As you can probably see we spent some time and effort over the Interlull in making our player ratings system nicer and better and all cool and stuff (ya’ll need to doff your cap to @AlexKirwan).
However, it seems to us a shame that the team couldn’t put the same measure of effort into their preparations for this game. Here’s how we feel the player rated.
Feel free to add your own votes and comments to our sparkly new system.
This really, really stings. I hope this is the lowest it gets all season.
I hope so too, but when it rains it pours with Arsenal
On the (sort of) bright side, Giroud – what a hit son!
So depressing. But taking solace amongst the arseblog support group here. Thanks guys.
Most players did a fair job given the mission they were sent out to do by the manager. Tactically we are read like a book by any opposition. Players did OK.
For other matches, I’ll agree about the ‘tactical’ but not this game. Arsenal did not lose to anything that looked like tacticality by Van Gaal. I mean, if any of those early chances had gone in, we would be talking about a rout. United were just lucky. The match was like a boxer beaten black and blue yet somehow swings a lucky punch and caught his opponent square on the jaw and down he goes. I am somehow optimistic that if the team keeps playing like this and creating chances, they are capable of turning things round.
and hull were lucky and spurs were lucky etc etc etc and arsene’s a genius.
I was rather specific if you read my comment. The ‘luck’ thing was only about this game. Read it again.
i’ve always thought that being really, really stupid must be pleasant. is it?
arsene doesnt deal with tactics.. he doesnt set the team out to nullify the opposition. he believes the team is superior to any other and so they should play like that to win. the fucking problem is we have a bunch of nice guys who are so fucking low on self esteem that they cant live up to what is expected of them. Imagine Viera or henry or berkamp or adams. they were so great technically but they were also arrogant enough to believe that they were better than the rest. The current bunch(other than alexis and sczc to some… Read more »
And you conclude that because our players confidently bossed Manchester United the entire game with plenty of shots on goal?
So if our players are so low on self-esteem, how about the Man U players? They hardly got a touch, looked slow and nervy when they did. RVP touched the ball only 9 times in open play.
Really harsh on Wilshere. He was actually making things happen. Anyway, we all have to face the fact that we all knew what was going to happen after we didn’t score – concefe a bad goal, then go utterly mental immediately and inevitably get caught on the break.
Same old problems, and we are not adressing them. Didn’t matter who was on the pitch.
How and why he did not pass to Alexis defies belief at this level of the game.Jack has got to look seriously at what he is going to do to match up to the level he should be .
I think it is taking the easy way out to point the finger of blame solely at Jack, our dead balls were again appalling for the most part, either in delivery or execution. As fans I am sure we all knew if we hadn’t gone ahead by the 60th minute or so it meant we were really struggling to break down their defence, and that’s the problem of the whole team not just the midfielder who squandered the best chance of the game.
This is just daft. The real problem is that he missed a fairly straight forward chance, not that he didn’t pass.
Jack W is delusional imo, as is AW, about him. Time on the bench for Jack and AR or indeed anyone else who is out of sorts. Time for competition and rotation, and that includes the manager.
Yeh, Jack was one of the better players that miss aside, no way he deserves that. Particularly when our CF, who’s job it is to put the ball in the net can’t score for toffee but still gets 6+.
Ramsey needs dropped too. After all the talk he’s still playing for himself, shooting when he had far better options, charging forward with no cover in the middle… He needs knocked down a peg or two before he can be trusted again.
1 for Wilshere who was our best player by some margin and 5 for Welbeck who missed a free header that was just as good a chance?
Blogs, we were all pissed off after the game having spunked our £65 to see the worse team win but this slagging off of Wilshere makes no sense. It was opposite to the opinions of everyone I was chatting to after the game. Notice how we were less threatening and mobile after Jack left the pitch?
ok question, why wasn’t paddy mcnair’s challenge on wilshere a foul?
Not only a faul, pretty red too……..
Because the referee was Mike Dean.
Got to be careful what you ‘know’ because it might just happen.
Law of the universe… and we’re all here blaming the players and the manager.
And your point is?
