Giroud talks to Le Figaro – full transcript

Olivier Giroud will lead the line for France tonight as they kick-off Euro 2016 against Romania. For the Arsenal striker it will be a special moment, all the more so given the slow and winding route he’s taken to the top of international football.

On the eve of the tournament, the Gunner sat down for a chat with Le Figaro…we’ve done our best to translate it.

What’s your first memory of Les Bleus?

France vs Bulgaria in 1993 at the Parcs des Princes when Kostadinov stopped us from going to the World Cup in the USA. I was just seven and it was my first sad experience of Les Bleus. A bad memory [laughs].

Who is you childhood idol?

Jean-Pierre Papin! He was an attacker, like me, so that was inevitably appealing. But not just that. He used to do beautiful ‘Papinades’ [a spectacular, airborne volley usually from an unusual angle] that I always tried to reproduce as a kid with my friends. Even now in training there’s a few who’ll testify to my bicycle kick…but I break my back every time when I fall [laughs]. I don’t forget Zidane either who made me, like everybody else, dream in 1998.

Was it a family ritual to watch France games?

Completely. In 1998 my support was unconditional. It really is the first competition that I followed with real fervor. As a family we used to wear the red, white and blue face paint. On 12 July 1998 [night of the final vs Brazil] we took to the street celebrating the success.

Where were you when France won Euro 2000?

In the United States with my club. I was 14 and despite the time difference it was crazy. We partied like crazy. These two events marked my childhood and more than anything confirmed to me that I wanted to be a footballer.

At this point were you already dreaming of the French team?

Not at all! I couldn’t even imagine a quarter of that. Inevitably, you have dreams in your head, visions of what you want to do, like all youngsters in football, but to think I’d actually get called up, I never thought that.

Talk about your career in football…

I didn’t sign for a club at 17 even after years on the training ground. I was not destined for a career that was mapped out, I had to go and get her. I’m proud of my carer. My progress, it’s a little silly to say but it’s the case, has always been step by step. I’ve known important stages moving the National league to Ligue 2 then Ligue 1 with Montpellier. It’s the same with Franck Ribery, Mathieu Valbuena and Lolo [Laurent Koscielny], they’ve experienced an unusual path to Les Bleus and it’s happening more and more.

When you were in Ligue 2 with Tours did a national team call up seem impossible?

Completely. My goal at the time [2008-10] was to become top scorer. You can imagine that I didn’t think at all about the France team [smiles]. At this moment my ambition was to play in Ligue 1 and in England. With Les Bleus…when I started to score regularly in Ligue 1 I heard murmurs about a call-up. But it took a while.

How did you find out?

My coaches at Montpellier, René Girard and Pascal Baills, let slip when I was coming out of the gym that I’d be getting a call. I was crazy. I got chills.

Is it a strength to have ‘struggled’ compared to your peers and opponents?

Yes, certainly. It allows me to keep things in perspective. I’m aware of how privileged I am to have seized my chance. One could say I’ve a lucky star above my head.

In November 2011, you played at the Stade de France for the first team in the France shirt. Tell us about that…

The shirt was heavy to wear [laughs]! You’re thinking about your family, your relatives, you shiver when you hear your name read aloud in the stadium. It wasn’t easy to sleep the day before the match. I’ll keep my first jersey for the rest of my life. Nobody will take it.

And your first Marseillaise?

Again, it was a great moment. It had a special meaning because I’d learnt the anthem by heart with my grandmother when I was a child. Her name is Antonia, she’s of Italian origin. I was only 10 years old but she was adamant that I mastered the words perfectly and understood the meaning of each sentence. I was instilled with these values and they have meaning today. It’s a beautiful memory.

Despite the criticism, you continue to be selected for the national team. You march on with pride…

Possibly. I attach great importance to one of my mottos, told to me by my brother. “Building the road to success never stops.” Even in football, where after every weekend, you can fall down or be congratulated. We have to prove we want to score goals, to win titles. And to make history. This is what I want. I want to make my family proud.

What’s your goal at this Euros, to make history with France?

Sure. We’re representing all France and it’s our duty to give the maximum and make the public proud. When you play the Euros at home it makes sense to leave a mark in history with the France team. There is a big expectation, but we’re ready. The challenge excites me. When the competition starts, it’ll be enormous. I don’t currently need sleeping pills to sleep, I’m hoping I won’t [smiles].

Are you facing the biggest challenge of your career?

Yes. The pressure is on but it shouldn’t inhibit us. I’m eager to get back to the Stade de France to play Romania and open the campaign.

What’s your dream?

