Henry calls on Wenger to strengthen squad

Thierry Henry has reiterated his belief that Arsene Wenger needs to strengthen the spine of his Arsenal team if they are to challenge for the title next season.

Changing tack from last month when he appeared to claim the Gunners won’t win the league with Olivier Giroud leading the line, the Frenchman insisted that the key to success is competition for places across the squad.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Henry drew comparisons with the Invincibles’ era:

“Alexis Sanchez made me believe he can [take Arsenal to the next level], but I do believe he needs help. I believe also that Olivier Giroud needs help.

“I said what I said [about Giroud] and people took it a bit the wrong way. When we were winning titles it was because [Nwankwo] Kanu could do a job when I needed a rest.

“Dennis Bergkamp, Sylvain Wiltord was coming sometimes with a hat-trick there, a goal at the end of a game but were not always starters.

“I think [Arsenal] need another striker – that’s what I said the other day – that has other characteristics than Giroud.”

“Giroud can do a job for Arsenal. Sanchez can do a job for Arsenal. That team can do a job for Arsenal, but the stats show us they didn’t win the league yet. I think they need to improve that [squad] with other guys.

“When I talked about the spine and talking about the goalkeeper and a centre-back and a holding midfielder and a striker, I’m not saying to the guys [who are already there] ‘leave and let [new guys] come and play’, no, [I’m saying] compete.”

After Giroud hit back at Henry’s previous comments, Arsene Wenger – ever the diplomat –  attempted to diffuse the situation by pointing out his former charge is now paid big money to be controversial in his new role as a pundit.

“He’s paid for that,” Wenger said. “We know all the system now of the modern media, especially on TV. I know how it works. They push you to be controversial because they give you a lot of money.”

Henry concluded his analysis of the current situation at the Emirates by backing Wenger to make the necessary additions: “I still think he has that fire in his belly to make sure he can fire that team to the top again.

“He knows the players that he has, he trusts them and they trust him. But again, the last ten years they’ve not finished in the top two so something has to be done.”

You can’t really argue with what he’s saying here. We have great players but if we had two or three more to really push everyone in every position to get the best out of them then it could make the difference. If Giroud, for instance, never got tired and never needed a rest then he could be a player we could rely on the whole season, but he’s not superhuman so we need another player at least as good as him to cover and push him on and vice versa. Welbeck is a good option but for me he’s more… Read more »

I wish he would just leave sky punks. Lob him to bits but with those ex Liverpool players turned pundits they won’t let it happen…

That statement makes less sense than Theirry’s if you removed the brackets.

David Seaman's Ponytail

That’s a 2012 article….

I loved Arsenal then and still do. Can’t he?

Strong, fast clinical finisher with two feet. Gives a different approach to Giroud and Walcott.

Which ever striker we go for I really hope he’s got two feet!

A three footed striker could make all the difference though.

David Seaman's Ponytail

Problem is, Benteke said that when he was in excellent form, during the 2011/2012 season. He was in the shop window for all to see. Fair play he chose not to move anywhere and has recovered from a dip in form.

My point being, people say things to peak a club’s interest in them but arsenal didn’t sign him. Does he still fancy arsenal? Who knows. I wouldn’t say no to him. It’s just that 3 year old articles in a constantly changing media environment aren’t always the best source of information

CB

He’s still only 24, golden years coming up. If Thierry was his ‘boyhood hero’ that hasn’t changed, if he ‘loves Arsenal’ that is unlikely to have changed.

Anyway there isn’t much enthusiasm from us lot for him, which is interesting given I thought a lot would go for him as he offers something different. Let’s see what happens come the end of the summer, 99% of speculation is wasted energy.

ZA Gunner

A lot of hate for your comment, but I agree that someone like a Benteke or Lukaku type could be a good fit. Similar physicality, holding up qualities to Giroud, with a bit more pace. In a lot of previous games I didn’t think Theo could be a good solution because he can’t fit into our system in terms of holding balls up, although he did do pretty damn well at West Brom. If he carries on from there we might not need to look for another striker at all…

Robbie Rob

Best if we coukd have this season’s right back 4 personals selection problem challenging each other be next year’s strikers problem. Good competition are always welcomed!