It just stings that much more because they are so fucking abject, Man Utd. They offered absolutely nothing and got a lucky deflection to lead the game. We probably should have had a penalty, Wilshere’s got no excuse not to score and then for Gibbs, who I thought was excellent again today, to turn it in? Sickening. I’m not convinced calling for change will even work because there’s so little we can change right now. We can’t go out and get another defender, or midfielder and tactically things aren’t going to get any better. I just really hope we toughen… Read more »
+1 for Gibbs contribution. I thought he was great, especially in attacking situations.
Just hurts that much more knowing how we lost it. They were dreadful.
Very true. Man U sucked horribly. We were all over them and should have buried them by the second half. Instead we allowed Rooney a sneaky goal in a space so big you could have fitted the entire crowd and their friends and families there. Where were the goals? Where were the fucking goals???
Cazorla was shit. We stopped attacking after wilshere’s injury.
I would prefer our little mozart instead
Cazorla has been crap all year long. When I saw him coming into the game I wasn’t happy to say the least.
Thats what happens when quality players are benched and with no rotation they get stale and unhappy.
So valid. I was at the game, and so much of our energy died when Santi replaced Jack. He’s been so abject recently, I feel he’s just waiting until his next move. So sad to see
Imo they have both been abject this season. But were you referring to Santi? JW overrated IMO.
Yip, only good thing about Santi coming on was the Santi Cazorla song.
No idea what’s happened to him but he just looks like he doesn’t want the ball. If only Rosicky had come on it would’ve unbalanced us less.
I thought Giroud was excellent, even apart from his goal. They looked like a new team once he came on.
Seriously, what has happened to Cazorla??
In his first season, he was one of the best players in the league. At the moment though, i’d rather field fucking Arshavin.
Well done Giroud!
Hi Arseblog,
The new system is really nice, thanks for the great effort. Just a small suggestion. I suggest you hide yours and the Readers’ ratings until we cast ours. I think seeing your ratings before we decide biases our choices (we will unconsciously tend to choose something closer to you). Thanks.
Cheers but not everybody wants to vote. Plus people can make up their own minds without being influenced by what we write.
Yes, Master 😉
Agree new system is excellent, but could we have a numerical value displayed on hover along with the stars colouring in? E
Hi, I’m on a samsung android phone and can’t select a rating. Had the same issue on the match report and couldn’t select the goal links to arsenalist. Cheers
Nobody played badly, but it was a terrible performance. Which kinda says it all
I agree. We played 100 times better than Man U but they still beat us. Like you say, says it all. Man U are horrible right now. We aren’t. I know all the criticisms but we really are not a bad team. How come we keep squandering game after game? Today especially was shocking. Fucking hell Wenger, just fucking sort this out!
Id like to point out that Wilshere and Ramsey’s lack of quality of preformance cant be taken out of context of the situation they are placed in. The manager has habitually failed to place them (and not just them) in a position to succeed all year. (Ozil on the left and Monreal in the center are also clear examples of this). Arteta is not good defensively and he is actually fairley limited in his ball playing ability as well. Obviously he tries hard but thats not enough. Fans have too low of expectations regarding the contributions of the defensive midfielder.… Read more »
Arteta was one of the standout quality players out there today. On current form Ramsey is the LAST person out there I want organizing the team. He cannot even prioritize his own responsibilities at the moment.
The fact is this season we are a far better and more organized squad with Arteta out there than anyone else, bar none.
Spot on. Very tidy yesterday, to bad he aint got the quickest feet anymore….
What is Szczesnys save percentage? Got to be the worst in europe.
The guy is a clown. He’s not good enough to be our No.1, he might be one day, but that day won’t come for a very long time, if it comes.
I doubt you would have made the same comment at the end of last season when he won the golden glove. People can be so quick to write players off. Its not his fault we are playing with a makeshift defence at the moment.
what exactly was Szczesnys fault today? gibbs should stay away from him at the Goal at in the last games he was exposed so badly by his defence. and de gea was not so great, wilsheres shot was awful….
I never had real expectation to begin with, but I am still sad. That’s not fair, I don”t want to sad any more.
sad for the most part of the last 8 years…
I’ve got a friend who used to support Liverpool and out of the blue (about 10 years ago) decided to support Portsmouth instead. Bought a season ticket and everything. One of the strangest things I ever saw! But not so strange any more. I don’t want to go on hearing this anger and disappointment – not just on here but also at the Emirates. It must be nice for my friend to stand there every week and laugh instead! “We’re shit, and we know we are!”, laughing as the ball gets hoofed out of the ground. Ultimately not dragged through… Read more »
Played well, got done. It’s one game. We weren’t going to win the league before it and we aren’t now. Still a good team that seems to be developing, Ox was great and loads of other positives. Long term we will be a force.
