Wenger reflects on finishing second

Amazingly, this season is Arsenal’s highest finish in the league since 2005. It feels a bit weird because it’s been such a frustrating campaign, but there you go, football is a funny old game.

That’s very true today, because what happened was really, really funny, but it’s slightly confusing too considering the context of the season as a whole.

Speaking after the game, Arsene Wenger reflected on how the season panned out and where we ended up.

“We are second in the league and we want to be first,” he said. “But if you are not first, you might as well be 10th or 12th.

“You might as well say that first is good and the rest is rubbish. In sport, when you work in a football club you know that every win you have to fight and prepare more. We want to win more. We want to be first.

“You have to say Leicester have had a sensational championship because they only lost three games,” he continued.

“It’s not only us who are behind Leicester. We have beaten them twice so you should ask that question to all the other teams. We are not happy by being second, but 18 other teams who finished below us would be happy to be in our position.

“Of course our target was to be first. For a while we believed we could do it.”

And while he wouldn’t necessarily laugh at Tottenham, not in the same way we would, there was still an understanding of what today meant.

“Today, we could only play with the target we had and the only one we had before the game was to finish second. We achieved it.

“For a while our supporters have not been going home happy from here – at least today they had some satisfaction.”

Spursy – To consistently and inevitably fail to live up to expectations. To bottle it. My team only got to the last 16 — they’re a bit spursy

Viva la Prof

Defiantly satisfied, let Leicester have their cake. All those spuds feel like Cunts, that’ll do me amigos

memories of good ol’ days by a good ol’ gunner, fuck I miss 10 years ago. the feeling. the Highbury. the Thierry Henryyy!! shouldnt have trusted american businessmen with our one and only Arsenal. still wishing for Emirates (hate the name though) to have its own history of many glorious years.

Got what I wished for, 2nd and above all spuds are below us where they belong ??

Brilliant day really! I’ts happened again 🙂

It’s weird we finished 2nd place. Spuds are truly shit. Even us at our worst would never get killed by 5-1 with 10 men. It would’ve been 8…crazy game. But we gotta say they are getting better and painful to say, closing the gap. We have to do better next season and have better balance.

Chamakh

They have to deal with the packed fixture list that being in the champions league brings. No more resting players on thursdays. Same applies for Leicester, doubt they have the resources to cope with both. Also that is why United and Chelsea can be dangerous next season as they are not in the CL. Possibly liverpool, depending if they win that cup.

Gunnermite

Imagine Spurs finishing second in the league for the past twenty years.

PJ

we would have came in 1st! tottenhahahahahahahaha!

No one put any additional votes either up or down on Gunnermite’s comment.

Let’s keep it at 5-2

once you get past the fact that this season was wide open for the winning, this was a bant-astic way to end it.

Hmm, Arsenal are a bit spursy then going by that definition?

gee

have you seen their trophy cabinet? you cant compare us to the spuds

Yet again, so near, yet so far. I am quite pleased with the result, however can’t help but wondering if we didn’t have that extra gas in the tank to beat three or four teams to close the 10 point difference between us and Leicester. Maybe not having progressed in the champions league or FA cup could have actually been better for us, oh well fuck it, I’m overall happy with the final outcome, but for a long period of time, I’ve felt quite low this season, yesterdays victory, artetas winning goal, spuds imploding more than amply make up for… Read more »

Great result and thoroughly amusing, but does not really make up for the disappointment of a huge opportunity missed. In a season when everyone apart from Leicester have been shit, we should have gone much closer to the title. Just hope Arsene has learned from this and does not sit on his hands this summer.

So this Mauricio Cappuccino is supposed to be better than Wenger, eh? He can motivate his team to fight to death for him, eh?

santori

There’s listening to the media for you. They were gloating about how Spurs were so fantastic, team of the year with Leicester….a bit premature me thinks. So they say Arsenal flatter to deceive because the other teams have been poor, by that measure Spurs flatter to deceive too. Or United, or Liverpool should they not win their cups or City or Chelsea. We just won two FA cups in the last two seasons. This season has been disappointing but far from the ‘worse ever’. We’ve finished second and nicked it off Spurs who imploded to a ten man Newcastle side… Read more »

A very valid point is made here. It seems that whenever a result goes against us, the media jump on the Arsenal hate bandwagon and the supporters jump on too.

We are not as sh1t as we are led to believe.

Whisht

So Wenger – we failed to get ANY silverware this season.

Not even the 4th place trophy.

And what’s worse is that every time Arsenal are mentioned, people start laughing.

I hope you’re happy.