“I think [Arsenal] need another striker – that’s what I said the other day – that has other characteristics than Giroud.” – Henry

You’re a legend that has provided me with some great Arsenal memories, but what you said was “Arsenal cannot win the title with Giroud”

I’m glad that he cares enough to go back (somewhat) on what he said though. Surely he could at least imagine if Wrighty took pops at him when he was coming up. Wouldn’t help would it?

Thierry Walcott

Yes he did say that, he was quoted saying “Arsenal cannot win the title with Giroud”.

Az Ahmed

You obviously haven’t seen the full interview and have taken the quote out of context. Yes he said Arsenal cannot win the title with Giroud, but he also said Giroud is very good. A very good striker is what you need to win titles. Giroud is not enough. There needs to be the right striker who can provide competition and come on and get you a goal when the target man system is not particularly working, such as against a team which parks the bus. This will be a default tactic against our team because teams have had success against… Read more »

I’m tired of Henry the pundit now.

Rozza the samourai

Why ? I have seen Tony Adams denigrate Wenger’s job, there were talks Wright did not want his adopted son Shawn Wright Philips to sign for Arsenal and urged him to go to Chelsea where he was utter failure. All these guys have their own lives outside Arsenal. Henry will always remain the most Arsenal minded of them.

Rambling Pete

Perhaps this will be a lesson for Thierry to be a bit more explicit when he speaks as anything that can be misinterpreted by the press for the sake of salacious headlines will be. I don’t think he was too mean to Giroud, it’s simply that he needed to say it better. It reminded me of my brother’s wedding when there was an awful mix-up on the alter. I love Giroud, but Henry do have a point.

Todays squad with a Henry-quality striker in addition to Giroud would definitely be title challengers….

Finsbury Park Gooner

I don’t know how you have any thumbs down here tbh. I think most proper Gooners love Giroud but to think we couldn’t benefit from another great player upfront is just short-sighted.

Incidentally I thought Sir Ches would be the answer to our goalkeeping ills after last season but I am also coming around to the idea of us upgrading in goal too.

Clock-End Mike

And just how many “Henry-quality strikers” are there, sitting around waiting and available for Arsenal to sign them up? He was a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon, you can’t just pick another one like him off the shelf, you know!

Franzsigel

That is unfortunately true Mike. And even if we could find a player of similar quality, I’m afraid Arsenal wouldn’t be his first choice. But that is the still the kind of players we do need to sign if we are going to win the league. Özil and Alexis are great players, and until we get a striker of similar quality I think we will have to be content with 4th and 3rd places. Chelsea and Man City won’t get worse and Man Utd will probably just get better than this year. So we do need to strengthen our squad,… Read more »

You’re kind of stating the obvious there. Henry in his prime was arguably the best striker in the world. Of course we’d be better with the best striker in the world in our line-up! So would any team. The only two strikers in the world today who I think of as “Henry calibre” are Messi and Neymar. Call me a pessimist, but I don’t see us signing either one. I think a more realistic assessment is that we would like to find a striker who is (a) as good as or better than Giroud, and (b) plays a different style… Read more »

Rob

You can bloody well argue with the notion that we need a centre back. We’ve got the best one in the league and his telepathic partner in per, a great young centre back in chambers and Gabriel who seems decent so far, I can’t see how we can improve on them in any significant way. We’ve only conceded 4 more than Chelsea, saying we need a new defence is old hat, a crusty shrivelled up hat which makes you regret your life decisions when you were younger.

Daft Aider

I think defence is the only place we don’t need any changes at all……

Arsepedant

We also don’t need any changes in attacking midfield. Ozil, Sanchez, Walcott, Wilshere, Ramsey, Cazorla, Gnabry, Rosicky … we’re set for life there, and we still have gems like Zelalem and Crowley coming through the academy. Goalkeeper and defensive mid are my only concerns, and they’re not major concerns to me either. If the Vidal rumours are true, then the only position we need to look at is goalkeeper.