April fools day already?
it´s only one game? think of the performances: leicester, spurs, chelsea, hull, anderlecht home, Dortmund away, Swansea. and even the wins at sunderland and anderlecht were quite lucky.
5’s & 6’s extremely harsh considering we literally battered them in general play!! Ox brilliant, Alexis’ work rate rubbing off on him. Gibbs gave everything!! My favourite gooner right now!! The likes of Rambo & Cazorla need to have a hard look at themselves!!! When Theo & Özil are fit they go straight in for me!!
Gibbs? Seriously? Every time I see gibbs i think of the halcyon days of sansom and cole. Gibbs is ordinary beyond belief.
And Winterburn
I know we say this all the time but this really was a nadir as far as seasons go. Not one senior defender in the entire Man Utd side, was made up by bits of string and bum fluff, and we still manage to flub everything. Can’t lay the blame on any one player but a far worse team could have easily pulled one over on Utd today.
I have rarely seen Arsenal play so well and still come away looking awful.
Knew Podolski wouldn’t play today. He spoke in the media and Wenger has to prove nothing would change his mind. Wenger is full of ego. He is always telling in the media how he turned down Bayern many times, French national team ten times and how he detects talent nobody else has seen. His best recruitment not Henry but Lauren because nobody else could have seen qualities in Lauren. He had been forcing Sanogo into the team to prove same.
Wenger, Arsenal is much bigger than you.
sanogo has scored 2 Goals for the French U21 Team last week, wonder why he can´t do it for Arsenal?
Again, bad vibes at the club.
Even Wilshere gave that stunning ball the other day.
If it doesn’t lighten through choice it’ll happen naturally.
I’d rather it happened now.
Arseblog come on, Ramsey 4 and Wilshere 1? Really? Ramsey was miles the worst player on the pitch and Wilshere drove us forward and I was quite impressed apart from his poor finishing, but he worked himself into those chances. Also, we all love Sanchez but apart from effort today he was poor. His worst performance yet, obviously fatigued by his travels. Likely a 4 and certainly not 6. Also Shezny 6? What did he do all day? He fluffed in coming out for the ball Gibbs had under control for their first goal. As for the Ox, sorry Theo,… Read more »
Mika Arteta man of the match .
The Dutch cunt tried everything to kick him beat him but each time Arteta easily dealt with the cunt and the other two front cunts .
It’s gloomy but Theo can bring a spark! We now enter in the busiest period of the season and we can still turn things around, though it is frustrating to know in November that we cannot compete for the main trophies. However, do you remind the 2011/2012 season? We can still take something out of this, and under Arsene the players have never lost their commitment and togetherness.
Right now, I wouldn’t start Walcott over the Ox. He was fantastic last night.
Drop Ramsey. Play Alexis in the hole with Theo right and Ox left. That would scare the shit out of defences!
You know it’s a bad game when Blogs doesn’t even bother with a bonus rating.
The problem is, it wasn’t a bad game. Just a bad result. That is literally it.
We were unlucky, should’ve scored several goals but got done with an unfortunate own goal and as we went chasing we threw away the chance to get anything out of the game. I think it was one of the best games we’ve played from box to box, just when we got to their area we were wayward. It sucks but it’s not the end of the world, saw enough today to suggest we are improving. Just need something to fall for us and build momentum.
Thought the Ox was outstanding. Doesn’t seem to be the same happy dressing room as last year.
Don’t think Dortmund will care less Wednesday So we might get by for now in Europe. Unless we have a very nice draw won’t get no further.
I reckon we need a new manager
I thought arteta was excellent today, broke up the play, defensively switched on, kept Rooney out of the game, I know he get criticism for his lack if pace and size, but should get the credit when he plays well. As far as the game goes, blaming luck isn’t good enough, we bossed utd more than I can ever remember, but poor finishing time and again is costing us. Yes our defense could be better, but we made so many good chances and de gea hardly had a proper save to make. We will never be a top side again… Read more »
I agree he was excellent and that’s coming from someone who has been yapping for years about finding a dm
I’m not getting sick of this, I’m used to it. Sick of the excuses, sick of the shite football.
