Ramsey and Cech talk Villa win and title challenge

After Arsenal’s impressive 2-0 win at Aston Villa Petr Cech and man-of-the-match Aaron Ramsey faced the Sky Sports cameras. Here’s what they had to say…

On the importance of winning…

AR: It was really important for us to finish off a good week. We’ve done the job today and took advantage of the possibility of going top of the league again. We’re delighted with that.

On being in control throughout…

PC: I think we were in control. It’s always difficult when you have a great performance and a massive win in midweek and then you have to switch back to the Premier League. I think we’ve done really well today to be focused and resolute at the back to get a clean sheet and to get the goals we needed. They [Villa] had nothing to lose in the second half but overall we controlled the game to get three points.

On scoring today…

AR: It was obviously nice to be there to finish off the move. It was a great move from us, we’ve seen there was an opportunity to get forward and it’s a great ball by Theo in the first pace and then the vision of Ozil to play me in to have a tap in was delightful as well. I’m delighted I was there to finish it off. [Tackling] is part of the job in the middle and I’m delighted I started it [the move] as well.

On equalling David James’ Premier League clean sheets record…

PC: It’s an unbelievable personal achievement and I hope that the final number [of clean sheets] continues to grow. Obviously I hope it continues to help us to stay top of the league and to have a chance to fight for the title. That would be magnificent.  I’m delighted to have equalled the record but I’m more delighted with the three points.

On Arsenal’s belief they can win the title…

AR: Of course we believe we have an opportunity. We’ve shown so far what we’re capable of doing and we just have to continue doing what we’re doing now. This is a busy part in the season and we have to maintain our focus and belief and get through this period. Who knows what can happen in the second half. We feel we can challenge for trophies and we’ll be up for it.

Ramsey was just fantastic today, have enough rest guys and beat mancity for us nextweek

adamaltogether

I’m delighted that everyone is delighted

Pedant

Both top players, we are lucky to have them (and Ozil, Sanchez, Kos etc etc).

Gudag Bedil

Giroud 50 goals, Ramsey back to his best, Cech cleansheet record, top of the league. What a day!

Flying Dutchman

Add spurs losing to that and it becomes even better…

Getso gunner

Congratulations Petr Cech

David C

Well played by the entire team! Big 6 point match next week with Sanchez off the bench maybe!

I guess we are cheering for Chelsea to win tomorrow? Can we do that? Maybe a tie with both teams ending the game in a massive brawl suspending a half a dozen from each side. Oh and John Terry injuries what’s left of his soul during the game and decides he can never play again.

Perry S.

a draw is a better result. we don’t want those Chavs getting too much confidence and 2 extra points.

Paul

Actually a strong Chelski would be a nice weapon against our close competitors as the blues are too far behind to worry us!

Flirty Sanchez

I want Leicester to thrash Chelsea.

I’m sure most Arsenal fans would agree.

Paul

It seems they do!
Too much hate on here imo.
Don’t get me wrong, Maureen is a thundercunt but…

Stewart Robson's therapist

Given that we can clearly thrash Leicester again in the return fixture as we did at their place, I’m still cheering them on. Fuck Chelsea. Fuck Mourinho.

Finsbury Park Gooner

Leicester win all day long please! The worse the chavs fuck it up this season the better.

Clock-End Mike

It’s worth remembering that we’re the only team to have beaten Leicester so far this season.

Of the five top 8 teams they’ve played so far, they’ve only been away to West Ham, the others were all at home, and they drew with United and Sp*rs. They play Liverpool away on Boxing Day then Citeh at home 2 days later. I’d be quite happy if they continue beating lower-league teams, especially those with obnoxious Portuguese managers.

Stewart Robson's therapist

Ramsey blowing a kiss to the camera at the end gave me goosebumps. Just seemed so symbolic of the confidence flowing through this team at the moment, while all our rivals flounder around us.

Mabiribobi

Ha ha I can NEVER cheer for a Chelsea win!

Tony Hall

A Chelsea win *wash your mouth out* lol
A draw will do nicely

A Yank in King Arsene's West Stand

“Delightful” is the new “ever so well” in the Aaron Ramsey press pack, apparently!! 😀

Goonersmurf

I’m delighted

Conchetumadre

Nicely done by Ramsey, Cech, Giroud and the rest.
Mission accomplished away from home and extremely valuable 3 points.

Paul

Arsene would want Chelski to win…he is above being affected by jibes and hate imo.

Cas

Well I am not Arsene plus I am absolutely certain Leicester will be off the top come January, so Chelsea losing the game isn’t a bad result imo. We are top of the league by the way, beat City (who are our main rivals for the title) and that would give us a little breathing space. #COYG

Paul

So you think Chelski have more chance of winning the Premiership than Leicester?
..and thanks for letting me know our league position. 😉

Stewart Robson's therapist

I’m not. I always want them to lose, I hate them. Unless they’re playing Tottenham, in which case the preferable scenario would be for a massive sinkhole to swallow the lot of them.

Яков Аршавин

I thumb you up for that.

That’s what I’ll call good riddance to very bad rubbish

TamilTiger

Let’s hope for a Leicester win tomorrow
Never ever hope for chelshit win

Ozil's eyes

We still lack that ruthlessness and hunger of scoring a lot of goals

CJ

you’re right; we should have absolutely no mercy on whoever we are playing and just totally fuck em up.
instills even greater fear in teams that play us.

that’s the true mentality of champions. a la bayern.

Mustrum Ridcully

Given a hard midweek game and key players injured, I can’t blame the team taking it easy when two nil up. Might be different if there were fewer injuries.

Ozil's eyes

We feed on our prey like a group of chickens. We should pounce on our prey/feed like angry lions

i miss kanu

when Ramsey starts putting in MOTM
performances you know we are going somewhere good. it seems we have two arsenals this season and both can win this thing.

shokim

I’m delighted with the delightful win. It’s so nice!

santori

We have to big ourselves up and believe we can do it because the media discount our chances. Just yesterday Jason Roberts (another average player turn pundit) on the BBC would deem to list the title contenders and conveniently missed us out of the equation. I’m not sure what all this nonsense about an open league title challenge is all about. 3 of the usual suspects are in the top 4. Last season we could easily say Chelsea had it easy bc United were still in reconstruction, Arsenal blew away the first half of season and City were erratic. This… Read more »

And then you have the likes of Jurgen Klopp celebrating a draw to West Brom at home.

What have Liverpool come to? They are a team forever in a ‘revolution’, for ever according to their apologetic media friends in ‘transition’.

Mid table. Spent tons of money (media prescribed) on strikers to show ‘ambition’.

Has the best motivational manager in the world and still in and around Everton somewhere in the middle.

santori

Talk about lack of world class striker. Where are United without Rooney? Yet the media said they did better than us in transfer window because they splurges 250m quid. 36m for Martial is a better deal they said ignoring Alexis which Wenger got for 35m Giroud has been outstanding so far. His movement and touch around the box is artistry. What is never spoekn off as well is fluency in the team that can only come with sufficient time playing together. You add a new player in and it takes time to gel the new player. Wenger has tried to… Read more »

Shubham

A performance with the handbrakes on but still effective. The mid week game in Greece had taken its toll on the energy level. However, there is no denying that the team wanted to win. I am starting to fear for Bellerin. He is fading out drastically and Theo is very rusty. Hope both gather themselves quickly because mistakes against City will be punished. Don’t need any setback in our title charge now. COYG!
