That Mesut Ozil. Chancer, spoofer, nicking a living at Arsenal, don’t you know. Except, you know, he isn’t, because he’s quite brilliant.
Even if you’re not a stats man, the numbers don’t lie:
2.71 – Mesut Özil has the best games/assist rate in @PremierLeague history – average one every 2.71 matches. (min. 20 assists) Provider.
— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) October 24, 2015
And having drawn praise from Arsene Wenger after his display against Everton, teammate Olivier Giroud has waxyed lyrical about the German international.
“It was a fantastic ball from Mesut,” he said. “We have a good understanding on the pitch.”
It’s 7 assists now for Ozil, 6 goals for Giroud.
Decent.
There was a time when I happen to watch Real Madrid and there’s one particular big eyed lean player with a black hair strap around his forehead that’s always getting praises for being the provider to Ronaldo/Benzema etc. And he’s barely 24. Thought to myself, oh my if only Arsenal could have him. But my logical mind reminded me, Don’t even dare dream about it, not in a thousand years will you see that happen! The sooner you accept it, the better!
Fast forward 4 years and he’s made Arsenal home. Truly one of ours. Unbelievable.
I remember constantly trying to sign him on Football Manager. It never happened.
Since when is it harder to sign someone on FM than in real life??
That’s because only Arsene can perform miracles like this.
Most talented player in his position since God, no question!
Probably what I’ve loved the most about him this year is even when he’s not having the greatest game he will come up with something and provide the goods. Form is temporary…..we all know the rest!
Greatings from kenya!
Ozil’s pass to Giroud was simply brilliant,
while the one just before Giroud rattled the crossbar was breathtaking to say the least.
he is starting to show why Wenger spent so much to acquire his services.
out of topic:am loving Gabriel’s showing,at this rate he will become one of the best in his position.dnt you love his no nonsense defending.
another gem unearthed by Wenger perhaps??time will tell.
The pass to Giroud for the first goal was truly brilliant. When he gave the pass, I screamed out: Ozil is sweet!
Luckily, the wife was asleep, sparing me from having to explain myself
That cross was truly scrumptious
Absolutely loved Gab’s tackle in the last few minutes – followed by his punching of the air like he’d just scored the winner! I love all the skill we have in the squad but, IMO, what we’ve been missing in recent years is desire, drive and unshakable hunger – Gab’s got these in spades – and it’s rubbing off on the others.
His assists are not the problem, his defensive responsibilities needs work, watch the first oympiacos goal, other players would be murdered for that. Having said that yesterday he put in a complete performance.
I agree the defensive side of his side is an area he can improve but the way you just described him was like he’s some liability we carry around. If that’s what you meant you’re crazy! Every coach and every team in the world would take him in an instant.
No he is not a liability. All I am saying is we forgive some players for weakness in their game and murder others.
Point is, we all don’t know what the boss told him to do. Some players are ordered to stay upfront for possible counter attacks. Not every Player has to Work defensively. When Özil plays as an OM he stays upfront which is only logical if you ask me. In the National Team, where he played a lot on the wings, he did help defensively. You don’t defend with 11 Players.
That’s like saying Petr Cech’s offensive responsibilities need work.
The stats don’t lie… zero goals, zero assists. Luxury player.
Zero key passes aswell, absolute passenger.
He just goddamn sits there the whole game every game except for maybe 5 times per game when he actually does something. That’s worse than Grant Holt!
so going by what you just said an outfield player should stand still waiting for the ball to come to his feet.
Record thumbs down in a single article. Congrats mate!
Hasn’t scored or assisted since we bought him. Only one successful dribble in twelve matches.
Haha. Some people and their expectations huh? Tell you what, the best park the bus manager with a 100 million squad, plays Mesut Ozil every game when he was in charge at Real. This is the same manager who turns Ramires into a shit kicker, expects Hazard to track back every single time and the likes. If he doesn’t see Mesut being a defensive liability I’m not sure where the heck you’re coming from mate.
Go make sweet love to Mourinho
It took so long to believe we actually have in our side. In fact there are times where I still don’t believe it!
Only behind Messi in total assists since 2008 (ahead of Cesc and Ronaldo).
Has Ronaldo assisted anyone in like the last 5 years except maybe by mistake?
Oh man. I thought this was one of the spoof articles.
On the Arsenal website they’re doing free hero printing on the third/cup kit.
Man like Özil is going straight on the back, this is his season.