I’d take George Graham back at this stage
Go for it.
That was far from shite football. Just shite finishing.
Lol, that’s harsh! 😀
I couldn’t go back to the boring Arsenal.
We’ve been spoilt in the Wenger era. Even people who hate him has have to agree out football can be magical.
Why else would we get so humpy when it’s shit?
So damn unlucky. Poor Gibbs. Really unfair result. However bad arsenal were in finishing. United had one shot on goal. They are horrendous. And anyone watching would have to say that arsenal will finish above United.
unlucky? poor in front of goal. gibbs? two awful decisions cost us. yes manU are horrendous but still above us in the table. time to forget the excuses, this is just plain awful and the man responsible for this same stuff every week for years now is the Manager.
Wenger out comments are just as much an excuse as the best of them.
And that my fellow gooners is why I would rather have a striker who can score goals than one who runs around. The sooner Giroud is back to full fitness and starting the quicker we’ll climb the table.
Goal Machine Giroud!! hahaha The guy is average
Well said Arseblog!! Wilshere’s miss was criminal. We don’t win much when he plays, do we?
Every game that goes by I feel like we’re edging closer to a change that will most likely result in a new manager. I guess this is going to be a huge drag of a season until next summer.
We will overcome
Just need to take responsibility on the pitch
Santi and Ramsey
Que pasa amigos
Bonus rating should be -10/10 for the fans queueing to get out of the ground after the 2nd goal with 13 minutes left to play.
The players and manager should be looking long and hard at themselves after losing that game, but so should certain quarters of the Emirates too, embarrassing.
wouldn´t do it myself but i do wonder if it´s got something to do with forking out 50 Pounds or more to see the same shit every week (and that for most of the last ten years), just guessing though. i´m a fan for over 20 years now but now i´m really fed up. i can´t stand this anymore……. Arsenal, the footballing equivalent of the self destruction button
I agree but the problem is, at which point does a board/owner that are making money, see fit to look for a new manager… And when that day comes, will they look for a top manager or a yes man? my feeling is they will look for someone to do the same and not cause too many waves.
Kroenke out.
Cheers RedFacedGooner, I’m glad somebody else said about the crowd!
Wasn’t it last year or the year before we were playing great away but shit at home?
Almost as if the players dreaded playing at home?
This has been going on for a long time.
I only go a few times a season so the change is obvious.
We literally have to score in the first 10 minutes or the energy in the crowd turns to shit.
@ben, it very much depends on where you sit. Where we were in North bank the support was great throughout even when 2-0 down although there were still about 10-20 fans walking out before the end.
Arsenal had more possession and shots. If it were a boxing match ,Arsenal will win by a massive points margin. I am afraid Wenger has lost touch and is anovice as far as tactics are concerned. No doubt Gibbs scored an own goal but with the incessant attacking,it was a matter of time before the attack breaks down or the ball is intercepted and ttrue enough the ugly one went on to score. This has been the pattern where Arsenal have lost to the likes of Chelsea,MU,POOL and MC How can the ugly one,Ronaldo and Drogba not score dozens of… Read more »
Let us forget the EPL Title this year….Try and depend our FA Cup.
Hope another team would take it,not chesky though!
Maybe 1 is a little harsh on Wilshere; 1.25 more like it but fact is for Arsenal there is absolutely no end product to his play. The chance he missed today was dispecable and sums him up for me but most Gooners are totally blinded by the fact that it’s Jack ‘Arsenal through and through’ Wilshere. Had Ramsey missed that chance, god help him. Bigger picture however, is we are a squad utterly lacking in any balance. Arsene has no idea what his best team is having assembled a squad of players so similar it’s impossible to pick. And it’s… Read more »
Is it the players that are too “attack minded” or is it the manager telling Mertesacker to hang out with Danny Welbeck for a bit when we’re only a goal down?
You have to aportion blame to both parties I believe.
Wenger sets the team up and tells them how he wants them to play.
But as a player, and particularly an experienced one like Per you also have a resbonsibilty to manage the game once it starts; make the right decisions as a player.