It was Platini’s destiny to score nine goals in the Euros [in 1984], that’s huge. The fate of David Trezeguet was to score the golden goal against Italy in 2000. It’s not bad! It would suit me well to be honest. I’d sign up for that to happen immediately. Whether it’s more or another player. Winning the Euros is our common goal.

Kostadinov’s goals remains one of the best ones scored by a Bulgarian ever. A must see. In the last minute and all of that.

Yavor

Amazing memories, my friend! 🙂

Redside

Love giroud he’s in a rich vein of scoring 6 in 3 got on him top goal scorer at Euro s at 16/1

French football crowd

Undeserved booooo

Chris

You owe me cornflakes and a new keyboard. 😀

Love Giroud’s attitude.

He gets a ridiculous amount of stick for a player of his ability and for someone with such a decent goals/assists output. Hope he is the top scorer at Euro 2016.

thw14

He’s a really good striker and articles like this just reinforce the fact that he’s unfairly a lightning rod for criticism for basically not being Henry.

If only Wenger would sign a world class first choice, Arsenal fans have never been reluctant to embrace and give more than due credit to quality squad players like Kanu or (lesser extent Wiltord).

Özorlexisey

HFB is not only looks but also mind. Seems to be a nice bloke and is really replying those boos with performances on the pitch.Hope you can drive your teams to the titles,be it at national or club level.

Ox in the Box

I for one am proud to have Giroud as a first striker in Arsenal team. I don’t care about people saying he is not good enough and bellitle him saying he is like a good backup striker. To me, he is a great striker and I think at one point he will go down an Arsenal great, even if (so, so many) people consider this unthinkable.

Go Giroud, go France!

Riyan

I really respect Giroud. Sure, he’s not the World Class striker we all want, but that’s not his fault. He’s the best we have, and whatever you say about him, he always does his best. Really nice guy, and I really hope he has a great Euros! He deserves some things going his way.

Dawn

he IS world class to me!

Blitz Bailey

Typical our luck that he would enter another scoring cycle when the season is over 😛 Hope he does well though. I’m of the opinion that we need a new striker, But i think you can have that opinion without spewing hate on Giroud. He is doing his best and he is hardly at fault for Wenger’s choices.

Lord Bendtner

Euro 200, going to practice every day while the empires around you are at war. Requires great strength and determination.

OneBeatOff

What?

assistantref

Euro 200 actually occurred during a period of relative stability. Euro 476 would not have been so great to be at, though. They think football crowds were rowdy in the 70s, in the 470s they burned down the whole damn city.

vino

Going to be interesting to see how he fares against top defences with supply from Griezmann and Payet. They seem to each have assets that play to his strengths, set-pieces and quick link up play. Arguably the most balanced front three in the tournament.

Jamie Vardinho

I feel sorry for the guy. He gets alot of flack from fickle Arsenal and France fans, Everyone, including himself knows he’s not a “world class scorer” But his international goalscoring record is better than Benzema, and unlike Benzema he doesn’t have a cunty face and seems alot more humble and less prone to blackmailing team-mates over sex tapes. And his 1 in 2 record for Arsenal is great, and he’s a good team player, you can tell he cares about the club. We all want a better striker but Giroud has served as faithfully as a relatively consistent striker… Read more »

Godfrey Twattschlock

But he’s not world class and for that he must be punished.

Dawn

he IS world class to many in the know!

jesse

hahahahah! That celebration!!! Always wondered whats up with that in fifa16.

heihaci

Giroud just hasn’t been good enough for Arsenal recently FACT so getting flack from Arsenal fans is justified IMO

Tim

Writing “fact” in capitals doesn’t actually make it so.

Jamie Vardinho

No one is disputing that that barren run was ridiculous but on balance and averaged out across his entire season, he IS a good player.

I personally think he was getting more and more worn out, with virtue of him being pretty much our main striker the whole season and that contributed to the drought.

thebetterJFK

It’s hardly Giroud’s fault for our second place finish when he’s still our top scorer after a three month drought

meletios

Oh no he said ‘FACT’ in caps, I have no choice but to believe your fact now…

damobot

Its stupid to say that he is at fault for our lack of goals this season, when Ramsey and walcott scored 20 more goals couple of seasons back plus Welbeck and Sanchez scored more last season. So the blame should be shared among them as they are our main source of goals

Third Plebeian

Love Giroud. Proud that an Arsenal player is leading the line for one of the better teams in the tournament.

assistantref

Giroud’s a very good striker who gets slagged off for not being absolutely great. It’s hard not to feel for the guy. He’s about the fifth best striker in the PL playing for a team that is used to having the 1st or 2nd best striker in the PL. But that’s not his fault.

