Arsenal linked with swoop for French full-back

According to L’Equipe, Arsenal have approached Lille with an offer for Djibril Sidibe.

The 23-year-old, a player who has operated on both sides of the defence and in midfield during his time at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, had been due to finalise a €15 million move to AS Monaco before reportedly having his head turned by the Gunners.

Sidibe moved to Lille in 2012 from Troyes and is a regular in the first team. He was on standby for Didier Deschamps’ France team ahead of EURO 2016.

Our friends at Get French Football News suggest there may be something fishy about the timing of the deal; an agent possibly planting the story to hurry negotiations with Monaco.

With that in mind, we’re going for a seven on the poo-o-meter. We’re pretty well stocked for full-backs right now.

Assuming Mathieu Debuchy is going, if Kieran Gibbs leaves (possible) and Calum Chambers goes on loan (plausible) then we might not be all that well stocked by the time the season rolls around?

Trez

If Gibbs and chambers leave, then we replace them with a cb and a young lb. If we sign this guy, I assure you wenger will not sign any other defender and we all know we need a cb more than anything.

adriano

I’ve been sort of confused about this for a while. Appears almost a consensus that we need a new CB.
But why? We have Kos, Gabriel, Per (best 3rd choice in the Prem, easily) and then Chambers (possibly best 4th choice in the league).
Gabriel played well and should be even better next season.
We’re not signing a CB.

JB

Were you even watching the games in the second half of last season ??

Gabriel played awful. He’s not a first choice CB for Arsenal. His positional sense as a CB is woeful, cost us too many goals. This team can do better for a first choice defender. Gab and Per as back ups no problem.

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

What about Jenkinson ? He is injured but he will be back. If Wenger wants to replace Gibbs as a backup them all this makes sense. Now, if Gibbs who had played for England before is not even seen as a backup then he has a big problem.

Jame5

Can we just bid £70 mill for Griezman and get this striker business sorted. He can play in multiple positions, works his socks off in a Athletico team and clearly likes playing now with Giroud.

adriano

What would bidding on a player whose club won’t sell him do for you?
I’d rather we didn’t waste time trying to buy players that are literally off the market.
This is real life, remember.

Eyob

It all depends on Debuchy’s period really.

Rossi88

Debuchy can fuck off. Is it me or are we leaving things late…again

NW Gooner

The transfer window has been open for seven days?

Rossi88

Season starts in like 4weeks?? Earlier the better

Third Plebeian

Yes, the transfer window has only been open a week, but obviously transfer business has been conducted for almost two months now, with just over a month left to go. The lack of any credible links is worrying. We’ll see if things pick up once the Euros are over, but that hasn’t seemed to stop other clubs from getting business done.

Fletcher

Draxler rumours circulating today are more credible than this story.

Arsepedant

Draxler would be a dream signing.

Alexstratz

No he wouldn’t. We are just desperate for any decent signing in attack.

Eternal Titi Berg Pat Nostalgia

A striker and Wenger changing his system to play Giroud and that new striker. Henry suggested this and he was right. Giroud and another striker can be devastating.

Sancheezy

I just don’t understand why Wenger won’t play with two up front. If Ozil had the scoring ability of Cesc, there would be more goals in the team. Giroud, for all the slack he gets, creates space for other players to run in behind him to score just like Griezemann has demonstrated today! The system sometimes needs to change in certain games to make Arsenal a bit more less predictable. Back to the subject, this full back is decent and versatile. Still would prefer Rodriguez over this guy though! Rodriguez would bring something different with his passing and set piece… Read more »

Mootilated

A front line of Draxler, Sanchez and Giroud with Ozil behind them doesn’t sound appealing to you? Would be a great front 4.

gooner4life

Regarding a big name centre forward,as much as I’d love us to sign one I don’t think we will, putting my Wenger head on and if you take into account Welbeck will only miss most of the season and not the rest of his career is why I think we will either get a centre forward in on loan or buy young which we already have with the Japanese boy . If we do spend 30 to 60 million what do we door with Welbeck when his up and running ??? It makes more sense to get someone in on… Read more »

Sancheezy

Like who? Falcao on loan? HaHa that might work with all the service he’d get! Again, he’s a player that plays well with another up front!

rossi88

What do we do when Welbeck returns….hmm…..how about having some depth in the striking department. Just a thought

gooner4life

Depth up front ???