Yvan

I believe that Wenger won’t buy any striker. Giroud is our n°1 thanks to his link-up play. Welbeck and Walcott will be competing for the second striker. He reitirated not long ago that he sees Walcott coming to an age where he will be displayed centrally. Surely it is the time now. That left us with a Ox on the right side. What do you think guys? We all would like to another striker but I don’t think there are many that could be an upgrade on what we have already with those 3.

TTT

Lacazette
Benzema
Morata
they’re all upgrades for different reasons

Simonetta

Juventus F.C. are not letting Morata go. So isn’t Real Madrid releasing Benzema until 2018, as it seems.

Ever so well

I think Benzema is a bit of a myth. He’s played for one of the top 3 teams in the world and scored over 20 league goals once in his 6 years there. Hardly prolific considering they win games 4,5,6-nil regularly. Given that he’ll cost over £30m, and wont have played in a league like the Prem before so he’ll need to adjust i don’t think its worthwhile. He also looks quite out of shape these days.

Merlin's Panini

I’ve seen Benzema play in person and he was outstanding. He’s got a real presence and his first touch is pretty awesome. He is playing with a couple of selfish ball hoggers in Ronaldo and Bale which could explain partly the lack of goals, not that I’m saying he’s definitely the answer but I think it’s harsh to say he’s a myth.

Mc1892

Lacazette seems a little like this year’s Origi. And yes, that’s the same Origi that everyone was raving about last year and at the WC, Liverpool shelled out £10m for and that has just been voted into the ‘ligue 1 worst team of the year’. Caution required when dealing with promising youngters in the European leagues.

assistantref

It’s not really a fair comparison. Lacazette had a breakout season this year but he did well last year too. He’s also 24, not 20. He probably will not score 30 goals a season for the rest of his career but he’s in a different category than a one-season-wonder teenager like Origi.

Anonymous Physicist

To be honest, I think that if Walcott stays we won’t buy any attacking players at all. Our squad is pretty stacked in the forward lines, and if no one leaves we’d have too many players competing for too few places. As it is, we have Ramsey, Wilshere, Cazorla, Ozil, Ox, Walcott, Welbeck, Alexis and Giroud competing for five places, with Rosicky and possibly Gnabry/Sanogo/Akpom (depending on loans) available in case of injuries or players being rested. That’s a lot of quality. Any more just wouldn’t make sense to me. While an upgrade at right wing or centre forward would… Read more »

If we have to push a player out to bring in a better one, we should do it, what’s wrong with people who frequent Arseblog?
We’ll never crack Europe or the PL if we don’t look to improve our squad by using our resources and being ruthless when required!

Mc1892

Perhaps that many Arsenal supporters and the club as a whole are supporters of developing talent rather than playing real life FM? Look at Atletico Madrid.. They could probably buy individually better players in certain positions, but there is no need, the sum of the parts far outweighs the (entirely subjective, by the way) talents of the individuals. I’m not saying don’t buy anyone, but I believe Wenger and the scouts are in a better position to determine what constitues a ‘better’ player than you or I.

Anonymous Physicist

No, I’m not on drugs, but thanks for stereotyping those of us who live in Amsterdam anyway. I agree that sometimes people have to be pushed out to bring new people in. But right now, I don’t see who Wenger would be willing to push out, except for maybe Walcott. Hence why I think that we won’t buy any attacking players if Walcott stays. I really don’t see how we can accommodate more than 9 senior internationals in the prime of their career, plus occasional game time for Rosicky and our younger prospects. Next year, we should probably either push… Read more »

WengersNoseHair

Lacazette – has anyone even watched him regularly to say that he’d improve us, or would he just be another body? Reus – another LW, just what we need. We’ll play with the revolutionary tactics two LWs and no RW. Both Sanchez and Reus are markedly less effective on the right. Who gives a shite, let’s splash da cash and get Reus anyway. WengersNoseHair –
My thoughts exactly, bar Cech; still, I’d say, the second best keeper in the league behind Courtois, if you ignore all the outrageous hyperbole surrounding De Gea.
Would love to know what someone who’s actually watched a few games of him thinks of Lacazette, I’m always sceptical when these flavour of the month type players spring up. Also given up trying to guess what strikers will be like coming over to the Prem, was genuinely quite worried when Spurs signed Soldado and put him immediately in my fantasy team, look how that turned out..