Dawn

He’s not greedy and doesn’t think he should have all the chances to score! If he was. he’d take the penalties and free kicks (like the ‘top 4’ you mentioned) and stuff Ozil and Alexis!

Coq au Vin

ALLEZ LES BLEUS!!!

Je m’excuse but I had to do it.

Arsepedant

Giroud is a class act, and good on him for ignoring all the fickle haters amongst both Arsenal and France “supporters”. I’ve got a tenner at 15/1 on Giroud being top scorer.

My name is Jeff

And he scores!!!

Third Plebeian

First goal of the tournament! Well done, Ollie!

santori

Giroud as per usual criticised by some rather ill informed people. He has been on a scoring streak for the National team. It may not have been a prettygoal but itw as effective none the less and he made it happen. 25 goals this season 16 in the league. 20 goals + for last 3 seasons = Consistency. The better comparison/question is what are we getting from Welbeck or Walcott (injury not withstanding) The commentator on the tally was again laying in on Olivier having missed his third chance and I said to the bloke next to me that Giroud’s… Read more »

Payet. What I’d give to see him in Arsenal colours. He won’t be staying around the East End for much longer. His price must be a good 60m quid higher now. Fantastic footwork, sublime vision and what a superbly taken goal (Two footed too) I was just commenting how insipid the French midfield were because Pogba was (but for a few deep passes) largely ineffective and did not stamp enough control. Kante and Blaise were good but similar. Options on the bench were also limited Cabaye being IMO overrated as Schneiderlin. Deschamp did a brave move switching Payet to float… Read more »

Granit on show tomorrow. Bellerin may get a chance with Spain. Maybe Jack might get a shoe in. There may be a less ‘glamorous’ striker that may show himself. All very interesting. As I mentioned, Euro is a double edge sword. Those who hold out would like to think they will have a good tournament but it may also work against them. As us. But for sure, there may be surprise names that will reveal themselves (and in Copa too) particularly to fill at Cback but also up top. Should we spend on someone like a Payet (I’d be happy… Read more »

And as I have always mentioned, the difference between lower leagues and the top end is slight. Some of these Romanian players are playing in second division Spain or even Qatar but can give as good as they get. Not that we should be shopping in this realm at this point of time given the quality already in our squad but we should also do well to remember say where the likes of Koscielny, MOnreal or indeed Giroud have come from. That said, I think Wenger needs to buy ‘ready made’ because we do not have need for numbers anymore.… Read more »

8 goals in last 6 International appearances for France. 24 goals 16 in league this season for us. By way of contrast Walcott at his best scored only 21 in all competitions, Alexis weighed in at 26. Giroud scores 20+ goals for us consistenly last 3 seasons and weighs in with a healthy aount of assists acting as an important enabler. The problem is not Giroud. The problem is apart from him, Welbeck and Walcott are not pulling their weight whether it is injury issues or otherwise. When Giroud went on his barren spell, Alexis was not scoring either and… Read more »

Didn’t just score, he was immense in that game. Set up two or three other chances that various players duly fluffed. Strong all night, really led the line. Can’t ask for anything more. Hope those morons stop booing him after that.

Raphael2

Olivier Giroud is quite a fantastic striker that we have at the moment. In fact he works magic at some time and makes every individual happy. I remember the Bayern Muchen Arsenal game when he applied his bicycle kick to console us after we had been hammered 5! Let the Arsenal and France fans stop discouraging him through their disgusting booos! they aren’t any better!

Mustrum Ridcully, Unseen Academicals

Well done Olivier!

All the talk of Brady, let us not forget that Giroud has had similar struggles to get into the top flight!

At every level, he has shown improvement to achieve the standard. Let us hope he can improve again to be a great international striker.

Remember, Zlatandoes not have pace and neither does Benzema. Tedd6 Sherringham had no pave but was a very effective striker because of his reading if the game. Let’s hope Olivier can improve in this way.

Mustrum Ridcully, Unseen Academicals

Meant Vardy not Brady. Bloody predicted to be text!

Jamie Vardinho

Your phone doesn’t want us to sign Vardy it seems.

Mabiribobi

I hope you finish as topscorer at the euros and come back next season to lead us to a few trophies and score more than twenty

Dawn

Olivier Giroud is an amazing man and footballer! He has so many qualities and is so underrated! Just reading this interview shows he is as beautiful on the inside as he is on the outside! Good luck in everything you do Ollie, you are my hero!