So how many attacking players have we got ???
I make it at least 6 , but I take your point as only having the 2 target men ( Giroud and Sa one goal )

rossi88

I did say striking department in my defence. We have alot of underperforming wide player’s. Walcott, oxlade, Campbell, they don’t produce enough goals and assists. So yeah we could improve in that department. But I only count Giroud and Welbeck at a push as strikers. So you could add at least one striker. One wide man. One centre back. In my head there’s loads to do. Don’t have a clue what Wenger will do. Here’s hoping…

Mr Gooner

If he is versatile as the article describes, then it’s possible but I think Chambers fit that role too, so it’s an interesting one

Fabulous

Jonas Hector anyone? Fair enough I only ever heard of him during the Euros but he looks very steady defensively and not too shabby going forward. And he still plays for Köln if I’m not wrong. No disrespect but he should be aiming higher.

Fredu

He played on the left beacuse it was needed but he really is a player who plays on the right and we don’t really have a backup to bellerin.

steve

Perhaps offer them debuchy in part of a deal

Red Cannon

Don’t forget Jenkinson. The lad should hopefully have a better coming season than his last one.

Indian Gooner

It’s actually getting a bit boring for me without much transfer activities.
Euros has been mediocre, except for Germany’s last two games including Today’s.
Sign some players Arsenal and please start the season already.

Trez

Nope, this signing doesn’t make sense. Why would we waste 14m on a back up rb when we could add a couple of millions and get a WC CB?? This is only happening if Chambers is staying. Chambers needs a run of games, he has to go on loan. We need an experienced cb. I would be very pissed off with move.

Rogerbij

He mostly played left back, not rb last season. Whoscored lists excellent stats, i dont know much about the player. Seems versatile and quality… But yeah 7 poos unlikely at this stage

bystander

Who is this “world class CB” we could get for a couple million more than 14m?

Trez

Manolas would be available for 25m. Koulibaly too if we didn’t wait for chelsea to bid 30m.

Vincent Kompany's Forehead/Jamie Vardinho

What makes you think we didn’t or won’t? Koulibaly is quoted as wanting to play specifically for Conte

Henry's Counter Attack Goal

Seem to be a lot of poo. Make sure you flush

Matt

We should give a lot of poo to Wenger’s signing policy if in around 4-5 weeks we don’t have a top central striker and a top CB.
Draxler’s rumour would be fine as long as we get rid of Walcott.

Ausnew

I can already see the excuses coming as a result of not signing anyone else of world class quality before the transfer window shuts:

1. There was no one available
2. None of the players returned our calls
3. The agents did not return our calls
4. We needed the cash to pay our shareholders dividends
5. The ATM was closed when we tried to make a withdrawl
6. The taxi driver got lost on the way to the Emitates stadium
7…

ac

I’ve never heard of this Swoop guy.

YoungGooner

Djibril cisse!!!?? Finally! Hopefully we can land El Hadji Diouf as well And have a front line composed solely of bleach haired strikers! Coyg!

sambo

Bring in Griezmann for 70 million euros for the right wing with sanchez on the left. Bring me any striker of the top 5-10 there are out there. Lukas, augmen, Higain, lukakku, the italian dude lol, etc etc. And bring in Erik Pieters from Stoke his stats were top/near the top of the league in 3 strong areas like most tackles, 3rd on interceptions, (which kos led), most duels in 244. Cant hurt Stoke is a solid defensive unit at the back. Speaks English, he’s 27. Boom! the league is ours lol

Anup

Unrelated but the Draxler rumours seem to have something about them…I would’ve thought we’d be going for Griezmann but he would be oh so overpriced no?
Draxler seems like a better option, I assume he would be cheaper, in both wages and transfer fee, and I also assume Wenger would then be inclined to let one of Campbell/Walcott go?

Maybe?
Please?

rossi88

But….but Arsene, Griezmann is top, top quality! And you did say : )

He's got no hair but we don't care...

We all know maureen is a gigantic Portuguese tool and manure are northern scum but it’s funny how they do the basics of identifying the positions they need and then go buy the players. We buy a young midfielder (albeit a very good one), any area of the pitch we have plenty of players (yes I know he’s a little more DM) but there’s no sign of the CB & striker (apart from that stunning Japanese signing of course!) we’re desperate for. Oh and there’s zero chance of us signing a Pogba (or the striking equivalent) for £100M that will… Read more »

GoonerInk

why so much hate on campbell? performed everytime he played for us i remember…

Paul

I am sooooooo bored of these left back “links”…

Anonymarse

Well this one turned out to be bollocks didn’t it

Arsenalfanman

Why during the transfer window do clubs always “swoop” like some sort of bird of prey? I’d quite like us to swan dive for a signing.