But they said on TV that he is lazy. :p
Yeah, I remember first seeing him at the World Cup when he was a kid. Such a uniquely gifted player–no one quite like him. The look on Arsene’s face in describing him in yesterday’s post-match presser says it all. He knows how good Ozil is. I also think his style belies how committed he is to the team. He’s played a lot of football lately too and still was working hard to defend the lead late in both matches this week. Last term, despite being injured, he put the time in the gym to be strong enough for this league,… Read more »
I can remember how delighted le Prof was when he first told us Özil was now coming to the Arsenal. He knew then how much he was going to enjoy watching him, and watching how the team would perform with Özil. The thing is, Arsène loves football. For him, it’s the beautiful game, that’s how he sets up his teams to play. That’s why everyone says they love to watch Arsenal when they’re at their best (well, everyone, perhaps, but a certain manager in Fulham). And Özil makes beautiful football, and makes football beautiful to watch. I really think I… Read more »
It’s hard on the streets of Islington, trying to survive as a corner boy.
He’s good for the re-up, keeping one step ahead of the boys in blue.
The Wiz hard!
Comment:nick The Gooner, you said that better than i’ve heard it or thought,
“most talentd player in his position since God”.
Personaly,i’d say one of a kind.
glad he is a gunner.
The media so desperately wanted him to flop. Plenty simply don’t like him (cunts). Others just wanted to do those “Arsenal 45 million dollar flop” headlines (bigger cunts). Unfortunately for them, their attempted media narrative hasn’t actually fitted reality. Ok there have been a couple of down periods for him but mostly he’s been incredible. the guys in the top 10 players in the world. A true genius. how lucky we are to watch him each week.
You hit the nail on the head. The media narrative about Ozil is driven by agenda and not reality
Pure elegance. It’s as simple as that. The most gracious player on the pitch since the grand maestro that is called Zidane.
I wish I could share a .gif of his pass to Giroud for the shot that hit the crossbar. Straight from the movies! Wizard of Öz #YaMesutYa
hi Robstar,
I see what you are pointing at,bt to be fare to Ozil, haven’t you noticed a change in his defensive workrate over the few games we’ve played starting with the game against united??
Against Bayern he left Monreal with two players a couple of times, we were lucky not to be punished. But I wouldnt want to change him.
Quite why anybody pays attention to what anyone says in the press about anything related to football is beyond me. These are the same people who , until very recently, described relentlessly and ad nauseam Mourinho as as a breath of fresh air. Fuck me, how stale must the air be for that walking narcissistic personality disorder to be regarded as a breath of fresh air?
spoken like a wordsmith!,lovely use of words.
Credit where it’s due, the description is borrowed from Alan Davies. The sentiments are all mine though….
For the match against Bayern, the Daily Mirror gave Santi 5/10!!!!!!! At least have a fucking reporter that was actually at the fucking match!!!
hi Like a BOSScielny,
“straight from the movies”
well said!
Every time he is on the ball, I get slightly excited…in a sexual way. Thoroughly enjoy watching him.
One may thnk that only English media wanted to see Ozil flop,bt tell you what?,
The kenyan media was hoping to see that happen desperately!.
Even amidst this great run of form he is enjoying, they somehow manage to find somethng negative to write abt him!
He is the love child of The God and Zidane..
He is the ronaldo of assists. Does Ronaldo do all the defensive shody work at the back….no but when it comes to his job, scoring the goals he excels everytime.
Now as long as Mesut keeps doing his job assisting and just being a boss he deserves a pay rise only from that before we even factor in his defensive duties (which again warrantsanother pay rise!)
He is too good.
But he doesn’t ran araaand enaff! Ptooey! I spit on you self proclaimed football experts! #YaGunnersYa
But can he do it (you guessed it!) on a cold, wet night at Stoke?
You know, I don’t care any longer how many idiots out there think that Ozil is overrated or under-performing or the Premier League’s foremost waste of money. He’s ours. I’m ecstatic he’s ours. And he’ll be one of the main reasons we’re going to win more silverware this season.
If a pundit or a fan isn’t convinced that Ozil is not only world class, but performing as such on the pitch match after match, then they haven’t a clue about football.
That’s right. It can be very liberating to say you know what, I’m not going to care about these idiots, because I don’t have to. I am just going to watch the match and smile.
Am I the only one that thinks if he added a few goals to his game he’d be like bergkamp and pires’ love Child?
I don’t think anyone loves him more than I do, watching him is just like sipping cold juice in a very hot day in my home country Sudan.
I was saw him play against ghana at the fifa world cup in south Africa then he scored a spectacular volley from the edge of the eighteen yard box and I was like Arsenal could do with a player like that
Superb headline.
The only reason the press, other fans, papers etc.. Are saying Özil is a flop and no good, is because they want him to fail, they want Arsenal to fail, and especially want him to fail because he cost us a lot of money. But the beautiful thing is, every game Özil plays, every ball he touches, is rubbing a little bit more salt in the wounds of those moronic journalists and so called football experts. Besides, it is no coincidence Arsenal have started to win trophies again, exactly when he joins, and repeat it last year. And both years… Read more »
off topic though, but you gunners deserve to know ” chelsea is naive and weak”