But then we come back to the main point again… The manager sets the mood (or should) and therefore mindset of the team, which is clearly not all it should be.
Arsene is far too passive and trusting in his players. As has been said by countless ex-players. It is a strength with the right players and a huge weakness with the wrong ones.
Blogsy I love you, but Mertersacker was a bit more than a little out of position. He was tallyho-ing forward at every opportunity, leaving a defender still learning how to play in the middle, on his own against Rooney and Di Maria. It was inevitable.
We look so much better with Giroud on. More directness is exactly what the team needs and he provides that.
It appears the genius of Professor Arsene is no more???
Urgently Mr Wenger bring back Henry n Dennis in coaching roles. I say it again, you can no longer do it on your own.
it´s Long gone, watching a Bruce Rioch coached team seems to be more fun than this crap
We lost this game because our finishing sucked. We had chances and shot it right at the keeper. Should of been up 3-0 at half time. Give all the attackers a 2. Giourd was the only one that showed up and did his job.
I don’t have enough thumbs for this.
Where did 8 minutes come from? Really! If the players knew there’d be 8 mins after regular time their heads wouldn’t have dropped after united’s 2nd.
Anyone else getting tired of Wenger saying we need to take this on the chin? Buy a commanding midfielder, a goalie who is not a space cadet and legitimate backups at right back and left back, along with another central defender.
Take that on the chin, Wenger.
Hey Arseblog, Great update to the player-ratings system! Keep up the great work 🙂 Love the ‘season-average’ feature you’ve added. As a suggestion (and this is just the stats-nut in me speaking, so feel free to overlook), it would be very interesting (I think) to also see a ‘standard-deviation’ on the ‘Readers votes’ for each player. This would highlight how split the opinions were on a players performance. For instance, I could see Sanchez getting a pretty low amount of standard deviation however, for Ozil it would’ve been pretty high given how some folks thought he was utter rubbish while… Read more »
On a hugely crap day, worth noting the (few) positives – Giroud, back from injury several weeks early, was awesome throughout and scored a great goal within minutes of his return. Ox and Alexis great. Shot at the title is gone of course, but a successful season isn’t. COYG.
We don’t seem that exciting to watch lately, play it in to a midfielders feet they come back to the defence, no one has the balls to turn and make something happen, if you want to score the ball has to go in the box (mostly) but it rarely does and current tactics are not working, a football match always consists of both teams having chances it’s about who takes them, well we’ve not been taking our chances for weeks FFS
Positives: Monreal was very impressive I thought, was very composed in possession and drove forward into midfield well when United were sitting deep. Giroud is back, love the guy, we’ve missed his top linkup play up front, probably one of the reasons Ramsey isn’t playing that well. Negatives: I’ve had enough of Gibbs, it wasn’t the own goal that infuriated me today it was his inept ability going forward. He can’t cross, we’ve seen him attempt these weak reasonably low crosses into the box for the past 3 years and yet he still doesn’t improve. He’s too predictable, too one… Read more »
This result alone means that this has to be Wenger’s last season. Softer than Pele without his little blue pills. How do you lose to THIS ManU team? Klopp needs a change of scene so move Wenger upstairs.
Does it make sense to blame Wenger for the players’ totally shite finishing? In the real world if any of them -except Giroud- had not shot it directly at DeGea we’d have won 4-2.
Thought Welbeck did try too hard to score, which is kind of understandable, but it just didn’t work for him. By all means he should be a man on a mission (God knows it’s worked AGAINST us countless times), but some of his play screamed of desperation. Wilshere should’ve put us up EASILY. Alexis’ position aside, he had enough space to roll it into the outside corner instead of trying to beat the goalkeeper to his near post. Either that, or try to get some air under the ball and force de Gea into a harder save. And for what… Read more »
Meanwhile…… jenkinson got MOTM at West Ham… Hmmmmm
i find this so frustrating…why the hell would you let jenkinson go on loan if you weren’t prepared to play ballerina at RB or replace vermilion at CB? another one of wenger’s brilliant decisions.
1 for Jack? Come on lets get some perspective for fucks sake………
The manager of Arsenal says that the team are defensively naive. Does nobody see the irony? #ratners
