Wenger: Swansea win shows progress

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Swansea today is a sign that his team has made progress, as they remain level on points with Man City at the top of the Premier League table.

Three second goals from Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny and Joel Campbell ensured the valuable points were earned against a team which have proved to be tricky opponents in the past.

“They took six points off us last year,” said the manager, “and that shows we’ve moved forward. The second half we were a different team. After we scored the first goal it was all us and there was only one winner on the pitch.

“I feel they offered a lot in first half, then technically we were on top and we upped our pace in the second half and from then on it was more difficult for them.”

“The less we talk and more we play the better we play – that’s our job. The second goal didn’t look a foul to me, honestly, but I have to watch it again as it’s difficult to see from outside.”

It also means that we’ve kept clean sheets in 6 of our 11 Premier League games so far this season. Not too shabby.

Injury crisis? What injury crisis? We’re all behind you, Mr Wenger. Too long without the title, so let’s band together, coaches, players and fans, to make this the year that everything changes.

Jijo

All we have to do is.. Just take the lead in the game. Doesn’t matter at what moment in the game. Just get in front! Defense is solid. Just absorb the pressure, and we know how to rip a team apart when the opponent is chasing the game.!

Getso gunner

I think Arsenal will win the EPL and Chelsea will escape relegation

A kick in the Debuchy

I had to at least consider a thumb-down for the bit about Chelsea escaping relegation, but if that’s the Yin to our Yang, then so be it. COYG!

Highberry

I really hope they keep maureen as manager and they just avoid going down. After all the crap we’ve had to listen to from that tosspot its wonderful just watching him say “I have nothing to say” over and over again.Still smiling like a stuffed otter this happy gooner is ready for yet another week of schadenfreude. Chavski and Maureen, the gifts that just keep on giving COYG

bsinGooner

The best thing about today’s match was Campbell. When so many people trusted him for that starting place over other options like moving players around, he repaid them all and how!

Miranda

As the manager of the Costa Rica national team expressed it:

‘Who is Messi?
Who is Neymar?
Gentlemen of the Press, I present to you: Joel Campbell. I discovered him playing with cans.’

David C

To be honest, if he keeps that up he offers a much better defensive option to a Walcott or Ox whenever we want to close things down a bit.

Ferngunner

Okay people need to relax.

GoonerN16

Fu*$k Chels$i who cares? Loathsome team, loathsome manager… end of….

Kirk the 70s pin up

Is there a reason the above comment was thumbed down. Surely nobody can honestly disagree?

Canon Fodder

I think it’s the unnecessary foul language that could be the reason for the thumbs down. It is possible to be put a point across without using industrial language

Chris P Fried

Fuck that, he’s talking about Chelski

Arsepedant

No foul language directed at Chel$ki can ever be called unnecessary.

Kirk the 70s pin up

Please. This is just a comment. We are adults and there is censorship in the only swear word. Comment is spot on and deserves thumbs up all round

Gooner balls

Maybe that’s why it’s thumbed down.. Why is the insult censored? We’re already censoring the really bad word – Chel$ki.

gooner 44

bollocks

Dan D

I am often mystified by some of the thumbing down that goes on here.

Everyone is of course entitled to their opinion but I am left scratching my head a fair amount.

In this instance surely they must be Chelsea fans ironically voyeuring on a rival clubs’ blog?

Ferngunner

It’s Chels** from now on like Sp*rs.

and

…and Chelsea are gonna be absolute sheet, pls believe me

Pedant

We were rubbish last season v the S clubs ie Spurs Stoke Swansea Southampton. So are doing far better. Let’s hope we beat Spurs next week.

Pedant

Especially as the run of games after that are relatively ‘easy’.

duno

We are definitely making progress. This is the type of game we would have lost in previous seasons. Shout out to Joel Campbell. I felt his joy, prove them doubters wrong buddy. Get in!

Rob67

Was Campbell any good ? He scored so that must lift his confidence and he was very close in the first half according to Tommo in the sky Studio……

Arsepedant

Campbell was very good. Head and shoulders different from his last match (and indeed all his other matches for us). If he can keep up that level of performance, then his critics (myself included) are going to be proven very, very wrong. And I will be very happy to be eating that large helping of crow.

gunner pundit

Cech – Best keeper in the league
Koscielny – Best defender in the league
Ozil – Best playmaker in the league (top assister)
Sanchez – Sanchez
Arsenal – Title WINNERS

“Sanchez – Sanchez”

Best comment of the day.

Rufusstan

In a class of his own…

Gooneron

Arsenal fans – Best (Most loyal) fans in the league

Pearson

You left a few names out, they have all been “outstanding” except Mertesacker. He has just been “very good”

bsinGooner

The way Giroud used BFG as a decoy was absolutely amazing.

Also, its great to see Campell scoring in his first PL start. When everyone trusted him for the spot on the right over other options like moving players around, it was great to see him repaying them all and how!

Rufusstan

The’ three men in a column’ we’ve been using at corners seems pretty new, and appears to give us a lot of threat.

When you have the BFG, Giroud and Kos so close together in the box its hard to cover them. And harder to follow them all when they break as the ball comes in.

Arsepedant

They’ve got so many different ways to break, too. Against Everton, Giroud cut in front of Mertesacker who then blocked off the marker trying to follow him. Today, Mertesacker broke and Giroud grabbed his shirt – and two defenders converged! I’m sure that shirt-tug was rehearsed time and again in training, and it worked a treat, didn’t it! I can’t wait to see what neat little trick they pull out of the bag next match.

