Wenger not worried about Alexis and Ozil contracts

Arsene Wenger has admitted there’s been no progress regarding contract extensions for Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, but has said there’s no need for fans to be concerned at this stage.

Both players have two years left on their current deals, but with talks opened months ago, neither seem any closer to putting pen to paper.

It’s not something that has unduly concerned the Arsenal manager, suggesting that the club’s priorities lie in recruitment right now, rather than renewals.

Asked about the talks, he said at today’s press conference, “We keep that internally, we make progress always, but it’s not always a quick progress,” he said.

“They still have two years contract. There’s no urgency, or no reason for Arsenal fans to be concerned.

“At the moment we have priorities that are a bit different. Most of the time contract extensions are done outside the transfer window as it gives you more time concentrate on that.”

Yeah coz we are killing it at the recruitment front, aren’t we?

Fletcher

Patience …patience they are all coming. At the we Liverpool game, let’s kill that first.

Bosscielny

“We are not in the market for any position other than cb”.

Not even the usual “We are looking and if the right player comes up, we’ll do something about it”.

I am trying to be patient till the end of the window but it’s getting harder with their attitude.

Anonymarse

Said this according to arsenal.com

on which other areas he’s looking at other than defence…
There’s no other specific area that we need. It will depend on the quality we find. If we find somebody who strengthens our team in any position, who gives us a superior quality, we’ll do it.

Anonymarse

Probably means no

Bobby P

I don’t understand what he means by “find”. are they hoping to find someone they don’t already know about?

Anonymarse

I guess he means he will only sign somebody better than what we already have. Isn’t that easy to be fair, assuming some of the stories about players not being for sale are to be believed.

Wizardry

Tow years. And how many years is that in SI units?

Crash Fistfight

The SI unit for time is a second, so that would be 63158400s by my calculation (NB 2016 is a leap year).

DontForget

You’re off by one second, 2016 is actually going to be 1 second longer than a standard leap year. http://www.wthr.com/article/scientists-add-extra-leap-second-to-2016

Alex

Anyway Mesut and Sanchez won’t stay in Arsenal their whole lives long. It’s not a prison, so why worrying… Yes, they’ll leave one day, end of the discussion.

A Gorilla

is that Yoda for “I am fucking well”?

Anonymarse

Or am i fucking well

ScotchEggsRules

He’s concentrating on recruitment? Could have fooled me.

Players come and players go. Is it Sunday already?

Iyodo

am a fan and am worried………

voldermort

Both are at an age where they are reaching their peak, they could go anywhere and get the same if not better deals, if the club doesn’t show that our ambitions can match thiers then i wouldn’t blame either of them for leaving. We have been at least two payers short from truly being able to compete for years now, its getting boring. no arsenal fan i know thinks we can or should be able to compete in the market with city or chelsea or even man u for that matter but what we should be doing is using the… Read more »

Cliff Bastin

Well they don’t know who will be the manager next season right?

Crash Fistfight

Maybe it’s because it might be the existing one.

Rob67

They doubt we will win anything this season – is the real reason.

Rage

A ball hasn’t even been kicked and window is still open. Have some faith.

Fletcher

I don’t buy the argument that the duo are stalling to see the outcome of the season, they are part of the squad, they are the ones who make the season.

rohit

let’s be pragmatic. All of us bemoan when our employer doesn’t give us our variable pays because others didn’t do well. Players of high quality expect players of high quality around them. It’s the same Ozil and Alexis who won titles with Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Gio

Yeah he is concentrating on recruitments. Vardy, Higauin,etc..
Actually you may get Bony, thats if he doesnt move to everton.
Come on you Liverpool!

Gio

Sorry, forgot about Alexandre Lacazette, Mauro Icardi and Karim Benzema too.

Le Jim

Higuain? Götze? Pretty sure Liverpool fans were creaming over them a while back.

And we might’ve missed out on all those signings, but at least we didn’t spend 30million on Sadio Mane 😉

Gio

You just spent £35m on Xhaka, so whats your point?
By the way, I’m not a liverpool fan, i just want them to win this weekend, oh against you lot.

Crash Fistfight

So you’re a different kind of twat, then?

Gio

Im sure he will be as successful as your previous swiss players, Djourou and Senderos. Oh, wait a minute… they werent actually any good.

Goldencannon

How desperate are you?
Find something productive to do with your life. Get a hobby

RosickyUBeauty

Mane looks like a good signing even for 30mil

Naija Gunner

Wenger venger enger…… Will this man ever change?

Swish

Well, his name won’t.

Newxieland

I think a lot will come down to our performances this season. Those two can walk into any team in Europe. If we make a sustained challenge in either the Premier League or the Champions League or better yet actually manage to win one of those trophies than I’m sure contract extensions won’t be a problem. If however we do what we usually do – play well for two thirds of a season and go through a horror run over Xmas then yeah you can’t really begrudge them from seeking greener pastures. I hope it’s not the latter as we’ll… Read more »

Matt

As much as I hate to admit this, but if we end up 3rd or 4th in the league, both Sanchez and Ozil will give it a good think wether to stay with us or go somewhere else.

Let’s not forget those two won a lot with Barcelona and Real, they’re not gonna be fine with another mediocre run (yes, mediocre because a team like Arsenal must fight for the league, 10 points behind Leicester doesn’t cut it). And Wenger is relying one more season on Walcott…….

Little Mozart

I’m expecting contracts to be signed by our star duo either in November or February.

Sideshow_bob

Le Prof has dropped a bombshell ahead of this weekends game against Liverpool. Let me just give you his quote: “I don’t count in numbers as the squad is too big. “I am looking at no other areas apart from centre back, it’s about quality.” So it looks like Mustafi is going to be our only other signing, and that was only forced upon him by the injury to Per Mertesacker! So how is that transfer progressing? Wenger was asked about that too, and he simply replied: “I cannot tell you.” OMG did he really say this at today’s press… Read more »

Daz

I think top players (Ozil, Sanchez)sign because they buy into the managers vision (only homegrown players like Jack buy in to club prestige) and when the manager doesn’t uphold his vision (spend money on other top players) that’s when they consider leaving. If they don’t sign extension it’s Wenger and the boards fault.

catbiscuits

top players routinely choose Real Madrid, despite the managerial merry go round

so I’m not sure manager’s vision is really the dominant factor

Daz

Real Madrid pick up a trophy of some sort every bloody season thats the attraction there, but with Arsenal because of our lack of trophies over the past 12 yrs we need a personal touch, there were stories that Wenger went out personally to meet Ozil and Sanchez, have you heard that recently about any other potential top players that we have been linked with? Just asking.

Mpls

You never hear about it until after. Our deals are done quietly.

Maniac

Just give them both contracts for £200k a week or something else similarly stupid but standard in the current footballing world. If we’re not gonna spend any money signing anyone we might as well make sure that we keep who we’ve got.

PodB

Okay … then what? Bit like Arsene’s transfer plans. He must win the league to keep his job. Were not winning the Champions League without a new striker. Just do it.

The Great Ex-Priest Tobin

Ozil is overrated and personally I wouldn’t be too crushed if he leaves in a year’s time. We should sign Rogic who was linked this window, he would be a good replacement in a year or two. We must tie down Alexis though, he is the heart and soul of this club.

Yagaru

I can’t express jut how angry I am. Where’s the striker we were promised?! You can’t believe a word Wenger says.

Ani

Considering that Wenger is leaving at the end of the season, and they are definitely going to play this season, i would say its more Ivan’s concern that he keeps his main players after this season 🙂