WizardofOzil

Fair point on Lacazette, he could be the Ligue 1 equivalent of Harry Kane. Good but not great. I have seen him a couple of times though and he’s certainly quick, intelligent and has a natural goalscoring instinct. Wouldn’t like to wager that he’s special just yet though. Sanchez has operated most of his career on the rhs and is very effective playing there. He’s marginally better on the left cutting in I admit but his game doesn’t lose that much for playing him on the right. Besides, overstocking in attacking midfield has never been a concern for Arsene. I… Read more »

I think these are much fairer and positive comments by Henry. He’s right about competition. I’m not sure we need players in every line but one or two top class additions are surely required and may be enough to win us the league. I think keeper, imposing DM should be priority.

I maintain that punditry wasn’t the way to go for King Henry.

This is what he should have said first time around. The points he makes are valid, even though for me CB is covered. Podolski, Campbell, Sanogo, Flamini,Miyachi and a few others are not the best competition for the starting XI. Two or three top players are all we require and if we can get rid of the players that do not deserve to be in the squad in it’s present guise on merit, much better. The hard truth is that, Arsenal cant win the league with Giroud. Whether it came from Henry or those Liverpool punks, its still the truth. It’s either we get in or make the available players score goals in the teens, then we don’t have a chance. I expected welbeck, ozil to score more.

Higuain would cost around 30 mil. Rather we bid 40 mil + 1 pound for Lewandowski and hopefully they accept. It would be 40 mil of straight profit to Bayern since he went on a free

Arsene's Accountant

I am 100% sure that our current best XI, when fit and in form could dismantle the best teams in the world. However, as this season has shown, take one or two of those players out and we look a far tamer beast. The addition of Sanchez this season took us up a notch and injected a lot into our squad—notably the impact it had on Chamberlain—and I think Wenger should be looking to build on that again. It can only have a positive influence on the current playing group, who are very good. Keen as a Rowan Atkinson for… Read more »

Double98

Not sure that scoring goals has been a major problem.

We won the league in 98 with 68 goals for and 33 Against
The invincibles were 73/26
Chelsea won it this year with 73/32

This season We have 71/36

So a keeper that was slighty better than Ospina or Szcesny could have won us the league
Fabianski was runner up in the golden glove competition this year – with 13.

WengersNoseHair

This season is a bit unusual, with Chel$ea’s low-scoring bus winning, largely because no one really challenged them over the course of the season.

Over the previous five seasons, the winning team has scored 92.4 goals and conceded 35.6. So actually, our defence looks fine, but we do need to score more goals.

Double98

We drew 9 and lost 7.

Of the ones we lost 5 of them were by 1 goal – only 2 where by 2 goals
So marginal losses.

A better keeper may have converted some of those draws to wins and some of those defeats to draws.

Its an easier fix than trying to score more goals – we only failed to score on 5 occasions – The invincibles failed to score on 4.

The invincibles had Jens Lehmann who would walk into this team.

Double98

2013/14 we lost 5 by more than 1 goal.
So if you want evidence of progression this year there it is.

For me we are 1 goalkeeper away from a title challenge,
Add a solid defensive midfielder to bolster that to a title win
Add A striker to win it at a canter in April.

But, the players have to be hungry and winners, and fit into the team personality wise.

assistantref

This is the only season in the entire BPL (taken off the top of my head – in the last many years certainly) where the winning team won with less than 75 goals. It will not happen again. If you look at past seasons you really need about 85 goals to be a solid title contender. Chelsea being able to win so many games by a single goal is an anomaly of efficiency that will almost certainly not be replicated again.

Our defense is fine. What we need is another 15-20 goals.

