll all be happy gooners.

Rambozil

Glad to see our boys one by one answering the critics. More fuel to the fire. I can’t help but feel we’re 1 – 2 players short of a title winning squad including the players we have injured. Feo, the Welsh Jesus, Debuchy, HFB….We stay within touching distance of the c*nts at the top and invest wisely in January, we could….nvm, wont get carried away. Just enjoying my high before Super Sunday – COYG !!

WengersNoseHair

Reading what he says about himself, it seems like he completes our attack. “When I’m playing with these sorts of players, they are looking to slip the ball in behind. I am always ready for that, looking to make the movement right and get in behind the defenders.” That’s true, isn’t it? Ozil, Cazorla, Wilshere, Ramsey, Rosicky, Podolski, and even Walcott on occasion, like slipping in those balls for someone to get on the end of, looking for someone to make those runs and get on the end of a final ball. Giroud isn’t really that type of player, due… Read more »

oluwapunkey

make sure to give me something to cheer about on sunday no matter what the scoreline looks like

Possession

Don’t forget to mention The Ox in future Danny. He slid a lovely ball through to you for your third on Wednesday if memory serves me correctly.

Klop

I’m liking Welbeck, very positive attitude wanting the best for the team and to show some doubters wrong!!! I’m in the mood for ripping it out of the chav scum and just hope the boys turn that feeling into reality – go kick some ARSEnal arsenal arsenal we love you 🙂
