Gibbs gets England call up

Kieran Gibbs has been called into the England squad for the World Cup qualifier against Slovenia on Tuesday.

The Arsenal left-back is a replacement for Ryan Betrand, son of Belgian pop sensation Plastic, who got injured in the 2-0 win over Malta last night.

The 27 year old has found his playing time quite limited with Nacho Monreal the number one choice at left-back, but has made a number of substitute appearances this season, as well as one start in the EFL Cup (see appearance stats here).

Gibbs has won 10 caps for England in his time, and his last appearance came in November 2015 when he started against France at Wembley.

He’s probably going to just be a sub with Danny Rose likely to start, but you never know. Good luck to him.

Wow gibbs is 27, i always saw him as the 22 years old left back who has talent to become great left back but it didn’t happend.

Paul

I like Gibbs.

Polish Gunner

Danny Rose is shit.

It Is What It Is

So is his team

Andy Mack

I though roses were supposed to do well in shit… 😀

Arsene

I also like Gibbs.

Denzil

Crazy to think Gibbs is now 27. Surely he needs to move on and we get a younger replacement. There was a brief period when I thought he would be our number one LB for some years to come. I just don’t think there’s enough about him going forward or defensively to ever be considered Arsenal quality number 1. A shame really seems like a nice lad, but he’s also injured way too much and should have developed a lot better than he has done.

Sg_gooner

A good squad player. He really been impeded by injuries.

It Is What It Is

An international squad player though…squad depth. Enough crucial goal line clearances, just was/is injury prone…happy for him to compete with first choice, knowing that is the worst we could do at LB until we develop another.

David C

Agreed! I actually think he could play the left wing for England and do better than what they have. His first touch is sublime. A fantastic squad player; you hold on to these guys until they complain to leave and Gibbers hasn’t done that yet (at least not in public).

gunnertron

Something to worry about in the summer, perhaps?

LuisBoaMuerte

Yeah, selling Gibbs to upgrade LB this summer would have left us too much to do. Left back is satisfactory at worst for the time being, although I was quite excited by the Ricardo Rodriguez rumours during the Euros I have to say.

One thing I’ve noticed since Monreal and Bellerin have had the starting spots on lock down is how much our team performance, offensive and defensively, drop off when we play our backup full backs.

TOGooner

BoaMorte – that may be true for our back-up RBs, as there is an ever increasing gulf in quality with Bellerin’s epic progress, but our LBs are both quality. Also, Gibbs and Nacho play together often during late game stages, a trend I see continuing throughout this season. I would really put LB as one of our healthiest positions.

WengaBoys

Psh, I still remember that volley he scored!

Pinkie

Hey Denzil, leave our Gibbs alone!

OOzil

hope gibbo gets some playing time. danny rose is slightly better than a moderately agile jelly fish.

Naija Gunner

The thought of the name is shit(R****) yuck

Anthony

Still think he is a very good Left Back, I rate him highly. Would like us to do well in the domestic cups, purely to give him game time.

Still, it’s good to be in a position where our back-up options are as good as/quite close to the first option. For me, Gibbs is as good as Nacho, and certainly doesn’t look out of place when playing for us.

Evang. Femi

Grab your chance Gubbo….. The quality is glaring. Shame injuries never allowed you to maximise your potential. Better than Debuchy though in character.

Moscool

I’ve been surprised by his technical quality in all his appearances this season. Maybe he always had them; or maybe I just forgot…

Gunman

So that’s Theo, Chambo, and Gibbo all on international duty. Shits gonna get very confusing for Southgate.

Cliff Bastin

Omg stop calling up all our fullbacks.

Pacific Gooner

Monreal and Gibbs out for 3 months 🙂

MeSoHornsey

Apart from Gary Cahill, Danny Rose is the most overrated player in the squad.

SizC

Erm …… Rooney???

Bobby P

Rooney at least used to be good, Danny rose has always been as useful as a chocolate flame thrower. It really amazes me that anyone could play football as often as Danny rose and still have such an awful first touch.

Bennacer and the Jets

A chocolate flame thrower sounds either delicious or gross, i can’t decide

ub

Ricardo Rodriguez looked like it had some substance in the summer but knowing Wenger, (if he stays beyond his contract) and if Gibbs leaves, we’ll probably get some left-back we’ve never heard of.

A Different George

I was happy when he got a number 10 we never heard of from Madrid, and a decent unknown forward from Barca.

Why not

I much prefer it when buys well known, flavour of the month, central defenders from ligue deux.

Kevlarbe

It seems selfish to keep such a good player, but that’s what you need to win titles. A squad, with players who can fit in seamlessly.

Arky

I genuinely had to Google to check if the Plastic Bertrand thing was true. Dearie me.

Andres

Was it?

Winterburn 87

Good luck to Southgate,he knew more winner’s and classy characters needed for the England team

ChrisGoona

He got to watch him closely for the U21’s so he is fully aware that he is a better LB than Rose. Just needs games.

Johnny B.

Good for Kieran! Despite bad luck involvement in some unfortunate goals we conceded, he’s good player, just needs games.

David C

Unrelated, but Cech out this beauty:

I know what Bloggs wants for Christmas now, haha. Might be good to get James one because it might protect him during the winter 🙂

santori

He looked good coming on for us last. We will want him to do well where he can and eventually take over from Monreal who isn’t young. Gibbs can bridge 2-3 seasons but we will then have to in coming windows be on the look out for someone who can eventually come through at Lback. Nothing in academy thus far suggest there is a talent coming through so may have to be ready made or close to from market Where Rback we have competition from Jenkinson and Calum to Bellerin, Lback is a bit of an issue past Monreal and… Read more »

Maasai Gooner

I have always liked this guy I think he’s just good to a back up player. I wish he will get more playing in the future, preferably at Arsenal.
Or is it we happen to share a birthday ?