Az Ahmed

I think there is truth to both sides if the argument. We conceded silly goals on occasion – Man City at home comes to mind, and failed to be creative on other occasions – Swansea at home – and failed to convert chances – Man Utd 3-1 defeat.

Rich

Hard to disagree, we’ve got a good base of players but if we can improve the team in any position even at the expense of another player we should do it!

We might be releasing/selling C. Jenskinson, A. Diaby, M. Flamini. Question marks over W. Szeczsny and M. Arteta.

Also, wanted to add that we’re forgetting that we bought a young DM last year called K. Bielik who’s 17/18, one for the future, which may or may not influence whether we buy another DM.

AnnArborGooner

I see Jenks sticking around next year (maybe being loaned out another year) but I suspect that his form this year has given Wenger a lot to think about and would suspect he and Bellerin are our 2 left backs of the future as they both offer something different. I don’t know if it’s true but I heard when Bayern are fully fit, he isn’t a starter, while with us he would be a straight starter. Also, if we manage to get Cech, we will be strong contenders. You’re being a bit too dramatic. The point was that the team doesn’t need big changes. A little tinkering, preferably with upgrades in the form of players who already play in England, if at all. Giroud and Welbeck and Walcott if played as striker, are good players. But an Aguerro or Suarez they are not. I think Lukaku would be a serious upgrade. I reckon City will get Ancelotti and Liverpool Klopp – that’ll be interesting and stiffen the competition a bit. So what of the season after that when Wenger’s present contract is up, will there be any desirable and proven managers wanting his job? Funny how media and pundits can get away with their opinions when they are wrong. They are the ones who would be first in line to criticize any bad transfer. Panic buys doesn’t work. Arsene is right. We would need to buy someone who can strengthen our squad. Not just pay 80 mil. and sit on the bench. Thank god, we have Arsene, who we can trust on to make the right move for the future of this club.

Panic buys don’t work: See Arteta, Cazorla and Mertesacker.

Vidal will be coming in. That’ll be it 😉

he’s very correct…apart from Giroud, arsenal doesn’t have a striker that can score on a consistent basis. a defensive mid is also needed to assist coquelin.

Lacazette is definitely better than Giroud. he can dribble past players which Giroud can hardly do. plus he’s faster. he’s can score from shots which Giroud hardly ever does. I think he’s better than Giroud

I like the delivery of that last sentence by Henry. A little bit of mischief in there. Probably said with a tongue in cheek. Classic touche!

I find most everything TH says to be tedious and/or insincere. When he signed his last contract with AFC, he said was a Gunner for life, and that he’d never play in Spain. He then spent the next nine months doing his impersonation of cancer, as the club’s most negative captain ever – moping on the pitch, complaining about his young teammates in the press, and showing by example how not to lead a squad of young players (not unlike his time with NYRB). And then he went to Spain anyways. His excuse for leaving was some nonsense about instability… Read more »

Oh so now we are turning on our legends just because they want Arsenal to actually win the title. Hence the advice from him. He is bang on in my opinion. Chelsea,City and United (The one during SAF) have been winning the league because they have or had class depth. Same goes for all top clubs in the world. We are 2 or 3 signings away from a team that can with the title that too with class. We absolutely need strong competition for Giroud. 3 seasons and you guys are still blind to see he cannot win us the… Read more »

First off, he’s not “our legend”. He might be yours. Don’t speak for others. Secondly, nowhere in my post do I turn on TH for wanting Arsenal to win the title. If you can find such a statement in my post, by all means quote it to me. As for the rest of your comments and Henry’s backtracking: So you say we need some better players and competition? Well golly sakes! Such penetrative, razor-sharp wisdom! Thank you for taking some time out from your important work on the Large Hadron Collider to help AW and the rest of the world… Read more »

There are some good points here but a lot of pap too. This team can win the league with a couple of reinforcements.

Player for player, I have no issue with anyone in front of the GK, where I think there is real scope for improvement.

Another striker is needed to carry the load as much as anything else.

Having said that, I believe Wenger will do what he can and that it will be a good summer.

Title contenders next year.