TexasGooner

I did not know what to think when I saw Giroud pull BFG’s shirt when the corner was kicked – but it worked out beautifully! This must have been rehearsed in training ground!

Even if Campbell had not scored, he was getting good grades for his defensive work rate, his confidence to shoot on goal and overall effort. Even during periods in the first half where Arsenal looked lethargic, he stood out as the one player making the runs and giving 100%. Keep it up Joel!

roswelch

I wonder if any journalist ever follows up when mangers say things like “Ill have to see the replay, was difficult to see…”. 🙂 Well lets keep this train going, have a good feeling about this season – fingers crossed.

Man Manny

This team is matured! We gave them the Watford Treatment – give them false security after 45 mins and blow them away in the 2nd half.

Ajinkya

Bellerin’s pace is absolute dynamite. I just loved how he kept running like crazy to reach Gomis. WOW!! And I am so very glad Madrid let Ozil come to us. I still can’t sometimes believe Alexis and Ozil play for us after watching our players go the other way over so many years. It’s time to believe this year. Only thing that can hamper us is our injuries. Please, no more. And the sweetest thing is watching that Cheslea cunt lose. If this was the other way around, that sly prick would have come up with some digs at our… Read more »

Nothing to say. No. I’ve nothing to say. That’s right- nothing to say.

Mlh

Best post game interview I’ve ever heard.

dldc

For all the talk about Arsenal training methods I think a big factor in this game as well as the game at Watford was conditioning. In both games the other side had tons of energy in the first half then seemed beat by the 70th minute. At Watford guys were walking around with hands on their knees. Today Swansea just seemed so much slower at the end and the break that dude took to drink water showed just how tired he was.

Johnson GICHUKI

Proud of whole Team. Special thanks to Hector and Joel Campbell.Asante Sana!

Nick

It needs to be said – Cech is keeping us in the game, every game. He’s pretty easily the player of the season so far.

Bellerin fan

The thing with been classless is that at a point, you think you are winning buh a time comes when you will be taught a lesson in humility so that you’ll then have “nothing to say”. Can’t stop laughing at chelshit

Up the arse

With special thanks to Mourinho for today’s loss. A specialist in failure. What goes around comes around you arrogant twat! Well done Arsenal, almost make top of the league!

Ankeet Sinha

I called it 3-0 😉

i know wenger was like a broken record for years going on and on about team spirit and whatnot, but i think you see the importance of it when an often criticised fringe player can come in and do as good a job as campbell did today, it makes that transition a lot easier and less pressurized- imagine a lad coming on for chelsea at the minute haha! Football to savour right now, Hector Bellerin and Coquelin two of my favourite things about football right now, that thrilling feeling of excitement and optimism replacing hope around the whole club- Autumn’s… Read more »

Almost felt for Cesc earlier.. ALMOST.

He came on and boom.. 2 goals against them.

Canon Fodder

Where is Fat Gooner by the way? Does he only appear when we do badly? An apt song for him should be: ‘You only cheer when we’re losing…’

Arigoon

He’s only happy when it rains. 😉 To be fair, he does have some good points from time to time. I just cannot wrap my head around the fact that he throws his reasoning out the window when it comes to Wenger. It seems, there’s nothing that could convince him the man is doing a good job when it’s evident there has been huge progress since the financial shackles have come off. Who knows if we’re gonna be at the top when the season’s over, it’s still a loooong way to go. But I don’t care. I’m proud that we… Read more »

I would say “no one cares” but you asked the question, so I’ll say “No one apart from you cares!”.

AnonymousGun

He probably got nothing to say.

Nez

He can’t be here for we did well,he(fatgooner)always sing the song of sorrow!

Trez

“The less we talk and more we play the better we play – that’s our job”.
That’s more like it Wenger. Actions speaks louder than words.
With this mentality, we have a HUGE chance to win the league. Still early days though; if we’re still in the top 2 come March-April, then we really can pull it off.

AnthonyG

Well, that was damned impressive. Thank eff Giroud was OK. Onwards.

santori

Chelsea fan who told me Moanrinho was right to sell Cech. Absolutely spot on and for only 11m quid.:D Meanwhile the media went on about how Wenger needed to sign a world class striker and how we were the ‘only’ team not to sign an ‘outfield’ player. Well… we are but four goals off of City. We have the joint meanest defense in the league. We have not been shy of scoring. OG is 4 in 5 games not including 2 on International duty. EVEN Campbell is scoring. He should get out while he can.;) Goes to show how little… Read more »

Think our game has changed.
We’re now comfortable without the ball for periods of the game.
Let’s all pull together to bring the title back to n5.

We seem to love a 3-0 right now

SHHP with VPL

Looking for a 0-1 v. The Germans on Wednesday. Park the bus, get one on a corner or something and fake a bunch of injuries for the interlull.

Shubham

Long may the 3-0 results continue. Need such scores against Spurs, Saints, Stoke…
COYG!

NYGooner

What impressed me most about Campbell was his defensive contribution. He seemed to do a great job of anticipating opponent passes and sticking a foot in. Often we won the ball, but at worst it disrupted the opponent’s flow. Several times he tracked back to team up with Bellerin to double up an opponent, and this was very successful in winning the ball as well. Great work rate; hope he can keep it up.
