Iwobi: I’m claiming the first goal

Although Arsenal’s second and third goals during the 4-0 win over Swansea yesterday were officially marked as own goals, Alex Iwobi says he’s going to fight for the first one as it came from a shot on target.

There’s no doubt the second one, deflected into his own net by former Sp*rs player Kyle Naughton, was an OG, but the Nigerian international wants to add to his tally with the first.

“”I’m claiming the first one!,” he told the official site.

“It’s on target so I’m going to claim that one. Second one I can let slide, but the first one is definitely my goal.”

And after another fairly pedestrian first half, Iwobi says that Arsene Wenger told the team to up the intensity in the second period, and it was at the end of a period of sustained pressure that Iwobi’s first own goal (!) came about.

“The boss got onto us a bit saying we know we can do better, just keep on moving the ball quickly, as fast as we can,” he said.

“In the second half we showed our quality and were able to get the three points.”

Sheffield Goon

Good lad. You deserve it.

David C

In ice hockey, we don’t have own goals. Whichever player touched the puck last for the attacking team gets the goal. Does Iwobi get anything for creating 2 own goals? Do you get an assist in that situation?

At least Owen Goal is playing for us again!

Anyone watching the Everton game? Can’t tell if Citeh are playing so poor or Everton are playing really good, like they did against us. I’d love Lukaku on our team whenever Giroud is finished.

BringBackSeaman

Assists are not recorded by the FA..

Clubs, stat companies and fans keep track of that, though they have no obligation to do so.

So to answer your question, if Arsenal want to give him two assists for the OG, but Sky don’t… no body would care.

It just comes down to where you get your stats from.

Arsene McLovin

Serious question. Who decides such cases? Are appeals applicable?

Dubious goals panel can look at those and retrospectively give goal to Iwobi.

Arsene's zip

Dubious Goals committee. If the ball is heading towards the net before the deflection, the attacker should be awarded the goal.

Thanks for the link

That would be a sweet gig. If only the committee could go back and review Lampard’s goals.

Amusa

There is a dubious goal panel.
The cunts took away one of Henry’s goals on his comeback I remember.

229, never forget.

John

Why do the players need to be told to get their arse into gear?

Dwayne

That’s exactly what I was thinking, John. Why does Wenger have to get on them about upping intensity? Shouldn’t he tell them this before the game starts not at halftime? Is this why we looked pedestrian at the start of Bournemouth game amongst others?

Dan Hunter

Why not start the game pretending it’s the second half?

hs

Because the mental aspect is a much bigger part of the game than most people realise.

Canador

He could as well pop them up from the touchline when he sees they are slow. Why must he wait till half time to change things?

Dial Square

I am a little bit disappointed when he scores scruffy goals. He is such an elegant player, I expect all of his goals to be works of art.
I am sure I wont be disappointed for long, he is going to score lots of goals that are going to make us drool

onenil

The way Swansea defended inside their own 6 yard box he had exactly the right approach – get in a great position then smash the ball in as a cross/shot and there was every chance of an unsaveable ‘lucky’ deflected goal. Love his hard work and attitude. Deserves the MoM. I am not disappointed when he wins us matches!

santori

You make your own luck.

What is important is we upped our output of shots at goal.

As Ruud Gullit said some time back :”If you don’t shoot, you don’t score”

We are still over-complicating things at time and taken an extra unnecessary half touch in front of goal.

assistantref

I agree, half touches are always unnecessary, and often downright counterproductive.

Crash Fistfight

And also against the laws of physics.

Possession

Pretty sure Giroud scored the first goal Alex…. 😉
Seriously though, his shot for our second was definitely on target before being deflected so he should get credited with it……he was the best player on the park so certainly deserved it !!

tunny

Who cares now? C’mon guyz a goal is a goal period.as long as we cut off the points difference btw us and boring Chelsea
